DevUpdate 2.14: Godot: instance variables to main code through signals figured out.

In Godot instances are in their own little world. Can't pass info into them, can't take info out. I knew there was a way to do it with Signals but was too stupid to figure it out. Till now! Previously I was using a Global Vars singleton nightmare to pass variables. With Signals, pack the variables needed into the emit and the connect transfers them.

After resolving all the Orphan Nodes I re-installed the random number generator to see if it still creates Orphans and it does. Still near blind and new pedals as of today this virgin Rookie gets moved up to Class D. The T-LCM pedals made such a difference I started using my right leg for accel and brake, as I do in RL instead of left leg for brake which is clutch only when I had a manual transmission. #iracing #simracing

Move your mouse around a screen and have a path follow it. Player is start of path, mouse pointer is ever moving end of path. How *I* made it work in Godot 4.1.1 and the thought process it took to come to fruition. Here I'm using a modified Astar2dGrid with defined "solids" movement code but the concepts will work for any pathfinding movement system and language. Probably. Music: rain in summer...

Finally figured out how to make a NPC sprite know what tile they are on and what the next tile in their path is, and make a decision on what to do based on the next tile. I'm done with movement videos as this is exactly what I've been trying to create since this whole project began. Now to figure out how to create save games with this current mess..

    The cargo merge bug briefly mentioned can be fixed: if the cargo says 0 after the merge, click like the signals button then cargo again and it'll show up. Just watched a Hawkes Gaming '20 tips' thing from a year ago and that's where this fix comes from. Again A YEAR AGO and the bug still ain't fixed.

    Welp, I've started making car objects and realized I'm entering simpleton-simulation like territory. The car consists of all its parts: engine, suspension, axles, differential type, all vehicles can have multiple different types/sizes/ratings/wear of tires at once (bad to do that but sometimes it is what it is) and so much more. All parts naturally have their own personal max 'hit points' and required maintenance. Pity the poor tires which in SSI's RoadWar 2000 they just blew and were replaced. Not here. One should do that but nope, not here.. This all impacts loot finding, figuring if a recruit could be a natural-born Mechanic god (probably not, once a Jeff always a Jeff) and finds a point for Garages on the map other then loot spots. The vehicles stability and torque and misconfiguration can destroy the vehicle. Shove a jacked to heck tuned by Jeff v8 without compensating all the other parts then flooring the gas for fun which a psychotic individual may think is a good idea because it might be a happy Tuesday for a change, could twist the driveline, shatter the diff spider gears (still figuring out ratios there), tear apart pieces or all the suspension due to the surge, stall the engine due to lack of airflow or spin out the vehicle/possibly flip it if the driver has Jeffs driving skill of 0, and so on. Nothing on the graphic front yet. Thinking about switching to 3-d eventually. I want cars to jump and flip throwing their passengers with guns everywhere (seatbelts! physics! will never happen!) and F the suspension to hell ( had a possible heart attack 3 weeks ago and possible minor stroke this morning! beer-thirty is here!) While programming these objects came up with drag-racing during encounter situations. Drag racing to make a name for the gang, drag practice during camp (not sneaky camp there), drag racing as a map-wide universal "F-yea!" and only the highest caliper drivers could hope to eek out everything of a created by wallflower Jeff stacked raring to go beast machine. Also every car/weapon has its 'will never be programmed intricacies'. Cold use of all will underperform. But the longer the person uses them specifically, even a v6 on 'old factory everything parts' could perform minor miracles. For weapons, the more one person uses that particular weapon the better that weapon could perform. The reason for this change is Wargasm 40K: Rouge Trader. Jae was awesome in her initial mission and not so as part of my retune. So I wanna fix that in my game. Crap need to finish work on the 'people have memories' thing and a save mechanic..

