The Shadehouse Gardener
Австралия
Добавлен 2 мар 2020
I currently have three shade houses, one for growing Paph. and Phrag. Lady Slipper Orchids, another large one that I grow veggies in hydroponically and one for growing Bromeliads,
They have been setup specifically to suit the growing conditions of each of the different types of plants we grow.
I will be posting Full HD and ULTRA HD (4K) videos of plant care, propagation techniques and de-flasking of orchids.
Also a series of videos throughout the year on the progress of the hydroponic veggies crops.

I explain and show you how I modify last year's Dutch Buckets to fit this year's summer hydroponics bench.
The summer hydroponics bench was modified to conform with our winter bench that proved to be quite a successful new layout for our winter cauliflow crop.

#orchids #orchidshow #orchidflower This was our first orchid show for the year and for a small club they put on quite a good show. There was lots of plants for sale, Cymbids, Slippers, Dendrobs and lots of Australian native orchid species. Georgie bought a couple of Cymbids. in flower, and I grabbed a couple of Paphs. in bud. All round, it was a lovely relaxing way to spend a couple of hours, l...

Hydroponic Lettuce Seed Germination
I still gotta make my own , I have the buckets and know how... Just need the time , lol
Awesome , I'm keeping all my fruit trees in pots for a few years until I move to more land.
Good idea, your fruit trees will produce much more fruit when they are planted directly into the soil.
I’m just
How often is the water pumping through the buckets? I'm stuffing around with a few different ways with mixed results
My temperatures are much lower than yours in Qld, so I'll discuss my set up first. I am currently running an 800 lt/hr aquarium pump on the winter veggies. I water three time a day at the moment, but if the temperature is a couple of degrees higher I pump four times. The pump runs for 15 minutes each time on an analogue timer. I dropped the size of the pump to the smaller one as I was using the larger one (2500 lt/hr) that I use for the 40 dutch ducket tomatoes, but it was over filling the 30 current buckets and the excess was running out on to the floor. So that required regular refilling of the reservoir. With your 30 degree days I would be pumping four or five times throughout the day and the growth would be spectacular. Warmth, sunlight and lots of feeding = fast growing crop. Let me know how you get on. Thanks for your comment.
@@theshadehousegardener3940 That makes sense. I have a new mini system setup for tomatoes and its connected to a solar pump so will go on continually during the day and off at night.. see any major issues with that?
@@paulstingrayGardening , that sounds good. If we had sun every day down here I would be using a solar setup for my pumps also. Just looked at you new solar setup and it looks pretty cool. Subscribed.
@@ScottiesClockWorld Thanks! Im still learning everything
Great video. I find if you use hot water or a heat gun on the pipe you don’t need silicone. One less step and less cost.
Yes, that will work also. Thanks for your comment.
Lovely , I plan on learning heaps this year and doing the same with the fruit and vegtables!
Excellent plan Paul. I will be uploading a video of our citrus trees soon. Thanks for your comment.
@@theshadehousegardener3940 Awesome my circus are only 8 months old ,I'm new to all this!

Looking forward to an update on your hydro cauliflower and broccoli seedlings
An update will be available in a couple of weeks. The temperature is quite cold at the moment, minus 1 to 11 degrees with little sunlight due to the heavy cloud cover. However, the plants are still growing relatively well. Tomorrow I will be uploading a short form video I shot yesterday. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for your comment.
@@theshadehousegardener3940 Thank-you very much for taking the time to respond to my post. right now, we are having our hottest temperatures of the summer 30C during the day and 15C at night so 11 C sounds pretty good, lol. Happy growing!
Does this orchid suppose to grow outdoor?
Yes, in a shade house in Australia
Beautiful 😍
Yes, lovely flowers and plenty of them this year.
That's a heap of spiders! lol I collected brows 15 years ago and lost track around 300 or so , no idea what I have anymore , some have taken over some have failed. Lovely Plants
Hi Paul, lots of spiders around down here at the moment.
I want to grow cauliflower,Just not sure if it's too warm up here in Brisbane to plant them yet.
Probably a bit warm up there at the moment, we are having 16-19 degree days down here in Victoria now.
@@ScottiesClockWorld fair enough , its still around 28-30 in the day time
Please they’re pronounced Kay Key not Key Key. Thank you for your videos
Not in Australia. Thanks for your comment.
@@ScottiesClockWorld really I apologize it’s just I’ve never heard them called Kiki’s 😉
@@Lokismom808 , not a problem. Different county/different pronounciation. Thanks for your comment.
very interesting. They do look really happy. Glad I found your channel. I have been experimenting fertilizing my orchids the same as my rose plant this year. Seeing as you grow non-orchids hydroponically and orchids you should know more than most what would work well. Would you ever consider fertilizing your orchids the same as for example a hydroponically grown cucumber. Would you use half the amount or even less? What are your thoughts on this if you don't mind, just from your experience. Thanks.
Yes, half strength fertilizer for three waterings then just water for the fourth. Thanks for your comment.
long term, will you just leave the original plant as is, and harvest keikis indefinitely?
I will split the plant up soon, it is very rootbound, but there are new growths coming along. Some of the old canes will be removed.
@@ScottiesClockWorld thanks
I really like your video cause it's the one I want and you made it really easy to understand. do you use an aerator in the feeder reservoir? if not, why not? I've heard some do not maybe because the water dripping into the reservoir may be enough? thanks for your help with this...take care....bob
Hi Bob, i don't use an aerator as the nutrient media flowing back into the reservoir stirs up the contents quite well. My pump moves 2500 lt per hour so there is a fair volume of liquid in motion there. If you use a pump that moves 1000 lt per hour or less, I would definitely use some aquarium aerator stones. Thanks for your comment.
@@ScottiesClockWorld hate to bother you again, but can you give me the make/model of your pump?
@@bbulliard , not a problem. Aqua One aquarium pump, 30W, 2500 lt/hr.
@@ScottiesClockWorld thanks
great video. it looks like your drip system may not make it to both plants?
Yep, just made it. Thanks for your comment.
Great looking plants. Nice work. Thanks for sharing your video. 👍 cucumber and tomatoes are looking yummy. 👌
Thanks for your comment, some of your mini tomato videos are great.
How do we water them? Spray? How many times?
I water one a week, daily when the temperature climbs over 40 degrees, once a fortnight during autumn/winter.
Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for your comment.
What component did you use? Are they white small pebbles, cocopeat and charcoal? Thank you.
@@tongduldulao2937, white pebbles are Perlite, cocopeat and fine orchid bark.
@@ScottiesClockWorld oh I see. 😊 thank you soooo much for your reply. It really helped me a lot planting my denrobiums. Wood charcoal is commonly used in Philippines in growing denrobiums and other orchids. Good luck to more orchids.
Now, I have learned another technic and new method. Thanks once again. Looking forward to your new videos for orchids. 👍 Good day.
What did you use for potting?
1/3 perlite, 1/3 coir, 1/3 fine orchid bark

This was helpful. Was hoping for a part 2 😢
I started this channel in March 2020 just before the Covid 19 lockdown started, and that was the end of that project. Now that things have settled down somewhat I am going to restart the channel. I will be posting new videos every Monday morning on some of the following subjects: potting and care of bromeliads, setting up a hydroponic system, growing hydroponic veggies and other gardening related videos. Thanks for your comment.
