    Yeah, long books can take a while to get going - I know this from the Russian classics I've read. Of course, what draws me to long classics is the connection they have to things like philosophy and history. Like, Les Miserables - people complain about the digressions, but that's the thing for me: I don't necessarily read just for the stories and characters. This is why I like Dostoevsky, his characters are meant to be representatives of the ideas culminating in Russia at the time; they approach a fundamental saying: "people embody ideas." And those ideas can be from lifetimes ago or the ones right now presently. That's why I read fiction: to encapsulate ideas through means of drama and themes; but even then we must be careful to not let poetry blind us to the truth of the matter. That is where philosophy comes into play. Enjoyed the video!

    Seemed like an interesting line up of books - well, other than the one about the pornstar. That makes me squirm in my seat to think about that premise; but I won't go off on a tangent, lol. And hopefully the liberal mass media won't come knocking on my door. The holier-than-thou attitude can get annoying, but we have to keep in mind where it comes from: a place of virtue, or the want for virtue. And so I respect the likes of those people more than those who are amoral - like whoever wrote the book previously mentioned. But that's just my two cents. Lol. Enjoyed the video.

    I'm still waiting for a philosophy book review!!! Lol. Jk. I need to start working out again. Last year I got down to 170 lbs, but now I'm at about 220 - which could be worse at 6'0. I want to shoot for 190-200 again. I think that'll be a good sustainable weight. My biggest goal is to finish my writing project for Plato around October. If I do about 400 words a day, I should. Reading-wise I plan to keep my current system going. I do about 150 pages a day, 13 books, and have an embedded note-taking and journaling practice for 4 of those books. Given that my pages are spread throughout so many books, I never really read one in a single month. I just focus on daily pages read rather than books read.

    • @BookishBrooke
      @BookishBrooke 8 месяцев назад

      I’m going to need your most accessible philosophy book recommendation to get into that lol! But these are great goals! Your reading and writing system sound well thought out - good luck in achieving your goals!

    Books I got this month? Not many. Let's see... (off the top of my head, lol), I got a book about George Berkeley, the famous idealist philosopher, which serves as my introduction to his thought . . . that's the only one I can think of right now, lol, but I know I got some others. I've been reading it for a few days. I'm an idealist, I think in terms of universals, abstracts - modes of general thought - and so Berekely's Immaterialism really interests me. Been going steady with my writing project for Plato's Symposium - at 22,000 words out of 100. I haven't hit too many obstacles. Yet. I'm just waiting for the ball to drop, when the ideas don't flow like they should. And if I could escape this cloudy headedness that would be great. I don't blame you for putting down that one book about the cheating wife. Terrible thing to think about. I sometimes wonder about why someone may cheat. One of the biggest reasons, and it has to do with our current culture, is the casualization of sex. It teaches men and women to view it as a form of indulgence and pleasure that lacks all emotion, logic, and beauty. It detaches them from real intimacy and so the bonds of loyalty snap in two. It's a coldness. That's the thing: this so called "progressive" culture is trying to remove real love and replace it with some knock-off. A love that hasn't the grace and purity to last. Lol. That's why I'm an ascetic. Forgive me for going off. It just kinda struck a little bit of a nerve. 😅 Enjoyed the video!

    • @BookishBrooke
      @BookishBrooke 8 месяцев назад

      What a comment! I hope your cloudy headedness has gone away and you haven’t hit any obstacles in your writing Project yet! I don't like spice at all; in fact I disagree with its production and the swarming mass of people who read it - but that's just me. Moreover, it gets into my ideal of morally based aesthetic quality . . . I digress. Enjoyed the vlog!

    Let's see... the best fiction book I read in November was Stalingrad by Vasily Grossman; some others were Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy, and Typhoon by Joseph Conrad. My favorite philosophical works were Kant's Metaphysics of Morals and Rousseau's Social Contract. I've also been enjoying Emerson's essays (so might, the transcendentalists) as well as St. Augustine - his Confessions and his City of God. A few more will go unnamed. Had a good, somewhat tiresome and stressful reading month in November, lol. But pretty good overall.

    I swore to myself I will not spend more than 50$ a month on books, lol. It sucks, but I gotta order a lot of mine from Amazon, because I live in a small town and there are barely any bookstores. And the bookstores that are here do not have what I'm looking for. Sometimes I'll find something worthwhile; but I am pretty particular with what I read (philosophy and classics) - and maybe that's more a negative than a positive, lol.

    Hoarding books is not a personality. Get a talent. Do something. I know that you know how being bland and papercut copy of a white girl is horrible. So do something different....
