hi rachel ❤ how did you like villette?? thinking about reading it, but unsure if i want to read the professor first; have you read the professor?? 👀🥸
Hi Gigi! 🤗 I liked it, but am unsure how to rate it … I talked about Villette a little in my recent book wrap up video. I haven’t read The Professor actually, but I own a copy.
I am impressed by your reading list, as always! I love that you tandem read with your daughter... what a fantastic idea 😃 I just finished my first book for GLN. I couldn't put it down, so hoping I might be able to read more than the three I earmarked 😄🤞 I need to find some "Lighthearted Gothic" categories... is that even possible?? 😆 "Gothic Lite"... "Joyful Gothic" 😂😂 Thanks for creating a playlist! Yet another a great idea, I will check it out 🍷
I’m so happy to hear you couldn’t put your book down! If I can think of some light hearted gothic, I’ll let you know. Yes, I had fun creating the playlist, and I’m in the midst of throwing together a classical one, also completely subjective, drawing from pieces I love.
You know what? Why don’t you check out Daphne Du Maurier? I already know you love the film version of Rebecca; have you read the book? Jamaica Inn is also considered gothic and I think some of her other works fit into the category.
@ Jamaica Inn is next on my list! I was thinking the same thing 😁😮
❤!!! 😊
I need to look at those 2 Annotated books. Thanks for the inspirations.
They’re lovely, but expensive! I had to hunt around.
So fun to watch back ❤❤
♥️♥️♥️
lol that creepy book cover covering your face. Yeah our categories need work but hey, you gotta start somewhere!
😂 I know … it IS creepy, noticed that too. Yeah man, our categories need work; forgot to include the Harrison Ford one, remember? 🤣
Such interesting books. Oh my those illustrated books look incredible! I’ve been wanting to make my tbr video all week but with the kids on half term and sleepovers and visitors I’ve had no time. Hopefully later today or tomorrow. So so excited to join in this year. What with reorganising my bookshelves last month and filming the bookcase series and then this reading challenge and most importantly the passion of you and Bailey for reading I feel like I’ve rediscovered my own reading passion and we haven’t even started yet! 🖤🖤
I’m about to watch your video! I know: I stress sometimes over falling behind on not just creating videos, but catching up with others’ as life gets very busy. I do have to remind myself it’s for fun. I’m so glad our book tag has helped to reignite your passion for reading and I can’t wait to watch your TBR 🤗♥️
I’ve got The Hacienda audiobook on hold at my library but there’s a five month wait, so I’ll listen to it in March! Tenebrae sounds intriguing. I’m also curious about the gothic western. I think I’ve read about two westerns in my life, which is maybe a bit strange seeing as I live on the prairies. Maybe I should read more. Branwell Brontë seems like someone who would drive me nuts if I knew him in real life, but I didn’t know Daphne du Maurier had written about him. Now I’m a little curious.
I haven’t read any westerns … that I can think of. I grew up with a grandmother who always had a western on the TV while she crocheted. And while it made for a cozy atmosphere I miss, we’d get into debates re: the horrible representation of the tribes. There are some great films though, although my favorites are considered ‘anti westerns’. I plan on reading Blood Meridian this year, which is supposed to be extremely graphic, but I can’t resist as the writing is said to be superb. From what I’ve heard of Branwell, yeah, I believe I share that sentiment. But a book solely on him, written by Daphne Du Maurier is irresistible. And maybe it will prove to be a reflective character study. Doesn’t the title just RING? ‘The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë’
@ it is an excellent title. And yes, if I try more westerns, I might try more modern ones.
Those books look interesting. I'm not sure if I'll have time to participate thus year. But im rooting for you! 😅
No worries, it’s just for fun! Thank you for watching and rooting for me 🤗♥️
Ooo I should do this! Loved seeing this how cool that he was in that deck!
I think you’d have a blast with this tag! 💗💗💗
I’ve read a couple of his most famous poems, and loved them, but for some reason I haven’t read anything else. Guess I need to get a book of Dylan Thomas poetry.
Oh I would love so much to hear what you think if you decide to explore more! Some of his poems can be difficult , but if you can wrap your head around the fact that he’s playing with syntax, that’s all you need. His father brought the children up with an ignorance of the Welsh language; They learned ‘proper English’ but Dylan was determined to write poetry in English which had a Welsh sound. It’s like music. Richard Burton on the other hand, who I spoke of, was also Welsh, and grew up in a coal mining household; His father shunned that sort of learning, but Richard, who didn’t know English, was taken under the wing of one of his professors, and became one of the greatest stage actors who spoke the English language (also a Scorpio, famously married to Elizabeth Taylor). They say he was buried with a copy of Dylan’s poems. I love that sort of thing.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission that’s so cool.
