Great video. Looking forward to it! If you do more videos, suggest not having windows that close. Your commentators faces are in shadows. Understand why you might prefer outdoors in the background but it was a bit distracting for me. Again, great preview! And I think a great site for it (note: I am an Echo Valley member).
Great young man
Wait. There was another channel that said that if any part of the ball is general area then the ball is considered to be in the general area, not in the penalty area. Has this changed?

Thanks so much for posting this tribute Skip. Fantastic story!
"When the ball is out of bounds it's OK for a player to stand out of bounds to play that shot, as long as the ball itself is in bounds" This sounds contradictory, the ball cannot be out of bounds and in bounds at the same time. Can you please clarify this part of the video? Then the section immediately after this in the video says that "if the ball is determined to be out of bounds, the player MUST take stroke-and-distance relief by playing the ball from where the previous stroke was made". So, after the above statements, it's not very clear if the ball can ever be played as it lies out of bounds. Can you please clarify?
The ball can not be O.B. and played in any situation. What she was describing is if the ball is in play but you need to stand O.B. in order make the shot. You are allowed to stand ob but the ball cannot be.
@@jamesroberts7489 "as long as the ball itself is in bounds"... for some reason my brain completely ignored that part of the sentence. After your clarification it makes perfect sense. Thank you!
So if I hit my drive and I’m not sure if my ball entered a penalty area but I have reasonable suspicion that it did… Am I required to take stroke and distances or am I able to simply make a point of reference and drop from there and hit 3?
Also.. I did not really understand your explanation at 18:50. Also at 25:20, I thought dropping outside the bunker is 2 strokes penalty?
Here the Ball in the Bunker has Casual Water interference, which is FREE Relief Inside the Bunker and only 1 Penalty Stroke Outside. When a Player is taking "Unplayable Ball" Relief, then it's 1 Penalty Stroke Inside the Bunker and 2 Penalty Strokes Outside the Bunker.
Question- Played recently and from the drive my ball pulled, ran off the FW and to a general area where the ground was dry, had multiple cracks, crevices and holes (probably due to heavy rains, then dried up). My ball was wedged in one of those holes. Is this covered under Rule 16 and I get free relief?
No
Is FW fairway? If so the fairway is apart of the general.
yes
great work, love the voice too! sorry
I have a question. If my ball is up against what you would call weeds or taller grass on the edge of a hole in the rough. Is it a penalty if I was to step in behind that ball to line up my shot and in doing so I trample down some taller weeds within a couple feet of my ball. In other words step in behind in the line of play and then step back another step to get a line up in my vision to the hole.? Thank you
16:53 falls under another rule and you do get relief as the sprinkler and the ball are within 2 club lengths of the green.
The rules state If the colour of a penalty area has not been marked or indicated by the Committee, it is treated as a red penalty area. If that is the case and the area not marked has no water in it or it is literally the woods and ball is lost do you play a provisional or just drop and take a one stroke penalty? This is always a point where we have confusion on interpreting the rules!
Thanks for the video. Questions - 1) In your example if the player plays a provisional, and that too is lost/OB (uncertain), he then plays a second provisional shot and that one lands in FW. What is his stroke count if he cannot find the first ball or the first provisional? Is he hitting 4 or 6? 2) Is there a limit as to how many provisionals a player can play per hole? 3) Can you also play a provisional from the FW or is it just from the tee box?
Hi there - to answer your questions 1) - Assuming the original stroke was the first stroke from the tee, if he found his first provisional ball he would then be playing his 4th stroke. If he lost both the original ball and the 1st provisional ball, but found the 2nd provisional, then he would be playing his 6th stroke. 2) - No limit to how many provisional balls one can play. Each provisional ball bears the same relationship to the provisional ball played right before it, as the first provisional ball bore to the original ball (that is a long-winded way of saying, it's better to find your 1st provisional ball before your 2nd or 3rd provisional ball). 3) - Yes, you can play a provisional ball from anywhere on the golf course as long as you have reason to believe your original ball could be lost outside of a penalty area or out of bounds
@@chadpitts Ok that's what I thought. Thanks for the detailed explanation! Another question if I may, really dumb question but I just want to be certain as this happened this past weekend. Player shanks his tee shot 60 yards left and lost into the woods. He wanted to go that spot (low grass but not yet to the fairway- FW is another 50 yards up) and drop, claims to be hitting his 3rd. I told him he can, but he would be hitting 4, not 3. (we adopted the local rule to help speed up. we're high 90s-low 100s). I told him the better option is to re-tee, taking advantage of teeing up and using the driver, vs maybe a wood or iron if he went to where the ball was lost. Q1 - can he go to the spot where ball was lost and if so, is he hitting 4? Q2 - With the alternative to Stroke and Distance (local rule), does he have to go to the FW to drop? That would be another 50 yards up, if that were the case. Thank you in advance.
@@Unplugged704 Hi there - with the "alternative to stroke and distance" local rule in effect, the player in your example (who shanked) would be hitting 4 if he dropped under that rule. If he just proceeded under stroke and distance and went back to the tee he would be hitting 3 (just like a lost ball or tee shot that went OB). So the answer to your Q1 is yes, you are correct. The answer to Q2 is no, he does not have to go to the fairway. In fact, he is not allowed to go closer to the hole than where the ball was estimated to be lost. Imagine that a ball is estimated to be lost (or crossed the OB boundary) 230 yards from the hole. Take that point and draw an arc to a point that is also 230 yards from the hole 2 club lengths into the fairway. Everything between those two points and 230 yards or more from the hole is the area where he could drop a ball (with two penalty strokes). So he does not have to go into the fairway. Also, if there is no fairway (such as you describe) unless you get closer to the hole, then that "arc" just travels across the hole and he can drop anywhere in that area (again, 230 yards or more from the hole). I hope that makes sense as this is much easier to explain with a diagram.
@@chadpitts Ok.. you have confirmed my understanding of the rules. Most of the people I play with are just casual golfers but some are in the mid 80s, and not all of them understand the rules. One person shows off his scorecard to be in the mid-high 80s. He sat with me and he shot 102! He may have had a bad day perhaps, but I know I added at least 8 strokes to his round that day! lol. Thanks for taking the time to explain in detail! Subscribed!
@@chadpitts With our local rule you can go to the fairway close to rough not closer to the hole and hit 4. Only way I'd do that is if I smashed a drive and think it may be playable. Im not driving back. A shank 60 yrd shot you'd want to hit 3 from tee box if lost.
nice video
