Lyrics: Fanny J. Crosby, author of at least 8,000 poems, and nearly an equal number of hymns.
Tune: W. Howard Doane, a composer of many songs, cantatas, and popular hymns.
This "catchy" tune, from 1868, is now long in the public domain, and has been borrowed for other sets of lyrics, including Jim Jardine's work, "Hear the Voice of Jesus Calling."

In 1893, during her summer vacation, Katharine Lee Bates visited 14,000-foot Pikes Peak, where she wrote "America the Beautiful." Joseph Lincoln Hall (1866-1930) graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote hundreds of tunes, as well as cantatas, oratorios, anthems, and later in life, dozens of hymns. This is one of his better-known tunes. Hmm thank you for the comment. Sometimes there is a fine line between not being boring with the music, and keeping appropriate reverence. I have heard it played by several orchestras, and I believe that you are right...it is usually played a little slower. I am going to do some timing of orchestral versions.