    Another solution to get rid of the focus box (first minute of the video) is to go in Control -> Theme overrides -> styles -> focus and fill that with style box empty

      Went back to this video since I'm attempting list boxes again for debugging and tried your solution. It still highlights the box while mouse ignore doesn't realize it's there so no highlight. Godot 2.2 stable. Your solution may still be useful as I trudge on through this, thanks for the tip.

      You're welcome. Long after this I did an experiment. Put 5000 people dictionaries in an array and the IDE couldn't show any persons stats passed around 150. Changed the dictionary to object, broke into the running code and can check all 5000 peoples stats. For numbers like this I'm using Objects now.

    my huge gripe right now is that there's no documentation or videos anywhere on how to use the random selector node (or any of the other more complex nodes besides the standard sequence, condition leaf, and action leaf). I want to have it randomly choose between two different animations but every different way I try to implement it it just jumps between the two animations every frame, and ignores my code that should have it not exit that branch until the animation is complete. Obviously I don't know how the branch works but there absolutely nothing to indicate how to use it. Not even a tooltip in the engine. This video was 9 months ago and the documentation is still abysmal.

      I agree. And the author hasn't released an updated video like he said he was going to do. I also haven't dug further into behavior trees and for now coding for the situation and developing my own simple state trees. For example: Two cars of towns we'll say haven't had contact before. The situation is does the driver floor the car and attempt to ram/attack the other car: match car11.driver.allure: "annoying": #do this code which uses their current mood "psychotic":#do this code which is a 50/50 roll. ..and so on to achieve an end result for the driver. That result is then fed to the passenger which goes through a similar thing to determine their reaction to said result. In the end will an attack happen to start a fight on their side. The same thing then happens with the other car. If escalation happens that's more manual code. I don't see how this could be a behavior tree. This video is only how to start a Beehave tree, if one wants to explore further it's trial and error and more research unfortunately. I will edit this to say I have no idea if I'll have open town exploration in my game. If so, I'll need something like Beehave for the townspeople. So..figure it out if need then and probably be in the same boat as you.

    Just putting this out there. Learning all this reminds me of pre-internet days. In Portland, Or. I'd take a bus or lightrail downtown to Powells Books and try to find another $50 1,000+ page book on Turbo Pascal that had at least a section that the other two $50 1,000+ page books by totally different authors didn't have. Usually hours later I'd head home empty handed. All the books had all the same information. On 1 trip I found something no other book had, a Bubble-Sort algorithm. I was $50 poorer but gained new information. All the videos/posts now are like that time only paperless. The point of my videos is to be that coveted Bubble-Sort algorithm.

    There's a problem with the code. What if there are multiple collisions at the exact same time? Dunno but computers are beyond fast. The information to create the convoys is passing through multiple variables in the GlobalVar singleton but that's procedural so no problem. The plan is to instance out the variables immediately to their own code space to resolve themselves there then pass results back to the spawner if anyone survives. It gets more complicated.. if only 1 person survives but both vehicles are destroyed, they have to walk which will become another instance put back on the main map available to other "collisions". That's alot of programming for just one encounter. More importantly all that happens behind the scenes. This game is about the world living, not the player. Almost through Balders Gate 3 and it annoys me that an enemy at 100% health is just as strong as 1%. That a character says, "meet me in 2 days time here" and 15 rests, 12 quests later you head there and gosh darn it you're "just in time". BG3 and so many other games the player is the hero. In this game the player is dirt. The player/gang dies the world moves on, will anyone care? Depends.

    How difficult was it to get started with Utility AI compared to Beehave?

      The video was straight from the add-on docs and typed out examples. Beehave was a nightmare to even begin understanding how to start. Anything I finally figured out with Beehave was forgotten by the time I noticed Utility AI and picked up just enough for this video and there's tons more left. Unlike Beehave in a couple hours I was able to do the test of 5 objects versus 40k for example. Proper docs are everything and Utility is almost all there while Beehave (as of now) still ain't. I'm a total moran when it comes to Object Programming. An idiot. A 53 year old mental infant whose brain sees Object Programming and turns off saying, "yucky". And even my dumbass figured out enough from the documentation to make this video. That's a huge recommendation for Utility AI. EDIT: In practice I'm not using any add-on for AI yet. Doing it manually, badly.