I have the Courtney Weber book on Hekate, and I also felt kinda meh about it. There were things I gleaned from it for sure, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. You might like Sorita D'este's books on Hekate for the most part. I love Khalil Gibran and have that copy of The Prophet. I wanted to get the Oracle deck with his artwork, and mistakenly bought the Rumi oracle (love Rumi, too). So glad I remembered that just now 😆 I love your passionate Jim Morrison reflections. "He will be mythologized." I think you're right 😊 How beautiful that others joined you on reading Moby Dick and how much that meant to you ❤ This was a treat to listen to! Thank you, Rachel 😊
Yeah, I feel the same way about the Courtney Weber book. I have that Sorita D’este book on my list! I don’t think I knew court the Khalil Gibran Oracle deck. I’ll have ti check it out! I don’t think I’m finished with Moby Dick although I read it. For one thing, I should do something with all these notes I took 😂 Yes, it was a meaningful experience for sure 💗💗💗
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Yes, it seems you have more journeys to take with Moby Dick! Which Sorita D'Este book is on your list? I have "Keys to the Crossroads" but will be getting "Liminal Rites" soon.
@@Calluna.V It’s the Liminal Rites one. Bailey recommended a book too, it’s here in the comments somewhere
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Yes, the Hekataeon is by Jack Grayle, unless there is another book with the same title. It is usually put out in limited edition hardcover runs & is way out of my price range (triple digits, last I looked). Through Miskatonic books.
@@Calluna.V I’m pretty sure that’s the one she’s talking about and it’s on my list, just checked, but didn’t realize it’s hard to find. Doesn’t surprise me though lol
I suddenly got cold on this rainy day, so am snuggling with the pup and thought it was the perfect time to watch this video! Believe it or not, I have never read any of Dylan Thomas's works 😮 I LOVE his poetry based on what you shared!! Thank you for sharing all these treasures with us. I just went to my favorite little bookshop a couple days ago and now I want to go back and look for some Dylan Thomas 😊 I want to read the novel he wrote, too. I especially love the book of artwork inspired by his poetry. The bird deck is beautiful! I like the artwork a lot. I adore that you infused your trimmed Thoth deck with his poetry...perfection! I always feel like the Thoth is poetry made visible. ✨❤️✨
Awww! Love this comment so much! Thank you for watching 🤗 I had no idea as I was filming this, that it was actually his birthday. I knew his birthday was the 27th, but for whatever reason, I thought yesterday was the 25th 😂 I was suddenly inspired… couldn’t get him out of my head, and sat to film this around 1am this morning, the 27th. Had no idea. His birthday. I hope you can find some Dylan Thomas at the book store. You can also find his poetry on RUclips. Richard Burton reading the poem Fern Hill is something I listen to constantly. I think you’ll like it. Let me know if you find it.
ruclips.net/video/2Z-ZuguSrQQ/видео.htmlsi=vIJZXuqOq4udrMKf
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Of course it was his birthday when you had been dreaming of him and then inspired to film the video 🥰 I will keep you posted for sure!
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Thank you!! I will check this out 🙏
Of course it was his birthday. This is why reading is a major part of my spirituality. I hope you enjoy the reading of Fern Hill 🖤❤
Oh I love this so much. The boathouse fascinates me…. Buildings often my strange way into obsessions. His life there has a part of my soul, so this was incredible! I am fascinated by Caitlin too . They had a huge Dylan Thomas exhibition at the arts centre in Aberystwyth and had the soundtrack of under milk wood playing and it was so amazing. Thoth and Dylan….oh my!!! Just the best Rachel ❤
Candy, this is one of the best comments I’ve ever read! I’m overjoyed to hear you’re a Dylan Thomas fan! I had no idea! I think you’re the first person I’ve talked to, who’s familiar, and that’s sort of crazy, but true. I would have loved to see that exhibit, and I’m also fascinated with Caitlin as well! This is so strange, but when I filmed this, it was a sudden inspiration at 12:30 am … started gathering materials. I was mistaken in thinking it was the 25th of October, when in reality, I was filming this at 1 am on October 27th (today) Dylan Thomas’s birthday! Happy Birthday Dylan!
