FabFugues
Добавлен 21 апр 2014
Fugues are the highest form of polyphonous music. FabFugues collects keyboard, choir and orchestral fugues from many composers and different eras.
Ludwig van Beethoven: "Funeral March (excerpt)" from Symphony 3 (op. 55)
Beethoven's genius led to great musical innovation but his defiance of traditional rules also meant that he would compose few structurally rigid fugues. The fugue from "funeral march" (op. 55, second movement) is no exception: It amounts to little more than the exposition of the double theme, and one reptition, the other bars mere allusions to the theme, without inversions, stretti, organ points or other fugual techniques. It sounds impressive nonetheless.

Bach: Cantata "Herr, gehe nicht ins Gericht mit deinem Knecht ." BWV 105, No. 1 "Denn vor dir ..."
Просмотров 6237 месяцев назад
An astonishing fugue written by the Master - J.S. Bach. The words are "Denn vor dir wird keine Lebendiger gerecht." ('For nobody living can meet your standard'). The theme starts with a marked note ("Denn / -recht"), followed by two vigirous forths, and finally a baroque phrasing. The piece is almost a permutation fugue (i.e. the theme re-appears in different voices regularly throughout the fug...
Joseph Haydn: Symphony 70, Hob.I:70: No. 4 Allegro con brio
Просмотров 4939 месяцев назад
Haydn's final movement from his symhonie 70 is a powerful three-voice fugue with a theme based on four staccato quavers and two minims. The theme becomes ever more vigorous, with frequent forte entries supported by the timpanies. For the first time, I have indicated each instance of the theme with a little shiny box. Do you find that helpful?
Franz von Suppé: "Cum Sanctis Tuis" from Requiem (no op.)
Просмотров 58111 месяцев назад
Franz von Suppé wrote his requiem in 1855 for Franz Pokornys. The Agnus Dei section features a vibrant, creative fugue on the words "Cum sanctis tuis." The modulation to B major (50 secs in) sounds particularly nice. A stretto (2.21 mins in) leads into the crescendo for the final chords.
Hector Berlioz: "Hosanna in Excelsis" from Requiem Op. 5
Просмотров 479Год назад
Berlioz's Requiem was composed in 1837. Its 9th movement, Sanctus, includes a grand choral fugue on the words "Hossana in excelsis." Its features a brisk, rising subject, the marked high notes underlying the meaning of the phrase, "Glory in the highest." The middle section has a stretto. A uni sono leads into the final, glorious, fortissimo bars of the piece.
Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier II, No 5 BWV 874 "Fuga in D Major"
Просмотров 271Год назад
The fugue in D-Major from WTC Part 2 is one of Bach's most tightly-knit fugues. Its subject can be divided into two motives, the three identical quavers followed by two quarter notes, then three downwards leading quavers and two quarter notes. The second of these motives also functions as the accompaniment of the subject, appears 109 times and is present in 161 of the 200 beats of the piece! An...
Bach: Cantata "Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt" BWV 68, No 5 "Wer an ihn gläubet"
Просмотров 761Год назад
"Wer an ihn gläubet" is an astonishingly complex fugue. It features two themes, one rising on the words "Wer an ihn gläubet, der wird nicht gerichtet" 'Who believes in him will not be judged' the other , a rough inversion of the first, descending on the words, "Wer aber nicht gläubet, der ist schon gerichtet" 'But who does not believe in him is already judged.' The former also rises through the...
Clara Schumann: Fugue in f-sharp minor (no op.)
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 года назад
An absolute jewel of a fugue. Mature, intricate, full of ideas. The subject is a relentless, staccatissimo sequence, which makes it easy to identify throughout the piece. This signal is needed, too, because the subject itself is complex, set against a 3/4 measure with many syncopes and unpredictable jumps. Some bars are full of deep, heart-wrenching longing. And then, of course, there is the wo...
Clara Schumann: Fugue in g-minor, Op. 16-2
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 года назад
A beautiful fugue with a dramatic, markedly rhytmic yet catchy and melodic theme. It shows Clara Schumann's unique style but somewhat subdued, as if the fugue was an exercise in immitation, rather than an expression of her heart. Yet, it shows so much potential. and is, as far as I can tell, technically correct while remaining very easy on the ear. Hard to believe Clara Schumann had doubts abou...
