The 1984 and the 1960 USA Olympic teams were the most talented. But for me, the most talented USA Olympic team was supposed to be the 1968 team. Because of the civic rights movement, the backlash of the Vietnam War and preparing for the NBA draft, many of college top stars either boycotted or bypassed the tryouts. Noted absentees were: Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Pete Maravich, Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Calvin Murphy, Bob Lanier just to name a few.

I’ll put one more reason. Better Defense. If you watch USA vs Argentina it was difficult to defend Argentina (it even reached 16 pt lead). Arguably this shares space with #3 team chemistry (more time better defensive chemistry).

Fun fact- Argentina shot only 29% from 3 point range in the olympics prior to the semifinal vs USA. Another fun fact- Puerto Rico blew out USA very easily in the olympics for the easy victory. To make matters worse, Puerto Rico is not even a country.

It’s amazing how easily they won in 1984 with the guys they picked with the main reason being Jordan of course and Patrick Ewing, but imagine if they had Barkley , Stockton , and Karl Malone like they had on the Dream Team , it would’ve been close to what the Dream Team did . I know all those guys were young , but they were very good even at that time .

The competition is so much better. The other countries are greatly improved. They may all be NBA players, simply because they can't all play in the league, but they are all capable of playing in the NBA. America has to take the basketball program seriously if they want to stay at that 1 spot.

These guys are not hungry for gold medals. It’s really a competition for them to lose. There isn’t much to gain since they’re expected to win gold. Anything less is a failure. I suppose that is why it’s easy to say no. The format of the Olympics kind of helps less skilled teams that might get lucky. For example, you play best of 7 for the NBA championship. Imagine if Argentina had to beat USA 4 times out of 7.

Then there was Havlicek cut in 1960 when the rules said players on sponsored teams and military had guaranteed spots ...

I think Chicago bulls is the strongest team ever in basketball , why? Coz they won 6 championship in their era facing all NBA teams with no none NBA player, while in Olympic is consisted of NBA and not NBA player, this means NBA is more highly competitive basketball than the Olympic, no team in NBA now a days can imitate the 6 ring of Chicago bulls in own era and while the modern dream team is struggling in Olympic which are not all NBA players
