The difference is mass, not density. A short swing w/ mjolnir causes a slight push back. The length & swing thor got w/ that over grown maul let him get more momentum & therefore threw the hulk farther. The hulk has long since not been affected by mjolnirs affects unless thor lets go when its ontop of him.