    As I understand it Godot only tracks and cleans up "References". Objects, anything that can be considered a "Node" have to be freed manually. Hence why the "HeadItem" changed from extends Node to extends Reference stomped the remaining Orphans. Finding this information out was futile while Godot docs will say "It's right here in the docs." Which it is. If one can find the very specific area where it's mentioned. Those free and paid courses in Godot? Will they cover what's in this video? I'm an idiot and Godot is NOT idiot friendly. However, GDScript and Godot are awesome. Like that partner you love and will follow to the ends of the earth yet at the same time absolutely hate they exist. Final edit: In addons/betterrandnumbergen/calc_random.gd is an object that extends Node. I changed it to extend RefCounted and no more ophan nodes! Can change all the random code gen back. From Godot Docs: RefCounted:"Base class for any object that keeps a reference count. Resource and many other helper objects inherit this class. Unlike other Object types, RefCounteds keep an internal reference counter so that they are automatically released when no longer in use, and only then. RefCounteds therefore do not need to be freed manually with Object.free()."

      If you mean make say a 'teddy bear' and have it auto-posted to a souvenir shop- no I haven't figured out how to do that as it would take 96% of the tedium out of the game. Any hints how to do it?

      @kindavacant7843 you can make them auto post the bears turning on the auto button at top of the menu. Then you put in the parameters using the 2 new categories. Something like quantity and Something else with numbers to the right. One of the numbers is a number that triggers the next if the posted teddy bears goes below that number. And the other number is how many more teddy bears gets posted. So if both numbers are 10, when posted teddy bears goes to 9, it will post 10 more and bring it to 19. But you have to auto create them at the produce building also. Or just create a million of them and ignore the setup for a long time until you run out

    All featured races in full plus a bonus Tsukuba race will be posted as unlisted videos in the description tomorrow (5/17). No upcoming video for Tsukuba. While I know the track inside and out now, the default T150 pedals have zero resistance and the brake seems it's either off or full on and can't get below 1.62 consistently (yanked out a 1.59 once somehow). Just ordered Thrustmaster T-LCM pedals and after not wearing glasses for 2 years with a prescription of left Sphere -1.00 and right Sphere -7.25 it will take at least a week for the double vision hell to go away as the brain and eyes readjust.

    2:00 So, I was taking a look at the tilemap node just as you did, apparently godot pushes the tiles you painted on a list/queue, if you were to pain the tiles of the first line from left to right and the second line from right to left, you'd get this output of 'get_used_cells(0)': [(0, 0), (1, 0), (2, 0), (2, 1), (1, 1), (0, 1)] Which is simillar to the output you got... now if I paint the tiles in a order always left to right, I'd get this: [(0, 0), (1, 0), (2, 0), (0, 1), (1, 1), (2, 1)] And this also happens if I paint by collums: [(0, 0), (0, 1), (1, 0), (1, 1), (2, 0), (2, 1)] I don't think this is the best way to make a tilemap tho, as I think a list might be sometimes slower than a matrix.... Edit: also, nice video mate.

    So the future of this concept? When fuel is implemented the path will only go as far as there is fuel. Since bad roads can damage vehicles a button to turn on/off 'avoid soft obstacles during pathfinding (the Astar grid can be populated/depopulated with solids at any time without refreshing the grid), and so on and some such.. Since this is a bare basic system right now it picks valid points behind the two info planes so working on how to stop that behavior. Maybe some box on layer -10 or so to use as a bounding box or 4 rectangles to define each side.. Godot can be weird about these things.