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I love that synchronicity of Dylan’s birthday and isn’t it so nice to stand on similar ground with someone and just hug souls for a moment ❤️❤️
@@CandySoulAndSoil Yes! 🤗 🤗 🤗 I’m so glad I decided to share! How perfect, considering he means so much to you as well ❤❤❤
Oh my gosh! Three new videos from you! I can't wait to check these out soon. I am editing a video to post, as well. Kinda that season of being indoors more, perhaps! ❤
Yes! I was a bit worried about spamming, but I had to get them off my phone and there was a specific reason I posted the last one today. Mark was out of town, and my daughter busy with an art project all day, so I had quiet time. I also filmed my goth lit TBR. 🦇 Can’t wait to see what you have next! ♥️♥️♥️
Excited for this love your decks and videos
@@shelbygivens1648 Aww thank you! I hope you enjoy what I have to share.
I completely understand having an overwhelming amount of books to read! I got Camelia Elias’ Marseille book and by the time I was about 3-4 pages in, I ordered her playing cards one (which I haven’t read yet), because her voice is unlike anything I’ve read before, even if she might be annoyed at my sometimes disagreeing with her. One of these days, I want to read Don Juan and Childe Harold. I’ve only really read his shorter poems. I also found it interesting reading a gothic textbook this year that he sort of looked down on the genre as “low” despite inspiring a lot of it, and bordering on it himself sometimes. I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Prophet, but I’ve never read it. It’s definitely on my TBR though. I like weird modernist stuff but I’ll have to reread The Blind Owl. It’s so strange but beautiful, but also undefinable. I’m glad you love Moby Dick. The writing is just so beautiful, I can’t stand it. If I lived in NYC, I’d go see the Met do the opera this season. Have you heard of the book In the Heart of the Sea? It’s quite a good one about the story that inspired the book.
I almost bought her playing card book in the midst of reading it myself lol but I was like, “Rachel, Stooooopppp,” lol I need to read Don Juan in its entirety; these were excerpts (is it complete, actually? I can’t remember if he finished it) AND Childe Harold. Is it sad I can’t remember what I own? Gothic was looked down upon, and it’s one of the reasons I passed over so many books as a younger person. It was looked down upon because they sold like the cheap thrillers we have today, and I’ve read some works that WERE just silly 😂 But obviously, there are plenty of masterpieces as well. Byron is considered ‘the original Goth’ which I think is just … so cool 😎 lol! Thank you for introducing me to The Blind Owl. It’s so strange, and I’d never be able to explain to my mother why I find it beautiful lol Oh I was going to tell you, I listened to a bit of the opera (because I’d never heard of it) and I think I’m going to love it. Moby Dick IS so operatic. Yes, I think you might have been the first person to mention that book to me. Also: I didn’t know they made a film a few years ago? Or a decade ago, on The Heart of the Sea. I almost bought the book in the gift shop after the Moby Dick exhibit, but I ended up with that philosophy book instead.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission yeah the movie version of In the Heart of the Sea has been hollywoodized. I was hoping for something more in the vein of Apollo 13, but that didn’t happen, unfortunately.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission and I can’t actually finish some of the original gothic books because they’re too silly! I may try the monk sometime though.
@@NicoleACottageWitch I haven’t seen it. I may watch it eventually, but I’m not at all surprised by what you said lol
@@NicoleACottageWitch 😂 SO silly, I know. You may or may not remember what I said about The Monk in my goth wrap up from last year. It was definitely worth reading, but there was some silliness thrown in for the sake of an audience. I was genuinely shocked by it, so it was fun being shocked, but yeah woah, there’s one upsetting scene in particular near the end.
Interesting. I didn't know Witches of America was controversial. I read it when it came out and really enjoyed it! As you know, I like a good anthropological take on a craze.
There’s plenty of one and two star reviews. As I said, I really enjoyed it too, because it made me want to dig deeper.
I've heard great things about the Hekataeon if you're interested in a little more of an occult/structured take to Hekate.
That might be on my list? Let me check.
Nope, got it confused with something else; it’s now added. Thank you! 🤗
What a gorgeous selection of pip decks! Would you say it’s worth purchasing the Egyptian Tarot set for the book? I have a copy of just the cards and while I love the art on papyrus, I struggled reading with it, was curious if there is good information in the book. xx
@@danielaayers3449 if the set is still affordable, I’d say go for it. I haven’t read through it all yet, but the information on the majors is more detailed than the minors, and there’s some uniqueness in interpretation!
Rachel this was amazing to watch. I’d love to hear more about your thoughts of Moby-dick. I’m sorry there have been some tough moments for you. Thanks for the continued inspiration you bring ❤❤❤
Hi Candy 🤗 Thanks for watching! I think I’ll find a way to discuss Moby Dick some more once GothLitNovember is through. I took a ridiculous amount of notes so I should start with that! I was just thinking of you, because I filmed my #Collectionsmeetdecks video last night!! I had so much fun! ♥️♥️♥️
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission oh no can’t wait to watch all of the things Rachel. I’m about to film my goth lit video too ❤️
Can’t wait to see it!
