I exhaustively detail an overlooked RPG from the Super Nintendo era. Love this game. Intro: 0:00 The Setup: 1:39 Gameplay Loop: 8:56 Optional Content: 21:35 Ancient Cave: 27:17 Bugs and Poor Translation: 34:09 Full Story Analysis: 38:32 Closing Remarks: 1:11:35
The fact newgame+ exists. CT was ahead of its time.
and yet the LAST version I played DS one was in 2008 but due to Toriyama's death it MAY NEVER get a PS4/PS5/Switch PORT of the DS one.
@@veghesther3204 I truly can't believe we don't have a port on modern consoles yet. I'm on copium that Square is working on something for that game 🤞
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... you were almost at the end. 3 more levels after that fight separated you from the credits.

But it’s a better game than Bubsy, right?
The soundtrack was so tediously worked on by Yasunori Mitsuda that he developed ulcers and had to be hospitalized. That is some intense dedication to trying to make the best music possible for the game.
@thepsychomagus Pure insanity but I guess it paid off. The soundtrack is incredible.
This is genuinely one of the best retrospective I have ever seen. Keep up the good work, excited to see more from you in the future 😭🙏
@@ChampionLink Thank you so much!
Speedy Gonzales is also one of the worst sonic clones
Hot take: This game is one of my favourite non-Nintendo platformers. The soundtrack was awesome, the first half of the game was always a blast for me to play through, the powerup system was neat and you could actually get a feel for how fast Rocky actually is during the freeway level since, you know, Rocky is shown OVERTAKING cars at freeway speeds. I'll admit that the game is extremely unforgiving later on (and impossible to beat on console without the infinite continues cheat) and the sewer/clock tower levels aren't really any fun to go through at all, but I still have fun with this game, even if I usually only play up to the chili factory boss and not much further because then it stops being fun.
Thank you for this wonderful review. I also listen to the music constantly 😂
Perfect work music.
I still wanna see a part of this?
I once imagined a game like this in my head with a main character with a design similar to this (well rocky with his first hair cut that is) and a similar name... what the heck... also whoever made this was clearly racist like dang
I loved that game, especially the ending hit very hard. <3 Also... Dragonballs erm... Eggs :D
Boogerman is the best
There's a game called jazz jackrabbit 2 it's damn good
love it
"What sort of creature is Rocky Rodent?" You ask? Simple. Rocky...is a Mistake.
Nope, Bubsy is a mistake, Rocky is some kind of hamster... Or maybe both are mistake
@@nachomind4531Bubsy is a feline mistake, Rocky is a rodent mistake
I’m sorry, HOW does this have less than 500 views????
Lmao you’re playing a game with a dead battery, “faulty cartridge,” lmao.
I mean, you never really see cartoon characters have a ghost go to Hell despite, whatever they could've done.
What about Tom from Tom & Jerry?
I entered this video automatically withouth even noticing. During my first watch I thought: "Hey, what a great channel!" but then I noticed the numbers of your video and felt fabblergasted. Seriously, it feels like you should atleast have a decent number like 1k subscribers. Nonetheless to say, I really enjoyed the video, I watched through the end and I can't wait to watch more of your videos in the future!
Fun game 👍
That was really good ! You deserve way more views
This has the vibe of old game review videos, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. You deserve more subscribers!

