    It all seems easy until you are laying in your tent, exhausted and it's 8 o'clock at night and still 90 degrees outside. No power, hauling water, not a single luxury. All by yourself as primitive as can be. No renting heavy equipment because your broke and worried where your next meal will come from. So, you are digging up soil by hand to fill a sandbag to build a structure that you may die before you ever finish.

    I actually wondered if the shape and strength of a school bus would be strong enough to be bermed over like an easy Earthship with the windows acting as the passive solar gain. I mean aren't these buses supposed to be able to handle impact for safety.

    • @TerraformTogether

      @SolsticeOnAnOdyssey I don't think you could totally bury them without Interior reenforcement. The structure of them is pretty thin

  • @SolsticeOnAnOdyssey
    @SolsticeOnAnOdyssey 21 день назад

    So what was the point in having the bus buried? Since the roof is not being covered over, does it still give you the thermal mass and insulation by only half burying it? Thanks!

    • @TerraformTogether
      @TerraformTogether 18 дней назад

      Mostly it's just fun if I'm being honest 😅 I do notice a difference in temperature from our above ground bus and the below ground bus. Burying it has made a nice deck platform on top. Eventually I'd love to put a rain roof over it to keep it cool and collect water.

    I live in central Appalachia. Basically a rain forest. Your opinion on using earth bags and/or hyperadobe if one takes great pains to lay bags on top of cement and over use of moisture barriers all the way up?

    • @TerraformTogether
      @TerraformTogether 28 дней назад

      Moisture isn't too big of a deal pending you have good overhangs. The bigger concern with earthbag is how the outside temperature is. If you're consistently hot or consistently cold the interior of the house will reflect that because it absorbs the temps rather than insulates against them. They work well in desert environments because it takes about 12 hours for heat to pass through the walls. So when it's hot during the day it's cool inside, when it's cold at night that heat is released. You may look into Superadobe bags instead of Hyperadobe bags considering the wet nature to be safe. The bags are fully woven instead of a mesh so they would act as a moisture barrier I assume. Hope this helps!

    I think it was smart to make your build blend in the way it does so if you did get an immigration of people going through the property, they would not notice anything out of the ordinary to 'investigate'. I disagree with people saying build a deck or covering. Keeping it low key keeps prying eyes or future drone searches from finding it. Great video!

    if your roof structure can take the weight, i would put a raised garden bed over it, to give you more insulation. even if it is weeds and cactus in the bed. Also, personally, i would put loose stone cairns or pillars around those air vents. and one other item, if the back fill on the outside of the earth bags is mostly gravel, I would do an experiment and wet that area thouroughly, or do close observation after a rain event soaks it, to see if your cellar temp drops substantially, like by 20 degrees. if so you have built a very large zeer pot, or desert fridge.

    • @TerraformTogether
      @TerraformTogether 28 дней назад

      We piled about a foot of straw on top which helped. I'll have to look up Zeer pot. I haven't heard that term. I don't notice a big temp difference after a monsoon rain though.

    Would this type of building be suitable for Tennessee climate?

    • @TerraformTogether
      @TerraformTogether 2 месяца назад

      Earth bags work best when you have drastic temperature changes from day to night because they will hold the heat from the day and release it into the building at night. If Tennessee is like Texas where it is 98 during the day and 95 at night, earthbag may struggle unless you build underground. In those cases you're looking more for insulation than thermal mass. Take a look at ICF construction maybe?

    Wow, you put a lot of energy in time to the test sat and watched it today on a Sunday just giving me a little bit of ideas. I mean, I like a lot of trees I live in East Tennessee so it kind of gives me a little ideas. I got one that goes down to the back on 4.5 acres but you have to build things into the wall of things down there which I would like to do that which I thought was pretty interesting. Go to RUclips for everything anyway pretty interesting ideas specially where you’re at I noticed you put screens over those you have all that out there….

      Glad you enjoyed. I don't know a lot about Tennessee but I would make sure you don't hit the ground water table if you decide to build under ground

    Anyone knows where to buy these bags? I live in honduras and seen some folks building with regular bags, but these seem much more manageable

    A little thing that occurred to me, as far as keeping the cellar cool; electric refrigerators &/or kegerators generate heat. When they operate they are pumping heat into the space as they are running... you might fabricate some kind of simple plenum enclosing the cooling tube's on the back a d plumb that into the vent tubes... and vent as much of that heat outside as possible. Your effort gives me some good inspirational juices for applying to my own little place.

      They do generate some heat. It's not detrimental to the space and nice to have them down there since they pull less electricity when they are in a cooler space on our little solar system. Trade offs for everything.

     @TerraformTogether I know it's been a year and I'm sure you've moved on by now, but just in case anyone wants to understand what method could be more effective, I'll toss in my $.02. If you watch how bricklayers build an arch, they'll start with a form at the beginning. They build a complete arch that's only 1 brick thick. That first row acts as a support for the next rows. The mortar is enough to support one brick as it sticks to the first row. So I'd recommend that the first end of the arch is put up with a little better support to start, from the bottom up. Then repeat that as you work your way toward the middle. If it's a small arch and you're moving fast, you could start at one end, then go to the other end and do the same thing while the first arch row dries. This helps you work toward the middle while being supported all the way across. This is how we learn! I really hope that this didn't stop you from trying again. If I quit every time I failed, I'd be sitting here like a stone afraid to move. lol!

      Yeah, that was my realization after the fact. But it all worked out because we now have a much cooler shop

    In Alberta and Saskachewan when they made root cellars and ice sheds they would cover them with a sloped roof for obvious reasons, sheding water and air circulation. Juat curious why you decided on a flat roof.

      We built on a high-spot so there's not a worry of water flooding over the top of the building. We get such little rain, it's not too big of a deal. We are slowly building up more insulation on top with straw and layers of dirt.

    I don't understand why you would go to the trouble of ripping up a live edge piece of mesquite only to glue the pieces back together with a live edge piece. It would make sense if you were making end grain boards but these are not.

    Could have used solar lights for outside. Also, hope they face down and are shaded to avoid night sky light pollution

      I like hardwire. They are really bright to make the outdoor area safe to work in after dark. They don't get used very often though.