Magnificent selection of decks, Rachel! Love it
💗 It was fun choosing my favorites!
Watching this video felt like I was sipping tea at a cozy table with you while you were showing your decks! I related to what you said regarding the Egyptian Tarot, how the artwork makes you feel like a young kid discovering Egypt for the first time. Your scent experience with the Tarot Droga is similar to my Tarot of Vampyres (it has a musty, earthy scent... what you would imagine ancient earth to smell like). I like how your trimmed Thoth looks with no borders... it really makes the art pop 😊❤✨
@@Calluna.V Yes, actually, the Egyptian tarot makes me think of you at times! That’s so cool your Tarot of Vampyres has an earthy scent; that totally suits the deck! Speaking of earth, I love the Knight of Pentacles in that deck. Thank you, I’m so pleased with myself for finally trimming it! 🤗♥️
Yes, congrats on trimming! It can be a journey 😅 Aw, glad to be associated with an ancient Egyptian tarot! Knight of Pentacles in the TOV...yesss! I think the knights are my favorite courts in that deck- they are all so badass 😂🗡️🦇

I am definitely going to participate in GothLitNovember this year, totally my thing and I have books already planned to read 🥰💖
Oh I’m delighted to hear, Sandra 🤗 I’m so excited to hear what you plan on reading!
The monk... man that story stuck with me since college. I'm not sure I will participate this year I just have a lot going on on my homestead but we shall see where I am when Nov comes ❤
I was totally blown away by it! No worries re: participating; I completely understand, and this year will be more challenging finding the time on my end too. Still, if you decide to join in, there’s no pressure to finish before the end of November ♥️
Can’t wait Rachel ❤

YAY!!!!

November is pretty awful, I agree. I have a couple of books I need to finish yet (Robinson Crusoe and HMS Surprise) and I have a favourite re-read next, so I'll have to see if I have time in November. My daughter is reading Frankenstein at school in the Philip Pullman stage adaptation, so she's on course😊. Must check out that annotated version. Your dress choice looks great on the video by the way😊.
It’s no pressure at all to participate even if you enjoy watching everyone’s VRs. I hope your daughter enjoys Frankenstein!

Yes I a want to get into Dracula this season too
You look hot BTW

Yes! I will. Remind me.
That puzzle is sick!!!
Which one? Lol I think I showed 3 if I remember correctly. Do you mean the Salem one?
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission yes!!! But they all are
This was fun to watch. You may have shown up on my feed because I watched another RUclips classical music enthusiast who, among other things, played a clip of Glenn Gould explaining why Mozart is uninspiring. It's really rather absurd since Gould seems to then go out of his way to play parts of his sonatas in the most boring way imaginable, as if that proved his point. Anyway, greetings from San Francisco !
Thank you for watching! Haha I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the Gould clip you’re describing. I love listening to him, even if I don’t always agree with him. Fascinating mind…
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Gould did seem to open many eyes and ears by de-romanticizing the way JS Bach could be played. I wonder if this influenced the move toward the use of ‘original instruments’ in any way. I can’t recall when that started. 50s/60s? You might know than I. Again, I enjoyed the musical perspective and insight in your post. Thanks!
I love his Bach interpretations! I’m not exactly sure, but I think it was during the 80s or 90s when period instrument recordings became popular? That’s a very good question regarding his influence!
I haven’t been getting notified of your uploads for like a month!!! What the heck Anyway this is very good! 💗💗💗
🤗 she did a nice job!
Fiiiiiiiiigaro…my top 10 (don’t count them-I cheated): •Rachmaninov’s piano concertos (Ashkenazy or Rubenstein) •Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture (Berliner Phil) •Mendellsohn’s The Hebrides (Berliner Phil) & violin concertos •Beethoven’s symphonies 5, 7 (Osmo Vänskä-I’ve probably spent more time looking for a version of this that I liked than any other piece of music and the Minnesota Orchestra plays the second movement perfectly), 9 •Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman (the James Levine version, probably) •Massenet’s Manon (Antonio Pappano) •Donizetti’s Lucia Di Lammermoor (the Jane Sutherland version because she’s my all-time favourite opera singer-her La Sonnammbula is stunning) •Mozart’s requiem (Berliner Phil, Herbert von Karajan-he also has a great Carmen with them) •Bach cello suites but only if Yo-Yo Ma plays them •Holst’s The Planets (Berliner Phil, is there a theme here?) •Orff’s Carmina Burana (London Symphony, Richard Hickox) •Liszt’s piano sonatas (Brendel) •Philip Glass’s Metamorphosis •Vivaldi’s violin concertos (Nigel Kennedy) & The Four Seasons •Ravel’s Tzigane (Sarah Chang, conducted by Placido Domingo-the entire Fire & Ice album is gorgeous) I’ll be listening to some Don Giovanni for the upcoming opera, so that’ll be fun too. I’ll have to listen to those Beethoven violin sonatas with Perlman and Ashkenazy.