Rocky will haunt your dreams.
he will haunt all our dreams lol
Great video!
Thank you!
I’m also a Chrono Cross player first. I do love both games, but Cross does have a special spot in my heart.
I am a guy who borrowed Chrono Trigger from a friend and from the moment I turned on the SNES fell in love with what would be my favorite game of all time. However I am not one of the Trigger fans that hate Cross but find a love of the game in its own right.
@@roxaslove23 Cross has an unmatched atmosphere. It's definitely a more flawed game than Trigger, but I still have a lot of love for it.
Strangely I was so bored with this RPG.. I can tell it's good but it was not exciting to me. The economy was really badly balanced, I always had tons of money, the graphics were good but the village and dungeon environments were so overused it felt very dull after a while. The musics were great though and it was quite rare to see Zelda elements in an RPG!
@36.59: I believe the garbled text is due to the game trying to decipher Japanese text that was left in the script. The other graphical glitches seem to be errors in the game code itself rather than the dialogue script, so it's likely that somebody messed up the code somewhere when they were handling the localization. I have no experience with localization in the SNES days, but I can imagine that's probably what happened. As for simple typos in the dialogue, these are SUPER easy to miss because the dialogue is often just in a huge, long spreadsheet (this is how it's done today, so I'm going to assume they did something similar back then... but it may have been even more crude and hard to spot typos).
solid pronunciation, I watched the whole thing and still wondered where was the 'misspronunciation' of names.
@arkhire5883 Appreciate it! With games from this era, I know pronunciation can be a bit different from person to person so I put the disclaimer just in case. For example, a popular way to pronounce Marle is Marl (rhyme with Carl), but I've always said Marle the way I did in the video. Just wanted to cover my bases 😂
48:19 my personal record beating gades was lvl 21 surviving with everyone. But I had every secret items from previous boss fights
Test of Time I get it very clever
Everyone keeps misunderstanding that the amulet given to Janus. It is not Marle's pendant to the point where I think someone misinterpreted the scene and everyone just apes it without paying attention to the in game text. The game makes it very clear that the Schala's pendant is Marle's pendant when it shows Schala using a pendant to open the door to the Mammon Machine and its the exact same sprite as Marle's pendant and then later it's mention that Schala used the last of her power to save everyone on the Ocean Palace. What makes it even more frustrating this time is that you went from claiming that Janus's amulet later becomes Marle's pendant then moments later note that Marle's powered up to unlock the mammon-locked doors and chests. Also, I don't think the game actually calls out that the amulet Schala gave Janus looks like Marle's pendant, but if it did it's only to show they were both made by Schala. Janus's amulet is supposed to be another reference to Janus being Magus as he's equipped with an accessory called Amulet when you get him.
I haven't seen others talk about this scene, but I definitely misinterpreted it. I'm aware that Schala's pendant is the same as Marle's pendant. I guess the term "pendant" stuck in my head and I conflated the pendant Schala gave Janus to her own pendant which eventually becomes Marle's. I didn't even realize that Magus starts off with the Amulet in his equipment. Even after diving deep into this game, I keep learning new things 😃 Thanks for your explanation, and I hope you can otherwise enjoy the video 🙂
@@hutchkey2397 the nitpic wouldn't have bothered me so much had the surrounding content not been excellent, so yeah, I enjoyed.
Feel better?
I often wonder what the point of Eric is in my own life as well. He is still the Master though.
Marle is the only realy way to pronounce her name. <3
I certainly can't get myself to say it any other way 😂
Love your videos bro, glad to see younger people enjoying the games I loved so much as a kid.

Dude rises from the dead and drops a banger. And I don't even *like* Chrono Trigger. Good work. Looking forward to what's next.
How can you not like chrono trigger? I understand not putting it as your favorite but to not like it at all?
@@2changotb Around the time I played it, I was playing a bunch of other games I liked more, I guess! So it didn't leave as much of an impact as other games. I wasn't a huge fan of Akira Toriyama's art (which has put me off from Dragon Quest for like years, too, and even then, all I've played is the Builder games), the game didn't have as much tooth as I was hoping for (I was used to like, Lufia: Fortress of Doom as far as combat goes, and Lufia: Rise of the Sinistrals had me expecting puzzles out of a JRPG), and it just got overshadowed by whatever else I was playing, like Treasure of the Rudras and Half Life. My "this game is/isn't fun" takes tend to be unpopular 😅I'm an ardent FF12 defender and FF7 original/remake disliker, I enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on launch, and I think Doom 2016 is a better game than Doom Eternal. Mind, I *do* like some things, the music, mainly. And I had fun ripping through the flying fortress with Crono and Ayla. As a complete *thing*, though, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Never realized that this game came out the year I was born. After watching this video, I really feel like I've got to do a play through soon! RIP Mr. Toriyama.
I was the 58th view of this video. And as any video reviewing Chrono trigger in depth, I approve of this video.
This game can't be talked about enough.
He can alter the order of phrases in sentences in my brain -- he will do this with the intention of manipulating others, usually to think less of or attack his scape goat (me) He can choose my thoughts, not just my words. My mind is "taken" as they put it in psychic shoptalk while he trained her using me.
I hope you make more of these. I found your channel when you gave Lufia II the love it deserves. Dont let your dreams be dreams and keep it up!

Awesome Game this
I don't know I haven't found this video until now. This video made replay this again. I played this game after I got tired my N64 when I was a kid. It was a random game I bought at a down town grocery market, I think I paid $10 for it at the time. I bonded so hard with this game, as it took me about a whole school year to finish. To me it was an absolute masterpiece. The ending hit me so hard. Possibly the first time I teared up in a game. However I never could convince my friends to play it through. I unfortunately like, mostly everyone else I knew, traded their old beaten to death games in for later generation games, like Halo. Between playing hardcore sweaty halo infinite, I always find myself going back to this game. Thank you so much for making this. This wins the award for the best hidden gem for the SNES
loved this game

I really enjoyed watching this video and would love to see more of this! Thanks for making it. I have actually never heard of this game before this video and now I’m considering playing it.