Bach: "Art of the Fugue" BWV 1080 No. 9 "Contrapunctus IX"
Просмотров 9323 года назад
Contrapuntus 9 of "The Art of the Fugue" is a double fugue. Its first theme features an octave jump followed by a fast sequence of downwards and upwards runs. The second theme is the main theme of the "Art of the Fugue." The fast tempo of the first theme and the slow, marked nature of the second contrast sharply and allow rich contrapuntal exploration. The piece is structurally dense and master...
Händel: "Allegro" from Concerto Grosso No. 1, HWV 319, No. 4
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.5 лет назад
The first Concerto Grosso of Händel's "Twelve Grand Concertos" features in its fourth movement a fugal composition with a catchy subject. While fugal in nature, the composition is not a strict fugue in execution. Rather, it has soloists (concertino) and the larger orchestra (ripieno) alternating. The contrapuntal material includes allusions to the theme as well as complete inversions of the the...
Mozart: "Cum Sancto Spiritu" from KV 66 Dominicus Mass
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.6 лет назад
Mozart composed the Missa solemnis in C major "Dominicus" in 1769 at the age of only 13. Number 2 "Gloria" contains as its last number a very mature fugue on the words "Cum Sancto Spiritu". The subject is quite melodic, features a heavy first beat, and syncopes that contrast dramatically with the accompaniment. The piece re-starts after a pause with a stretto subject leading right into â classi...
Verdi "Sanctus" from Messa da Requiem
Просмотров 15 тыс.6 лет назад
Verd's Requiem shows his style in full maturity. It contains grandiose orchestrations, vigorous rhythms and some of the loudest unamplified music ever composed. The "Sanctus" is a sophisticated double fugue set for two choirs.
Bach: Cantata "Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes" BWV 76, No 1 "Es ist keine Sprache noch Rede""
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.7 лет назад
Bach composed "Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes" (The heavens are telling the glory of God) in Leipzig in 1723. The opening chorus includes a splendid fugue on the words "Es ist keine Sprache noch Rede", culminating in a trumpet triumphantly carrying the theme to the end.
Bach: Cantata "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis" BWV 21, No 6 "Dass er meines Angesichtes""
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.7 лет назад
The sixth movement in Bach's cantata "Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis" culminates in a permutation fugue of remarkably logical structure on the words "Dass er meines Angesichtes Hilfe und mein Gott ist" 'For being the help of my countenance and my God.'

Is this a four-voice fugue? I only count three throughout.
Fav
I jelq to this
Thank you! Who is the pianist here?
Who’s the pianist that is playing this? This is my fav interpretation of this piece
How great you can transpose Bach to any instrument and it always clicks.
Thanks for sharing!
Why does this fugue, performed like this, seem like a comic jingle played for her friends at the end of a birthday party by an exhibitionist and somewhat snobbish little girl?... Why?
Why does it sound like its digitally slowed down? Nevertheless, this is probably the first time i heard a Clara Schumann oiece!
Performers?
Wow, this fugue is awesome, a real gem.
You are quite right; the noted Haydn scholar HC Robbins Landon described the fourth movement of Symphony 70 as ‘…a giant triple fugue of incandescent power’.
It looks like the instruments on this score are: 4 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 4 Clarinets in Bb, 4 Horns in Eb, 4 Horns in E, 4 Horns in Bb (lower Bb), 8 Bassoons, 4 Cornets in Bb (under parenthesis it says cornets à piston), 4 Tubas, S1+S2, A, T, B, with strings parts cut off. On the score on IMSLP that I'm looking at however, the winds have dropped off completely at this section of the Sanctus however leaving exclusively the choir+strings; I don't know which orchestration is Berlioz' intention/revised finalized intention. Thank you for making these videos FabFugues!
Thanks! It is an arresting piece - I'd previously only heard his 'Light Cavalry Overture', but von Suppe clearly knew his craft. I am wondering what the rest of the work is like? Not sure I get your comment about a modulation into B major at 50 secs in - if you mean bar 117, isn't it just a standard shift into C major?
I'm very happy you enjoy this as well. :) "b-flat - g -g || f - e-flat - d - e natural || F" sounds a lot like B-flat major or g-minor to me. That's bar 118, yes. That's the submediant of d-minor, the key of the piece, so it's tightly related, whereas C major would be quite far out...
Doesn’t sound like Bach to me! It sounds like a Mozart theme. Cool to hear it for the first time!
Nice, I much prefer hearing fugues on separate monophonic instrument, to a single keyboard!
Thanks so much for bringing my attention to this - I hadn't heard it!