      I'm convinced the Algorithm knew nothing about this video until a viewer saw it had over 1K views so watched it while being high as hell, drunk off their ass, dumber then a bag of hammers or a combination of the three and thought it was real crime and reported it because...umm...I'm lost at this one...something along the lines of "the internet gives all of us a voice, even us that eat every meal with two plastic spoons so I'm going to squeak up with my phalanges and that will show mom I know Ohms Law!" The Algorithm then had to stand up from its cozy chair where it was eternally convincing bit that it isn't inferior since there can be no byte without many bits, sighing as bit is such a whiney bitch and simply did as its human masters programmed it to do- human masters that don't understand the concept of random therefore can't program anything to be random. Human masters who have to program code where there can exist only black/white and no grey because are you kidding me? The amount of storage and database that shit would take up? And they're directed by their human masters who are directed by approval algorithms based on is coffee good or bad for humans health this year? And their masters ladder extends to shareholders that only care about money and which view shift needs to be made this month to make more of it. The video was up for a year and passed initial algorithm reviews. No other video was flagged, only that one.     Haha I love it. I felt the same way getting started with behavior trees. The concepts are heavily abstracted: composite, leaf, selector, sequencer, etc. It's quite simple once I've understood it.

    I am making a tile base rpg game using listview in java. When I move the player, it looks like it is teleporting from one tile to another. It is not smooth movement. How can I do it? By the way love your videos❤❤

      Yea. Pretty sure it was reported by someone who also didn't know it was a game and the algorithm took it from there which is why I pointed out I nowhere said it was a game in the description and that the game isn't in RUclipss database, things the algorithm I'm pretty sure uses. And I'm a tiny channel with no way to talk to a human at RUclips. Just see this as a way to abuse a system.

    are you still playing grey hack would be awesome if you could do a more in depth guide for complete noobs awesome video so far it explains just enough to figure it out hopefully the switches and hubs work the same as the router lol ive been stuck for a few days trying to finish a mission because I do not know how to navigate around the subnets to get to the location of my target pc

      @@kindavacant7843 that sucks man I like how you were using base games scripts and strats to achieve the missions plus you were showing people how to move through the systems in a sense most people that make videos it seems to target advanced people because they use mods or custom scripts that new people don't know about or know how to use than barely talk about it the subject and do not show us how to do things from the base game so leaves us stuck trying to figure it out with and there is nothing written about how the subnets even work or how you can navigate through the network to reach your target with scan lan.exe thanks for at least making this video its a good helpful start in the right direction

    Okies, the Astar2DGrid/tween movement got rewritten hopefully for the final time. Threw out the Timer(not sure why it was there), no more 'tween.play()' which was not needed as turns out that's used to resume from a tween.pause(). Managed to tween a single tile at a time smoothly allowing a npc vehicle to greatly slow down during a hazard and get collisions working. Also drivers 'driving' skill determines the movement speed. Will have a new video up soon after testing is done.

    While the code here is all valid I started adding in pauses for collisions and wanted to slow speed for hazards in prep to change it all to a Beehave Tree and ran into problems. Turns out this: "for id in id_path" is not what I thought. In my old mind 'id' should be an integer stating how far into 'id_path' the loop is. Turns out "id in id_path" is the value of id_path in the loop. So if 'id_path' is: (40,34),(41,39),(42,39).. 'id' in the first loop is (40,34). Not value 1 of the array 'id_path' like I thought. I've been trying to break at a specific point in the path not understanding how 'for' works. Currently trying to cope and fix it to my way of ancient thinking or deal with it.

    Do the computers ever evolve past level 1.0.0 on single player? I've got like 20 ish hours on a play through and all the libraries are still 1.0.0.

      They used to, I’m not sure which update changed it. I spent so long in between playthroughs that the game has some significant update each time. Now they have CTF’s…

      You're welcome. I think 'animation_player' has been a staple in Godot for so long it's what everyone uses. Then those that want to learn that's all they see when looking things up so use it also and so on and so on.
