I discovered a gas leak in my apartment the day I moved in. I was the only person who could smell it. Got the gas company to come out and check for the leak, and there was a small leak in my utility room that needed repairs.

Thank you to Fraser for the honor of speaking at this benefit, and for all your staff did for my kids in their young years. I truly can't say how life changing our experience at Fraser was. I rewatched this Fraser speech for the first time in a long time, and I hear how some of my words and phrases from 2011 are ableist. I'm still proud of this speech and it was one of the most incredible and most healing experiences of my life, and yet some of my phrases are wrong and problematic. For example, "Empowerment over autism" treats autism as something negative and something one needs to overcome, which is not true. I'm sorry I said them and I'm glad I know differently now. I also didn't mean to disparage teachers, but meant to criticize the system, which I'm sure was suffering from lack of support and funding. Stay well everyone. ♥️

[Video transcription] We work with kids typically starting around age three, [which] is the youngest, to age seven. They all have an autism diagnosis with possibility of other diagnoses as well. Every day we usually get in the building, we grab our laptops, do billing. We get emails on which clients we are going to have during the day from 9:00 a.m. to around 4:00 o'clock [p.m.] In the mornings, we greet our clients as they come into the building. We bring them into the classroom for all the groups that they're assigned to, and every day I work with two different clients usually. So I'll have one in the morning and then one in the afternoon and during the day, we just help them with different activities, whether it's snack time, lunch time, playing with the other kids in the room with group activities, helping them just be engaged with everyone and learning how to do different things just throughout the day. Sometimes clients need a lot more help with their needs, whether it be bathroom, or maybe they need help opening up a jar or a cup of water or something like that. So it's a lot of hand-over-hand help with the clients with the things that they need every day. One of the more challenging things when I first started here was definitely just learning how to communicate with different kids where some are non-verbal. Some may use PECS or some-you know-they just have their way of telling you what they want. Some kids, they may communicate things with maladaptive behaviors. Maybe they could be upset or they don't want to do something. And rather than screaming or grabbing you. We teach them like, "hey, we can talk about it this way." So learning how to do that was definitely hard at first. But you do learn, and it is really cool being able to know how like, "oh, I know what this kid is asking me," or "I know that if we present this, they're going to be able to tell this from there." It can be a little bit physically taxing on your body. You know, maybe when I first started, I didn't think it would be so physically involved, but we have to come 110% with our energy levels and meet our kiddos where they're at for their day just to keep them successful. And so I think coming with that energy and being prepared for the day is something super important. Every day we work as a team, and it's nice knowing that everyone around you is here to help, and I never feel like it's an issue going to ask for help. While there are some challenges that come with this job and position, I definitely think that the rewards outweigh any of those challenges. Their victories, big or small, means so much.

The lady who explained why he didn't answer the "vain" question is so knowledgeable about how autistic people think. She also understands how some autistic supports (teaching autistic people how to filter things) can be unhelpful to us as well or can get lost in translation (not answering a question that might make you look vain seems logical from an autistic's perspective). Thanks for the great video!

Julie-this is really inspiring. I had no idea you and your family were dealing with this. I have heard great things about Fraser and special needs kids over the years. Great to hear your son is improving. Nicely done on your speech.
