The splinter booboo thing is ridiculous. When a 24 or 32 pounder ball smashes through a couple of feet of oak the splinters can be as big as your arm. They had enough energy to maim and kill. Mythbusters did a disservice to history with their pop gun and plywood experiment. There is a video somewhere on youtube where they fire a heavy ball through a real reproduction of a 2-3 foot thick solid oak side of a age of sail ship and the splinters thrown on the other side were terrifying. Love this tour but at times… 😤

A ship with one mast with a fore and aft rig is a schooner… Sure… if it lost 1 mast. Otherwise that would be a sloop or a cutter most commonly. But it could also be a lot of other types. Bermuda cat, proa, dhow etc. Also schooners can also be partially square rigged such as a topsail schooner.

It’s amazing to think these American boats were among the largest of submarines in WWII as well, if it couldn’t get cramped enough. I’ve been on HMS Alliance at Portsmouth, UK and the interior is probably about half the size of this fleet boat (or certainly looks it in comparison to this video). Can’t imagine how claustrophobic it might have felt at times.

Even 80 year old technology is something that is beyond the engineering realm of most of us. No way could most of us today design all the systems used on a submarine such as this. It took brilliant minds to do such.

My grandfather was in Okinawa in 1945, and I recently read his diary of his time there. One thing stood out to me...they ate a lot of ice cream and watched movies on the ship...it was not a sub.

I think these chips should be maintained to be actually usable. They could have disabled them so they couldn't go to sea without some servicing with parts that can't be easily to get! The reason I think that they should be usable if necessary in the event of an emergency! Yes, it may take some time to get them up and running, but it could be done! Yes, they could take these ships and refit them, but that can take a long time!

Visited Sweden a lot in the 90's, and yes, this is definitely one of the go-to sites, if just for the history lessons you will receive. However, not sure why Joshua doesn't know the real story (I was told this when I was there). But basically, Adolphus himself is to blame for the sinking, and this would explain why no one was found "culpable." Adolphus was so dead set on the ship riding high as the fleet flagship, that he didn't listen to the builders who insisted that the ship would do exactly what it did; they were insisting that they needed more weight in the keel to stabilize the ship, but Adolphus wouldn't have it because it wouldn't ride as high, and that arrogance is what resulted in the tragedy. Regarding the museum, a Swedish friend once quipped to me that "Sweden loves to revel in her failures."

After what happened during WWll there shouldn't be hardly anything on the water other than Aircraft Carriers and their support vessels. Battleship are just a drain on the taxpayers, and country. Obsolete and no longer needed. They are definitely some fat that needs trimmed off the military budget!!!

Awesome video! I probably will never tour USS North Carolina, though I love Naval history. I was aboard USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 during the Vietnam War for 2 deployments. Strauss rode shotgun for and fought along with USS Saint Paul CA-73, a WWII heavy cruiser on the gunline. A shipmate and I went aboard USS Saint Paul and asked if we could take a tour. The OOD asked us what rate we were. We told him that we were FTG's. He called Gun Plot an an FTG came up and gave a tour of the ship, including Gun Plot and the 8" guns. Awesome to be able to tour USS Saint Paul while the ship was still active. I also was able to tour USS Missouri and USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. I had been a Pearl Harbor sailor for years before. We manned the rails and hand saluted USS Arizona, the men entombed below and the memorial built above the ship every time we passed.