❤❤❤❤
I prefer harpsichord
Great! Do you also have the prelude?
This is such a gorgeous piece ❤❤❤❤
i think you mean b-flat major?
She is arguably better than her husband in the counterpoint department. Beautiful fugue.
Her husband wrote contrapuntal works of a lucidity that was seldom matched in the romantic era, including but not limited to m.ruclips.net/video/4WVhGtgnA3g/видео.html Six Studies in Canon Form m.ruclips.net/video/Afxr6pWwejk/видео.html Piano Sonata no 2 in G Minor m.ruclips.net/video/EClZICLRxrE/видео.html Piano Sonata no 3 in F Minor
I played it far slower many years ago but this interpretation is incredible. Nothing is lost in clarity and conviction through each twist and turn with such fine playing even at this tempo.

Greetings from a composer
Meine Got auf der Herrn Jesu christ ist leben hoffe du dem Herrn
This cute piece has a clear melodic connection with Quam olim from Mozart's requiem, and also with episode from his own Nelson mass and of course, Quam olim from M. Haydn's requiem
Mastered baroque choral counterpoint as an early teen. A genius!
Stop with the fast Bach. Just STOP!!! You are completely ruining the interpretation of the slower Baroque Period.
let people interpret the way they like and i like this peice played fast and bach was a harpsicord virtuoso so i imagine he was thinking his peice were played fast and baroque leaves room for any interpretation so stop being so snobby about bach
Great composition!
Handel school. Wonderful.
Performed for and dedicated to , my beloved Alexander ~
Wow, this is a little great fugue. Thanks to have posted this musical🎶 gem💎. 😃👏👏
Not a FYUfuw
This is by far one of my favorites Bach fugues. I learned it and it's on my channel
Nice exposition, where's the fugue?
Hey, Bungalow Bull, what did you kill
Not bad, but the fact that you wrote voices as chords with ties and not as actual separate voices makes reading and appreciating the counterpoint a little difficult.
true but maybe the notation programs in 2006 weren't that advanced yet or he was using a free one
He wrote this when he was 13, btw.
Why do we have to play everything of Bach so fast? It sounds like a lot of scribble. So what if the pianist can wiggle his fingers fast? It does nothing for the music.
No, you’re wrong. Bach fast and furious is ideal. Playing it well and with amazing speed is the highest form. I invite you to listen to some other fast Bach pieces on this channel and you will agree, they are better faster than any mere amateur humans would play them.
@@fabfugues8582 To FabFugues: Wanda Landowska made two recordings of Bach's C minor Fantasy reason being that her first recording was done at lightning speed on the harpsichord. She herself admitted that at a fast tempo the harpsichord was more a punkety-plunk popcorn sound. Her second recording yielded a sonorous, moving sound at a slower pace, much richer in quality. The instrument can be played played either as a percussive or singing instrument. It is unfortunate that Bach spent so much time (Brandenburg Concertos, for example), only to hear performers gloss over the counterpoint rather sloppily, the harmony being reduced to speechlessness. I heard a very capable performer play Bach's C minor 5-part fugues (BK I Well-Tempered Clavier) at a tempo that reduced the piece to virtually nothing. That particular fugue is magnanimous in harmony and a fast pace does no justice to the gravity of cognitive musical content. I seriously doubt my appraisals are inaccurate especially when the motives that Bach use were designed for explicit purposes of expression.
Completely AGREE. The Baroque Period was actually very slow. These interpreters are crazy.
@@fabfugues8582 No, I am not wrong. The harpsichord and clavichord are designed to resonate when plucked allowing overtones to ring out. The strings are long and these frequencies manifest after a duration of time. Wanda Landovska, famous harpichordist first recorded Bach's Cm Fantasy at a very rapid tempo and conceded that it was too pluckety-pluck. She then re-recorded it at a feisty tempo but slow enough to bring out the rich harmonics that Bach intended.
@@stevenrodak2196 Okay, you're right.
Hey! Is it somewhat possible to get in touch with you? I am also fugue addict (my playlists are nothing but collections of fugues :-D).
Sure. I read my comments. What do you want to talk about?
Wow this is fast
Grande fuga!
This wonderful fugue, in some points reminds me a little bit of the Corrente from Partita 6 (which is also in e minor)

Anyone know who these performers are? Is the recording available on CDs?
Sorry, I really don’t know. Someone.
Very good performance
Man, that was fast LOL
