just flying around.
crater lake with dominic
fellow pilot dominic wanted to go to crater lake, I hadn't flown it yet. we had a great time.
the lake itself is at 6178 feet, the rim surrounding it is 8200ft on the west and over 8900ft on the east. combine that with staying 2000 feet above the surface we were up around 10k feet for the whole flyover. thought about descending to 8500ft over the lake but the air was thin.
enjoy two pilot nerds chatting away.

Beautiful as always!
What year is the GX?
EPIC!! I need to do this next summer!
hit me up. it'd be awesome early in the year, like april.
beautiful day to see the crater
Can I ask what you are doing to collect flight data? This video is showing IAS for speed so are you plugged into your air data system and have some extra flight data log hardware? Also, you forced me to dnf install figlet! Now I need to go track down all my missing ascii cows.
hey! I usually just use the gopro's GPS data, but I show TAS/IAS on some videos using the downloaded data from my Dynon system, then put it through Telemetry Overlay. It's especially useful on landings because it removes any variation with ground speed due to wind. Also decent for high altitude like this. Ascii cows, guessing you're an Ansible user.
@@flysport_tedder I wish it was quick/easy to set up a way to measure control surface positions. (commenting into the void ....)
That is a really pretty place to fly. Very cool.
You should really consider flying IRL instead of always in a sim.. graphics are insane though!
I usually just let the trolls be, but I saw this and I was like "I have to say something". Then I saw who the user was 😂
..and it confirmed your priors
I'm getting SO MUCH better at greenscreen.

Awesome video...
Great video, and good decision to go around 👍
Damn that is gorgeous out there.
What a spot! Magic land out there. Well done man... its nice to be reminded its possible to be too high, which i have never been since flying a hershey bar 😅
I was amazed when flying with you about you being very high and landing perfectly, such a difference between planes! It's why I slip the majority of my landings.
Great video Ted! I’m getting caught up on my backlog of videos. I could see how the “let’s go again” comment after the first lap was kind of like a break-thru moment. Well done! Question, first time I’ve noticed the “refueling probe” poking out of the left wing. What is it really? A little bit rough on the way back but she handled it really well!
Thanks Peter. The “probe” is the pitot tube. Very unique shape, and this plane has a backup so same “probe” on both sides.
@@flysport_tedderI thought that’s what it might be but the shape threw me off
Down hill, into the sun, only do that if there is a strong wind!
Did you move to Troutdale!? Great job with a nervous passenger :-) 🙌🏻
yeah, moved to TTD! only took like 18 months. and thanks :)
Hey it was good meeting you yesterday at Twin Oaks! I just happened to see your plane land and thought "that looks familiar!" Neat little plane, if you ever have a seat open I'd love to do a flight with you and I could help with fuel cost.
hey! nice meeting you. if you go into my 'about' page on youtube you can get my email address. would love to take you up! no need for fuel cost sharing.
It’s always nice to share flying with the people in our lives
This was great. Very relatable. Congrats on the downtown tour and the trip for coffee and all the rest.
Great video as always, one of those rare GA videos where i watch the whole thing instead of scrub through to the takeoffs and landings.
Awesome! I always found explaining what I was doing and also pointing out landmarks makes it so much better for new passengers. Great job doing that for her!
thanks! @briansiskind pointed out I must've been sponsored by the Sandy River. doh.
Love all your videos man! I noticed your taking off with flaps 0 instead of the normal 15 takeoff for a CTLS, is that on purpose? Also, did you remove the stick on the right side ?
hey! love yours too. The POH isn't black or white on the issue, I only use 15 flaps on soft fields. And yeah, I wrote a MRA for the stick removal. It's really handy to remove it for nonpilots with mobility issues. Here's what it looks like: www.ctflier.com/topic/9042-3d-printed-accesories/?do=findComment&comment=108394
@@flysport_tedder I read the POH again, and your correct about taking off with flaps 0, I am going to try it out. Very cool with the stick removal and the 3d printing !
Wonderful vid! That take off smile was legit! And that first landing… wish I could be that smooth. Nicely nicely done 👍👊
Has she ever been on a boat? If so did you explain to her that the bump are exactly the same thing just with air instead of water? I find this analogy quells the bumps being something that scares low time passengers
20:13 ouch. Wonder if he was actively frustrated by someone else. Or maybe he doesn't like light sport airplanes...? 21:25 yikes! brutal winds in the pattern Apart from that this was a really cool flight!
He was probably super overwhelmed by the crash that happened, in his airspace, he was the last person talking to them, and he’s solo in the tower. Mostly I think he remembered giving me a subtly different instruction 8 minutes prior.
@@flysport_tedder Yeah that makes sense.
