The Girl I Left Behind Me - British Military March
Просмотров 4885 месяцев назад
The Girl I Left Behind", also known as "The Girl I Left Behind Me", is an English folk song dating back to the Elizabethan era. It is said to have been played when soldiers left for war or a naval vessel set sail. According to other sources the song originated in 1758 when English Admirals Hawke and Rodney were observing the French fleet. The first printed text of the song appeared in Dublin in...

Ratcliffe Highway - English Folk Song
Просмотров 29911 месяцев назад
In the nineteenth century Ratcliffe Highway was one of the toughest and [most] dangerous streets in East London. Running along the Lower and Upper Pool it was a place where sailor Jack could find all the excitement he required. Dives, dens, pimps and whores were ready to supply his needs and help him forget his last trip. Then, when his money was all gone, crimps (shanghai merchants) could alwa...

Best version! The yeller bellies of Lincolnshire are among the nicest people you'll encounter, and nothing beats Grimsby fish.
Beautiful! 'It was Merry England because it was Mary's England.' - G.K. Chesterton. Let us always remember that England is Mary's Dowry and will forever be so.

I remember the tune being used for an advert for Golden Wonder crisps back in the day😅. Lovely folk song
Lovely!
Is this strawhead?
Wrong lyrics, "with His coat so Grey"??? - With His 'Coat so Gay'. Such a pity - English Tradition and History.
Good evening David. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a bad time watching my video, I appreciate how disappointing it must have been. I think you’ll find that in the video the ‘r’ in ‘grey’ is very clearly pronounced. However it varies from ‘grey’ and ‘gay’ depending on which version of the song. I hope this clears things up !
Thank You for replying - I never had a "bad time" watching Your video, in fact I enjoyed it - I merely commented that the lyrics are wrong. My source is 'The Oxford Song Book' which was included in 'The National Curriculum' for schools in Great Britain from the early part of the 20th century until 1964. I have two copies, one published in 1948 and one published in 1962. They both say "with Your coat so gay" as We sang at school.
@@davidhorn6008 I appreciate your reply. I fully understand where you’re coming from. It seems when it comes to the older, more traditional versions of the song, the lyrics are ‘gay’ as you quoted. I’ll see if I can upload a different version with the correct lyrics in the next couple of days to right this. I’m glad you enjoyed the video, feel free to let me know if you have any more suggestions or feedback.
You'll probably know this, most do but some will not - at the time of writing this song the word 'gay' meant only - light hearted and carefree - the modern commonly accepted meaning of this word may be confusing to some!
Happy ve day 2024! (Until tomorrow)

Lovely and hilarious.
Whats the remix of this song. I cant find it
That’s soldiering! 😄
John Peel's coat was grey, as in the original song. John Peel had 14 children, I believe.

As a Welshman this does put a smile on my face.
I’ve visited Wales a few times in my childhood but not for a good few years now… I’ll probably travel down there at some point in the near future, I’m thinking during the summer. Any recommendations for good pubs and cool historical sites??
@@mr.briton365 well for historical sites I recommend castles... Wales has a lot of them. I unfortunately can't answer your question about pubs as the only one I've ever gone to is my local. One bit of advice. Wales is a beautiful place for the most part however I strongly recommend avoiding a place known as Pentyrch as you might not leave with all the organs you entered with.
@@WeDieStanding948 I’ll keep note to avoid Pentyrch. Sounds a bit like a few places I know here in Yorkshire haha. When I visit Wales I’ll probably make a video about the various Castles and history of the place. Been meaning to branch out into wider history videos for years lol. Which region would you say is best?
@@mr.briton365 best region would probably have to be either Monmouth or Caernafon they are what could be described as the "richer" parts of Wales.
@@mr.briton365 the best site in Monmouth would have to be the Nelson museum and for Caernarfon it would be Caernarfon castle.
Another excellent video Mr Briton!
I'm going to have this tune stuck in my head for the rest of the day... And that's a good thing.
Me too 🤣
