Love this talented homosexual composer (although I usually avoid describing individuals by their sexuality which is narrow and pigeonholes any person). Russia should be ashamed of its current homophobic leanings. Sadly, modern Russia has stifled art, including any variant and artistic expression.

A bit dry for my taste. Lacked excitment.
Foi através deste LP que eu comecei a ouvir a Quarta Sinfonia de Brahms, e logo me maravilhei. Começa com um 1º Movimento sombrio, mas suave, que se suavize numa determinação solene no 2º Movimento, reviltaliza-se de um dramatismo empolgante no 3ºMovimento, e termina com uma exaltação grandiosa no 4ºMovimento. Retempera a nossa alma. Será a mais dramática das sinfonias. (Martz Inura)

Why, does this piece suck?
@ColtraneTaylor It doesn't suck, in and of itself it's a great listen. But I am bothered by how the first movement sounds just a little too Beethovenian (to my ears, anyway), and therefore lacking in originality. It's always interested me that two people I know had it in their collection-but not the other three symphonies (which are also great, but I have fewer reservations about).
@ Oh ok. I was just here to see whether I would like anything about it. Well not really, like just about all classical.

@@ColtraneTaylor Classical music can certainly cause differences in people. I don't have time to get into the relative merits of say, The Eagles and The Beatles (to change the narrative). (Why did I change the narrative? Can't remember).

Just listened to this symphony straight through for the first time. The first movement is really slow and mellow, the main theme of it sounds like it was used for a musical box chime. The 2nd movement picks up some steam despite being marked adagio. The 3rd is quite playful, and the 4th closes off the work in a flurry of excitement. I still prefer Brahms' first symphony but would listen to this one again.

La Mutter ancora un po' acerba, ma si salva per la guida di Karajan. Complessivamente un'ottima esecuzione, soprattutto per la sublime poetica estratta dall'Adagio. Nella seconda parte di quel concerto di San Silvestro 1984 venne eseguito il Magnificat BWV 243 e Karajan toccò vertiginose altezze. Video pubblicato a suo tempo da DG con entrambi i capolavori bachiani eseguiti.
