Not-quite-annual wushu centre training extravaganza, August 2011, Quebec city. What we lacked in numbers we made up for in geographic diversity and enthusiasm, coming from Medicine Hat, Winnipeg, and Guelph for four days of rain free training.

MaGui bagua lion technique. Andrea shows some technique drills and some of the lion moves in the 88 routine, and Philippe and Andrea show partner and apps training. This is from last year when we were still at Cataraqui.

MaGui bagua, the kaizhang technique, starting out with some eagle walking on the lake. Andrea and Philippe show some ways of practising it. (You have to hold back when applying it, as you can see, you don't need to make comments about how the technique wasn't done hard or finished in the final bit.)

MaGui bagua partner training, June 2010. I managed to get the whole thing to play, but the quality went way down. Andrea and John, after a seminar in Guelph. Start with chuanzhang (with a little tricksiness towards the end on Andrea's side), then the single palm change (Andrea again adding a little extra), then the single hook (hmm, Andrea once again uses a trick John doesn't know yet). Andrea and John, in Guelph, June 2010. Sorry, the whole video didn't upload. It is supposed to have more in it. Start with chuanzhang (with a little tricksiness towards the end on Andrea's side), then the single palm change (Andrea again adding a little extra), then the single hook (hmm, Andrea once again uses a trick John doesn't know yet). Bagua works against an opponent who is stronger than ...

Andrea Falk doing the first two palm changes of the dragon form, MaGui bagua system. This was done back in October. Sorry we don't put up many videos. I realised that if I kept waiting to get it perfect then we'd never post anything. We always seem to be training in the dark, too, which makes video a bit tricky. Andrea Falk and Phlippe Plante . This develops the habit of rising, twisting, and going into the opponent when grabbed. It also brings qi to the forearms and helps develop thick forearms (especially if you do it for a long time). www.maguibagua.net

Crossing arms training to develop the habit of using the body during the attachment to the opponent. It is done with connection but not too heavy (for us). Sometimes you can fool around with grips while you do it. www.maguibagua.net

    I purchased Andrea Falk's Dictionary of Chinese Martial Arts. There are no words to describe it. An unbelievable work, and amazing what she did. I'm putting it to good use, I think it will always be on my desk and will never make it into the bookshelf

    really nice partner work Andrea and John :) one question, in similar exercises I've done in xingyiquan and other schools of baguazhang I was taught to twist the arm more, in xingyi as in zuanquan with fist or as coiling palm in bagua. This gives a stronger structure in my experience to the forward vector trying to coil/cut in. What is the reasoning of this straight pierce?

    I love how the man and the woman are doing 2 different methods. The man is coming forward, while the woman is coming forward from an angle. The difference in strategies shows a quite profound result. Just so there is no confusion about what I mean, the man's forward strategy does virtually nothing to the ladies centre, while the ladies angle strategy forces him off balance at virtually every step.

    @onemindonespirit also want to keep in mind that the techniques themselves (and how they are practiced) aim to develop, nourish and strengthen the tissues (tendons, muscles etc) so one can (later on down the line) move quickly and maintain power. Depending upon the level of the student, the season and the area of focus (power, technique, qi, blood shen) one will modify how bagua is practiced. Great question BTW

    @durkhrodchogori Thank you very much for the need to comment on a conversation started over 2 years ago--it was so very much needed. I'm not talking about wushu in any shape or form. You can move very slowly and SILL not be having any breaks and pauses in your form, unlike what we are seeing in this clip. In a word, it's crap and I highly doubt any legit master ever trained this way.

    Yo Andrea really nice work clean good representation and presentation. For all of the haters and know it all's out there (onemindnospirit) what you see on the outside is the obvious, its what's happening on the inside thats where the happenings are. All the fighting are cool but anyone can fight and it does not take a lifetime or a special technique to learn. If fighting is all you want to major in, in this life then what a waste. Very small spirit Mr one mind I hope thats not all you've got.

    You are correct with your first statement, partially, but that doesn't end the issue. Being double weighted is very much about what your own body is doing. Double weighted is double weighted, unless you believe that all of a sudden an opponent makes up for this within your own body. As for the second statement, if a car comes to a complete stop would you say that you are still going? No. To begin again you have to start to accelerate once more. Hence double weighted, hence, breaks and pauses.

  • @onemindonespirit
    @onemindonespirit 15 лет назад

    Notice that I never used the word "quickly" in my previous comment, nor did I even imply it. I'm talking about the dead still stops and pauses, regardless of how fast you are moving. In this clip, if you were going full speed, there would still be moments where you would be double weighted and with broken flow. Simply "feeling the body connection" doesn't mean that the kinetic energy is still moving. And again, there is the issue of multiple opponents. I doubt the masters trained this way.

    A question about this type of bagua (and others like it): If bagua is about dealing with multiple opponents, (which is the reality of most fights) how can moving this way with all of the dead still stops and pauses deal with more than one person? and how do all of the breaks and pauses not break the energy flow of the form?
