Interesting to see a part of my home city that I used to fly those small Cessna's and Pipers over more than 40 years ago.
How far is Airport from the city ?
Look at a map of Sydney.The airport is at Botany Bay.The city (central Business district) is at Circular Quay, Port Jackson.
About 15 kilometres.
As international airports go, Sydney International is VERY close to Sydney city. It's the reason why some of Sydney's VERY inner central suburbs have airport noise complains, and it's the biggest reason why Sydney Airport has curfews - with no big jets landing between 11pm and 6am. Not sure of the exact distance - but at 3:25 in this video, you can see both Sydney's Central Business District and the airport on the screen at the same time. The CBD/City being in the bottom right of the screen, while the airport is on the top left.

Beautiful scenic video then oops, there is the landing gear. Write down that seat number & don't sit thee again. Could i ask how much QantasLink charged you for the fare? Thinking of travelling North from Sydney but regional domestic airfares are usually really expensive.
If you can’t afford it then don’t go.It cost money to run an airline & you tight asses want to travel for nothing.Hitch hike instead.
