Using OpenOCD to debug U-Boot and Linux Kernel

This is an internal talk I gave to the team last week about using OpenOCD to debug U-Boot and Linux kernel. The slides are available here: www.slideshare.net/menonnishanth/openocdk3pptx All examples used in this presentation are from Linux, U-boot, and OpenOCD master branches at the production time. The steps are valid on any of the Texas Instruments K3 SoC-based platforms, such as BeagleBone-A...

Microsoft Flight Simulator - tracing the river (Kauai, Hawaii)
I'm interested in using openOCD to read from a Risc-V on an FPGA (Microchip's PolarFire). I configured SoftConsole(Eclipse) to download the elf using a Flash Pro JTAG dongle. However, not sure I understand what's happening under the hood. I understand OpenOCD is a local server that accepts commands from the IDE.. yet, how does it talk to the Flash Pro Adapter? I see another local server (fpserver") is running, which I assume listens for commands from OpenOCD, yet how does OpenOCD know how to use this server? I don't see any (API) documentation for fpserver!
I assume something like www.microchip.com/en-us/development-tool/BEAGLEV-FIRE ? I suggest asking on discord.com/channels/1108795636956024986/1169639932206252103 channel discord.gg/Pjs7Rgcy (invitation link) I haven't had experience with flash Pro dongle www.microchip.com/en-us/development-tool/FLASHPRO5 and how it is supported.. at least looking at github.com/openocd-org/openocd/tree/master/tcl/interface I couldn't find a match unfrotunately.
The board is out of stock. Where to buy it?
If you can ask on discord discord.gg/bdaCb7mT it will be the best
Any thoughts how you can dump the chip's memory to a file? I purchased a FlashPro4 jtag adapter to program a Cortex-M3, but not sure how all this works. From, what I see, OpenOCD is a GDB server running on your computer, but uses "fpserver" to talk to the FlashPro4 jtag adapter/chip? So while Eclipse can download the elf using OpenOCD , I can't telnet directly to that port using putty (4444) . Interestingly, I *CAN* telnet to fpserver on 3334, however that seems to be an undocumented API.. so kinda in limbo.
Join us on IRC @ libera.chat and #openocd irc channel. It might be a better place to get clarification..
Should have covered your password :-)
Hehe.. I set it just for the videos.
Correction in Video: At approximately 5 minutes and 50 seconds, I say that the SoC is J721s2, also known as AM67. I'm afraid that's not right. It should have been: J722s is also known as AM67.
Joel Fernades and you have been great at covering kernel debugging. Another great video. The only grouse I have with BeagleV-Fire, BeagleY, etc is the use of Tagconnect pins for JTAG. How hard is it to populate a 10 pin micro-jtag connector ffs?
yeah, @turanamo I share the same peeve. argument is that JTAG users are very very few and far between.. and choice would have been not to populate the header (bbb style). But on the flip side, I do appreciate not having to run behind people to get them solder pins on my board.. just hate the economics of the cables..
How can i create this kind of flight plan ? Any suggestion ?
Try pilot2atc
Excellent presentation! Does the BeaglePlay have the XDS110 built-in by default? If it does, it means I don't require a J-Link/Lauterbach right? Also, do I need a TUMPA with the BeaglePlay since there is provision for a Tag-Connect? All I need is the Tag-Connect and TC2050-ARM2010 Adapter, right?
Thanks. To answer BeaglePlay does not have xds110 inbuilt. Tag connect with appropriate setup will work as long as OpenOCD supports it . I just prefer TUMPA personally. It just works for me all the time.
@@NishanthMenonThanks for your reply from which I could make an informed decision. Ditched BeaglePlay and bought the SK-AM62 instead, cost $246.82 shipping and taxes included. Guess I saved on the JTAG and cables. 😄
Neat trick! Pretty cool that usbip supports wsl now!
Would be awesome to see that self hosted stuff
Your wish is my command ;).. I will try and do a video later this week on that.
@@NishanthMenon Could you show doing it on a BBai64?

Nice!🔥
Nice explanation, please can you make some introduction to the BeaglePlay board , i'am planing to get this board , thank you .
There are quite a few on www.youtube.com/@beagleorg -> Are you looking for anything specific?
Very Informative 💯
Never seen an aspect ration this wide. Wow! That 103 does stall very easily, unfortunately. Wish the author had used the more powerful engine's model. Thanks for sharing.
I used to have triple monitor... With a 4k as the middle display.. yeah, did kinda end up wierd
@@NishanthMenon Very cool!

Xplane 11 on linux
it was nice tutorial ! thank so much ! But when i 'm following these steps. I got echo (" Output :") on screen, and i typed ( loadb -f /dev/ram0 ) but nothing happen. Help ???????
@aynusbay depends on the images you choose to put on it - the choice of u-boot and MLO is important - if you decide to use the version for diagnostics, yeah it will be similar to first use.
@hydrohobbyist - yes, the pserial is an alternate to pusb - it could be used instead - i personally have not created a video around it yet :(
Is there anyway of sending the x-loader from a windows terminal? i dont have linux at my disposal nor the experience to manipulate files on a live cd. I have tried using kermit protocol but it says failed.
@all thanks..
it works! thanks! great work.
Hey nice video.. i was planning to get a beagle board and ubuntu on it... im not much of an embedded system guy so i dont really know how these things work..all i know so far is it runs ubuntu..but it doesn't come with wifi inbuilt so i was wondering if an external usbwifi card would be supported? are the device drivers processor specific as in will the normal drivers work on an arm procsor? i am trying to build a device which can do packet injection.will it run when attched to the beagle board?
Gee thanks.. I have wished i had a little more time to clean up the video though.. anyways, there are couple of things planned: a) get the usb2tty working. - probably on u-boot v2? b) redo the video with that.. might be faster need to consider dumping u-boot v2 though.. if only we could make u-boot v1 work as good..
This is a good video...I've read the comments by jadonk...good critiquing! Thanks for posting and I wish you well on the advancement of your BB project!
Autoprogramming: It already does, I just explain what it does in the video..
usbtty: Not with the mainline version of uboot from denx tree. If we manage to push usb2serial adapter to u-boot mainline, yes we can do it.
fonts: I am still learning ;).. hopefully I can fix it up.. hmm.. must be my excitement with trying various styles causing this..
jadonk, Thanks for the feedback..
