Audi 4.2 v8 Timing Belt, Front Clip, Water Pump, Thermostat

This video was shot to show what is necessary to get down to the timing belt, water pump & thermostat of an Audi 4.2 liter V8. The car is a 2002 Audi S6. This is also an example of horrible engineering by the Germans.

    I think you are a moron for your dumb statements. Make cars that can go as long as German cars, moron. Without squeaking, alright/!

    I agree they didn't have to engineer these cars to such extremes!!!

    At least the timing belt is in the front I have a 4.2 and the timing chain(s) are in the back whole engine out to fix a broken guide, clever.

    Thanks for you post... I did mine. it was a pain... You were a big help. I was well prepared w/ o-rings and extra bolts. like you I used some hylomar. You are right there no need for them to use the shallow allen bolts. You know the Pateon 4.2 engine. They use regular triple square bolts. Regular allen bolts ok but hex bolts not ok. Hex bolts are too big.

  • @dartarnaez8323
    @dartarnaez8323 5 лет назад

    Based on your experience, can replace the shallow allen bolts with the regular height allen bolts ?

    • @oboriginal1387
      @oboriginal1387 5 лет назад

      Absolutely. I changed 1 at the minimum. I see no reason why a low profile head would be needed ever. For sure they all don't need to be low profile in the case I'm wrong.

      @@oboriginal1387 Thanks for replying. What I am concerned about it the allen bolt underneath the stud and behind the coolant pipe. I am surprised you are able to remove the housing without removing the exhaust stud. How are you able to the job without removing the stud bolt? I have seen a lot of pics of owner welding allen wrenches to these bolts as well. I so scared and dread doing this job that I plan to doing it in 2 parts. 1 weekend to replace the stud bolt as well as buy a welder just in case......I have bought all the necessary parts including the oring you borrowed from the bufkin pipe as well as the orings for the alternator (including spares of all the bolts I am removing)

      @@dartarnaez8323 I haven't reviewed the video but I don't believe the exhaust stud interfered.

    • @oboriginal1387
      @oboriginal1387 5 лет назад

      These are 3 phase and though you will be able to power your home it will be very inefficient. Better suited for a commercial building as a backup generator.

      From what I remember, any v8 will have this issue. Check for an oil leak under the car. That's what started this fiasco.

I believe that its not providing adequate cooling to the trans .. is it possible (placement and fitting) to install an aftermarket trans cooler?

    The Germans did it for 4 reasons 1. they wanted to protect the Thermostat and keep it out of the elements which is why they go bad. 2. they make everything else easy to get to except the theromstat. 3. Germans dont want you to fix it yourself its an 85 thousand dollar car. they want you to come in to there shop so they can make money. 4. Germans think of everything except with electronics.

  • @pauleitel5048
    @pauleitel5048 9 лет назад

    Are you calling them horrible engineers for having to put the car in service position for the timing service? You can take off the whole front end in like 20 minutes and all the wiring and hoses are able to extend. I wouldn't call that horrible engineering. Not to mention this service only has to be performed about every 90k miles. Edit: I just worked on another one of these. I hate them. Especially the design of the oil cooler block on the D3 A8. I think they changed the design from the D2 so that you would be more inclined to pay Audi.

    They weren't idiots. They did it on purpose. In the early 90's Audi/VW began a corporate engineering objective to bring more and more service business to the dealership. They do things in the design, to prohibit owners and small businesses from performing service on the cars.
