air sounds for Bb clarinet explanations and examples
Is that a contrabass clarinet
thank you
Im wondering if you could resonate the instrument completely submerged in water. Like going to a pool and trying to play underwater. I have an old fiberglass clarinet i could try it with, but im also thinking the air needed might surpass my lung capacity.
Explains why people think squidward sounds terrible
I couldn't help wondering if you could string a guitar with it. An erhu would probably be easier. A general bass clarinet question: whatever happened to drip keys? I play bc as my main instrument and risk drowning in long band rehearsals.
You've got to keep using that swab!
Does this work on bass clarinet ?? :0
This is an unhelpful answer but: kind of
@@hroche83 I'm assuming the sound quality is diminished even more ? as well as loudness levels
Good evening. May you please tell me the length and diameter of the tube? Thank you. Best regards from Rimini. PS: If you come to Italy you will always be welcome guest.
It's 16cm long and 19mm wide! (that's the outside dimensions for the width there) - and thank you! :)
@@hroche83 Thanks a lot Heather!
sounds like an 808 when you do slap tongue
amazing comparison, I love it
Love this! I'd love to see an extension on the bell too! I bet the multiphonics go wild when that happens
That's a great idea!
Omg this is so cool, you're so cool!
Aw shucks *blush*
What is the difference between no. #7 and #20?
I'm think I'm in love with you... Amazing creativity
You are so kind
amazing concept and sound!!
Michael lowenstern is my favorite bass clarinet and composer in Brooklyn and I want to see him in concert in new york city this year!
And I spent all that money on an octave pedal!
I seem to remember a video of Lol Coxhill playing soprano sax underwater in a swimming pool. ruclips.net/video/rq3V-kciCWg/видео.html
Amazing!
Maybe this is part of why whales sound the way they do.
Nature's clarinets
I think I may use this in a composition I'm currently working on. Is that alright?
Of course! That's what these videos are here for :)
ok... this is going to sound crazy, but hear me out. You need a plastic clarinet with waterproof pads and glue and the ability to submerge much more of the clarinet into the water. I need to know what that will sound like even if it ends up being a complete failure.
not crazy at all, I'd love to know too!
I can see how these could be used constructively in a composition, especially if amplified - Zappa once got the didgeridoo player of the Ensemble Modern to play into a bucket of water but it sounded more like a bad case of the squits!
That's brilliant - someone else was telling me about this just this weekend when I was talking about making this video :)
What happens if you wrap your thumb and index finger around the open end of the pipe and use your other fingers to vary the opening size?
I can lower the pitch a tiny bit but it's really minimal since the opening is so small
Thank you, Heather! This answers my question I had when seeing your Bassclarinet Water in the Horn video.
Hi Heather. Thank you for this very helpful resource!!
I don't konw why RUclips recommended this to me... but I'm glad it did.
I know nothing about clarinets or woodwinds outside of what the average fourth grader who learned Hot Cross Buns on a recorder would know. I am equally confused and excited. Far out.
I love this. Welcome to a confusing and exciting space on your RUclips feed 🤪 we aim to please
This has mad potential for sound design, I'm gonna need some proper samples of this!
Would love to hear an ensemble of this madness. Great effect!
Oh my word can you imagine, that would be so good
Love the shirt! The Smile's new album is great. Beautiful sound by the way
Thank you! And yes - love that record :)
Not responding to emails because so much time has passed it would be embarrassing to do so is basically how I live my life, so no judgement there
With water sounds abit like a didgeridoo.
been doin that since the early seventies, also metal b flat and e flat in a bowl.
hehehe blub blub blub blub ^w^
Sweet! Now do it with custard!
🤣
With sliced banana??
@@hroche83 CLARINET TRIFLE!
Lovely effect! Does it work with the Bb- and Eb-Clarinets as well lowering them in a bowl of water or is it detrimental to the material of the instruments?
I'm definitely going to do another video about this (although since I saw you just followed me on insta there's a short clip of me doing it there in a few months ago!)
Water is a great sonic aid - have heard some incredible sounds from gongs being lowered into tanks of water!
3:15 that resonance is crazy ... low overtones (under tones?) Thank you for showing this and talking about it in such detail. I am wondering about making my own no-finger-hole horn of sorts hmm.
such a good guide for both students and pros. thanks!
You can do some cool 2000’s techno with that!
Oh my goodness I would love that
Thank you dear Heather, the video was very helpful for me👌👌
I've seen Dries Tack in curious chamber players do some stuff like this before. Sounds awesome!
He's amazing!!
@@hroche83 right??!?
All of your reasons for not replying seem totally reasonable to me to be honest, go easy on yourself!
I think Dennis Brain (great french horn player) did something similar where he played a concerto with a garden hose in the 50s
I think Hoffnung might have been involved
The higher overtones almost sound trumpet esc. Very interesting sound. I’m a saxophonist (tenor) btw
On behalf of composers everywhere: thank you Heather!
Can you unroll the PVC clarinet, and snake it, say, into different rooms?
🤣
Defo. Did a piece once where I had an "assistant" who had the other end and twirled it around the room like he was going to lasso a cow. Quite a cool spacialisation....
@@hroche83 [aside] Reminded of Oren Marshall’s spatialized tuba. [/aside]
There's a great trio by a Mexican composer called Hugo Morales Murgia which uses similar DIY reed instruments, except the performers have to gradually cut the pipe during the performance
Ooh that's fun, I've got to find the score...
@@hroche83 it's not the most exciting score if I remember correctly, but it's definitely an exciting piece!
yesssssssssssss
Is it easy/hard/impossible to isolate overtones?
Not easy - the fundamental does tend to creep in, but definitely possible!
Love youuuu
Used to play bass clarinet, dont anymore, following you cause i miss playing it
Aw, that's lovely - it really is a great instrument :)