Also, I definitely want to see a video of your favourite musical recordings sometime!
This is amazing. Thank you!!!!! I need to look up the Osmo Vänskä recordings! I think the James Levine Flying Dutchman was the one I was going to get next, that or Karl Böhm. I’m printing out your list of favorite recordings because I love this so much, and want to check out the recordings I haven’t listened to ❤️
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I’m limited to what’s on Spotify but I did get a couple books of suggested recordings this year so I have to explore those a bit and I always love seeing what you’re listening to for new ideas. 💜
Actually I should probably use Spotify. There’s always something new to be discovered with music.
This is amazing! So thankful you were able to record this 😊 I am taking "notes" (screenshots, truthfully) of your albums. Meanwhile, I haven't finished but the possessed phone story is wild 😂 How it sent random photos?! 😮 I never knew one could be haunted by their phone 😂 New worry unlocked 😂
😂 I’m so delighted you enjoyed my possessed phone story! I knew you would 😊 Yes! It would text people photos! And it wasn’t my daughter high jacking my phone, as that’s easy enough to explain. Once, it sent a strange photo of my leg, in a slightly suggestive pose while I was cooking. The photo was sent to my boyfriend and a guy friend of ours, and it included the caption ‘Very BR’. My boyfriend was like, “What does BR stand for? ‘Bad Rachel?’ 😂 it was so difficult explaining to our friend I didn’t do it! What’s so strange is the photo didn’t appear in the camera roll, and we don’t know how it was even taken. We experimented with scenarios later on, but it didn’t explain the mystery, because even if you take a photo through the texting portal, the photo will still show up in the camera roll. It was a phantom! My boyfriend was just as puzzled as I was. And the weather on that phone was always WRONG too! 😂
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Bad Rachel 😂👻
We STILL laugh about this 😂
You've done it again 😃. Loved this as a big classical fan. Most of my listening these days is radio with our national classical radio station (also includes quite a bit of jazz too at night). That's mainly because I liked to be surprised and introduced to music I wouldn't always, naturally turn to. Your video has lots of new ones too: the Tchaikovsky trio is new to me I think. I'm glad you gave a plug for the Mozart Quintets because I believe they are some of the best things he ever composed, but are seldom heard. I've seen 3 of his operas, but my absolute favourite was Marriage of Figaro in an icy Prague in the Christmas of 1997. It was truly a magical experience because it was performed in his opera house and where 2 of his operas were premiered. According to Wikipedia it's the only theatre left where he performed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estates_Theatre I was waiting for Bach to come up because it was worrying me that you might ignore him. As I get older, I find myself listening to more and more Bach. It used to be only for when I was marking or writing reports, i.e. in the background. I only have one Gould recording (Well Tempered Clavier). OK, I know he was controversial and he recorded them on a piano-forte rather than harpsichord or a more period keyboard, but it's a superb recording and very individual in a good way. If you want to share more on him, I would be all ears. I can also highly recommend the Bach Sonatas and Partitas. The recording with Isabelle Faust is probably the finest one now. I also have the Cello suites. Mine is the Tortellier, but I think a favourite one is quite personal. Wonderful. Just one thought to leave you with. I've come to realise that for me, the best Beethoven recordings should be ones where the playing and conducting is just on the right side of being slightly 'out of control.' Or at least, gives the impression of being on the edge of losing control. Thank you for a wonderful video again. I loved it all. More please.
The Mozart quintets are amazing! Exciting to hear you’re a fan! I’ve seen 3 of his operas too! But not in Europe. I’ve been to the Metropolitan Opera twice in NYC: Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro; AMAZING seats for Figaro, and it was everything I’d dreamed it could be. That opera house in Prague was featured in the film Amadeus was it not? Mozart loved Prague; he received a warm reception there, from what I’ve read. So jealous you’ve been there! 😂 Of course I wasn’t going to ignore Bach. I had a pile of albums which I put back on the shelf before filming because it was just too much! I have some Bach on my workout playlist 😂 I have that Gould recording of the Well Tempered Clavier you’re speaking of. Anyway, I had some Bach which I cut out of the video: E Power Biggs on the organ(toccatas, passacaglia and fugue in c minor ❤, and Perlman’s sonatas and partitas for violin. 😊