This was one of my favorite videos of yours. Kirsten did awesome! I love how you kept her apprised of what you were doing.
Did you request to circle within class c airspace or did you just tell them you were going to?
I had discussed it earlier, so yeah, I only said “if it’s all right I’m going to circle”.
Super cool. Even just doing a low approach there would be awesome
Thank you for sharing this. Seeing and feeling that moment through your eyes reminds me I need to practice my go-arounds more often, thank you. The words I let out of my mouth while watching were a bit stronger than the “Oh boy” you voiced a second later. Glad you’re good, my friend.
Wow that is awesome. I have flown around 5 different CTLS's and 2 CTSW's. I miss those things! I have an Ikarus C42B myself.
Awesome stuff as always Ted!
Great video! Nice landing! Do you mind sharing how you mounted the camera on the lower empennage?
hey! it's just the adhesive gopro mount. Made sure the surface was very very clean. I've become convinced that the mount is more than sufficient at our speeds- people fly Extra 300s with wing cameras mounted that way. You can actually see a second mount up by the mains. I used that location and don't like it. You can see it in the last video (the go-around in high DA).
@@flysport_tedder Thanks. I am going to try it. I really like that camera angle
Pretty cool! Brought my Sierra in there many moons ago - spent 2 days washing the landing gear lol!
Nice! Where are you located?
@@flysport_tedder S50!
If this isn't the coolest landing spot and landing ever, I don't know what is. Love it!
Looking forward to flying with you, man.
Very cool, Ted! Nice job! Looks like a ton of fun 🙂
Thanks for showing your technique for approaching this airport. I'm definitely going there someday, maybe this summer.
great! make sure you're going at or before low tide, land on the correct sand, stay within the airport boundaries, and call the airport manager before you go. most importantly lemme know how it goes!
I always love hearing the sounds of your plane-so different from what I know. Beautiful landing. Tugs at my heartstrings to “fly along” with you over these beaches where I spent so much of my youth. Thank you 😊
thanks! yeah, the angry sewing machine sound :)
Second time's a charm!
I love just watching you fly, man. Always glad to see new content from you.
thanks Chris, this means a lot.
Wow, that's a sweet spot to land. How does the sand compare to grass as far as takeoff/landing roll?
it is fun! the feel is much closer to pavement. you can see that my tracks aren't leaving much of an imprint. plus I have fat tires (for a trike LSA).
The more I watch your videos, the more I think that a light sport would fit 80% of my mission profiles. What an incredible flight!
they are a lot of fun. and cheap to operate.
Oh hey! You talking enroute rather than voiceover. I like this change of pace. This is not to say that I dislike the voiceovers. It's just nice to get your perspective in the moment as well as when you've had time to think about it. Why do you think that beach based airports like this exist on the west coast but not on the east coast? My initial guess might have something to do with water temps and the attractiveness of using the space as a beach. Bonus takeoff: wow doesn't take long for you to get in the air. Also did you ever confirm the beached whale?
enroute talking- I just do so little talking to myself, and I only have one shot at it while doing it in the plane. I may try to do more, good to know. this is literally the only beach airport on the west coast. but WA/OR have low populations and a lot of beach. I think that's part of it. takeoff: that was even with a zero flap setting. I've measured it at 400ft when solo. whale: wasn't there. I've seen 'em on the beach before, when I spent more time down there.
@flysport_tedder I was hoping to see the whale. Oh whale, maybe next time!
Some great lessons there, thanks for showing us that DA is the real deal! And nice landing 😀
Thanks Nathan. Was hoping you’d get to see it. And it wasn’t a nice landing, it was.. acceptable.
Glad you came away from that flaps 15 to flaps 0 with just some slight butt pucker. Amazing how much energy you gain just dripping over those trees, it comes to haunt you in that float during the flair.
what an awesome place that must be to fly. i love GA landing vids. used to be airliners but now im all on that GA game
Great! You’ll really like the next one then 😀
I liked the sight picture on the second attempt much better.
Nice video. You handled it well. Your sight-picture looked good with 15 degrees of flaps on the go-around. Wonder if you kept those flaps in a little longer to build up some speed for climb-out?
I was worried about not being able to build speed, but in retrospect, probably would have been good to leave it.
Good work Teddy boy! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great video. You really broke down the issues well and the differing camera angles were helpful too. As always, I love the way you display the speed tape. Being able to see it overlayed with the rest of the view conveys so much useful information
thanks. Yeah, it's a lot of info and angles for a normal vid, but it really shows the situation. Certainly helped me understand it more.
Well done - I bet having the instinct to push and stay in ground effect longer is tough in a place like that. So cool.
