Wow, I'm sorry how badly people are misunderstanding you! It was great marketing for the book, but the reality of her situation was not as dire as she has later pretended it was. I fell for the same myth myself. While I understand people's concern that it's "not a competition" and "everyone has different struggles," I'm surprised no one seems to understand that you're not trying to have a discussion about "who had it worse" but about the problem of someone claiming an experience they did not have to market a book. It was disingenuous, dishonest, and a little gross. Rowling grew up middle class, had a tough time around her divorce (but had financial support from her family), and then rocketed to billionaire status. While I'm sure the period of time after the divorce was difficult for her and she is allowed to feel discomforted by it, she certainly wasn't experiencing the level of poverty that she has since claimed it to be. It's clear that her limited experience with her version of poverty colored her neoliberal view of the world and you can see it in the way she talks about poverty in her books. The prime example is the Weasleys who are consistently described to be "poor" but never seem to have any trouble actually affording their needs. Their poverty was only focused on not being able to afford expensive things, the newest things, and instead using hand-me-downs. That's as much as Rowling seems to be able to understand about being poor. It's about the aesthetics of poverty, not grounded in any sense of its reality. I think the reason people are getting upset is that the "rags-to-riches" story is comforting. Not only did she sell a book, but she sold a story about the author that feels good to believe. It can be difficult to reject. Ignore the haters, if they're choosing to misunderstand your video, I doubt a RUclips comment will change their mind. No disrespect, but I've read into this and JK went through a divorce from an abusive husband that ultimately ended up in her becoming a single mother. In her own words, she was "as poor as possible without being homeless," and getting government assistance to help raise her child on her own. It also says she worked on Harry Potter when she had the time, rather than that she purposely didn't work enough hours so she could spend most of her time on her book. She also lived in literal rat-infested apartments, lived with other family members, etc according to her. You're making some big claims and not providing sources to back up what you're saying. Again, no hate to you, but please link your sources because people will believe anything without fact-checking.

If you're comparing your own poverty situation to Rowling's and concluding she wasn't really poor living on the dole, then what would stop you from comparing someone fleeing Sudan to your situation and saying at least you live in relative safety, have a roof over your head and access to all kinds of services? Playing the poverty olympics is idiotic, and making it out that you have it worse than others even moreso. There are always people who have it even worse than you. There are always people around the world who would do anything to be your kind of poor.

Just another of the many, many reasons that the Percy Jackson series is better. They just show more respect for the characters and the audience than the Harry Potter books do.

I hope that they update this aspect of Thalia's shield so it isn't Medusa. I think because they were willing to update Medusa the character from beyond the book representation, the tv show writers would recognize the need to also change the shield. I'm not sure how they would do it, but if they are employed as PJO writers, they must be more creative than me to think of an alternative. It just feels incredibly uncomfortable to take the time to recognize Medusa as a survivor and then later reduce her to simply that.

I really expected more from this fandom. It's really disappointing the discord they are having about a child growing normally. Another thing is people can't for the love of god to separate a character from their actor, like percy is after all fictional but walker is a real human with real emotions and to make things worse he's still just 15, the age where you are so insecure about your own body and self and to worsen things, he gets to have the whole internet discussing those personal private things. It's sickening and i hope he doesn't get affected by all this because he doesn't deserve it. Honestly, no one does.

Harry: Dumbledore is dead, Snape is dead (Snape really didn't get redemption in my eyes but I guess Harry is sad), Harry's parents are still very dead (If you ever picked up a book you would know that in the Deathly Hallows once he learned about the Resurrection Stone he was hyper-focused on it so he could resurrect his parents, which shows he isn't just over his parent's death), Tonks and Lupin are dead (their kid is left an orphan), Black is still dead who was his last resort for family, Harry almost and technically DID die himself, many of his fellow students died, he probably still has flashbacks of the Horcrux Hunt, when the weight of the world was literally on his shoulders. If he messed up, everyone would have been killed by Voldemort. There is TONS of other stuff. Ron: Fred died, his mom and sister almost died, him and Hermione almost died from Nagini, he surely has trauma from wearing the Locket and getting lost and not being able to find Harry and Hermione and thinking all the while that Harry may like Hermione. A lot of what Ron has said to the Trio probably haunts him. The whole Peter Pettigrew incident surely still traumatizes him Hermione: She altered her parents memory, which probably still haunts her, even though she most likely reverted it. Her and Ron almost died from Nagini. She definitely has trauma from Bellatrix torturing and cutting her, and Fenrir Greyback's haunting remarks. She was under so much pressure during the Horcrux hunt, especially after Ron left. She was also wrong about the hallows which must have been hard, as it was a key part in Voldemort's death and had Harry fully listened to her, Voldemort may have succeeded. I know you just referenced them, but many other characters have trauma, like Xenophilius Lovegood, Ollivander, Neville, Mad-Eye Moody (ik he's dead, but from GoF to Deathly Hallows), Winky, all the Weasleys but especially George and Molly (Molly's biggest fear is her family dying), Ginny, etc Everything is not fine. His scar never hurt again because the horcrux in him died... You are just SO HIGHLY uneducated in the Harry Potter franchise it's disgusting that you would EVER make a video about it. I'm not defending JKR with this comment I hate her as much as the next person. One thing not many people realise is that JKR's first published book that people actually read was Harry Potter, she was inexperienced (in turn of being a not very nice person), whereas Rick Riordan had previously wrote a few adult books (crime I think but don't quote me on that) so he was able to bring a really grounded and realistic energy to his first series focused towards a child audience. Albeit both authors are similar ages, HP was written just under 10 years prior to PJO so Rick would have experienced more in life to help his understanding of trauma, gritty realism (idk if there is a proper term for this, I play DND and this is the phrase we use for very realistic campaigns), and the affect of having Godly beings that are real that you have to worry about. And with the difference in experience, I think that Rick was able to balance the mystical BS that is Greek Gods being real, and the realistic toll literal WARS would have on CHILD soldiers. JKR was caught up in trying to make everything magical, the only plot point I can really think of for why everything went back to normal post voldemort war, was that people who suffered immensely removed many memories that linked to the war (i don't mean Obliviate but that weird unnamed spell that people use to remove memories and store them in a pensive). What i've said here could be completely wrong, after all, I am only 15 and it's been a while since i've read HP so i may be wrong with spell effects but I thought i'd just give some extra information on what backgrounds both authors were writing from as experience and previous stories can have a big impact on what you write. I enjoy both PJO and HP, but I definitely prefer PJO. Wow I waffled a lot...
