As you pray the Sorrowful Mysteries understand that St John of the Cross realized that the agony of Jesus in the garden is the spiritual "dark night of the soul". Jesus, who in his life has freely spoken to God, at this critical moment when he attempts to speak with God, there is no response. Three times he asks that the cup may pass, & each time immediately confirms his uniformity to God's will by saying not what I want, but your will be done. And then Jesus follow through by the suffering of his passion & death on the cross.
