    It is clear for every person with a bit of clear sense that AI will not REPLACE radiology , but more of a question is if the need of radiologist will decrease ! Cause if that happens, you will have more difficulties to find a place to work . Definitely for a radiologist who’s in work for over 20years this might not be a concern cause if this should happen he’ll be close to retire, but for young students who aren’t into the specialty yet this might be a thing they could think about .

    Ten years later... this lovely lady has found another nice job for already several years... Maybe you observe the many A.I. radiologists that are out there and are one of the few who check their results. This is what will happen to most white collar work. Where only brain function is necessary - especially with a lot standardized stuff and not too time-critical (especially not in real-time) - MachineLearning will have a HUGE impact and reduce workforce a lot. Its so clear - I wonder how you can miss it. Especially academic jobs with standardized parts in their jobs will only be able to keep up the workforce if there is (much!) more work to be done than today. This could compensate the impact of SelfLearningMachines. Radiologists will have a significant reduction they will face. Especially cause these people are not cheap. In the end we have capitalism. If money can be saved rather easy by replacing human beings with cheaper technology... it will be done. Other possibility: This (and other) developments will finally lead to enhance our economical model so this system serve the people... and not people serve this system. But I dont see good chances for this. The economical "science" is so deep in the past and still pure ideological ... and the capital owners seem to care even less about the rest of society than in the past. I dont see that our system will change. Will be a fun time if you like dystopian progress.

    I'm sorry, but the actual conversations are the only thing hard to replace. Why would an ai not be able to give a differential diagnosis with respective likelyhoods on a finding? Why would an ai not be able to give recommendations on the next steps? It's not like you are just randomly going at those things and just say what your heart tells you; there's an algorythm going on in your brain and that algorythm can absolutely be done by an ai - and probably more accurately if given enough training data. You also wouldn't even need an ai to do the recommendation-part. You could just do a simple decision tree of "if history contains X, Y and Z and finding L has a likelyhood of <P percent, then recommend this next step". I have been on internships on radiology stations and the only things i witnessed to be truly hard to replace, were the limited patient interactions, ultrasound and interdisciplinary conversations. I think you are all coping, radiology will be one of the first disciplines to be made redundant. If other specialities just have an ai integrated in their systems, that presents them with findings, likelyhoods and recommendations; then what is realistically left of a radiologists job?

    The gender gap in any area has been long since debunked. It is easily explained as there is no malice. Women are off work or out of the work force with children etc, much more often than men and data has shown that men put in much longer hours through the day and over a life time than their female counter parts, again probably related to women needing to be away more for family issues and child rearing. Like a very smart person once said, if there was malice in the work force with paying males and females, then in this case hospitals would hire all females and pay them less and save a lot of money. But of course it is not about that, it is about always having your hospital staffed fully. Women should never feel bad as everyone is compensated equally for equal work.

    Interesting. I did the opposite, hit the books super hard first year and then it compounded. I would study a couple hours a night, focusing on whatever rotation I was on, or about to me on. Doing that, I kind of cruised through the last three years tbh. Back then (2004-2007) we had to take call however after six months. The 'fear' of call was a great motivator (can't miss and ectopic, can't miss a PE etc etc). And we weren't overread by anyone, attendings or senior residents. Personally think that's a big loss...you need to develop cohones, the sooner the better.

    hello Yasha Gupta, iam radiologist from indonesia, i really excited with AI , and i think its imposible replace rdiologist, it maybe some time in the future better at one or more things but for everything of course it cant replace ours, we better than it. it same like autonom car like tesla or maybe google autonom car, it can savely drive but it never ever get car licence, becuse it not human, so i think it same case, even it can diagnose accurately the deseases it not human so it never get that license. and for the your closing statement, i hope many radiologist have same oppinion like you, that AI can assist our work, it really helpfull. reduce our burnout...and help many thing. Please suport AI for this, and never afraid we will lost our job because it.

    • @BoothTheGrey
      @BoothTheGrey 2 месяца назад

      This analogy is exactly wrong. Self-driving cars have issues cause they have constantly make decisions in real-time within a highly non-standardized environment. This is absolutely not the case in medical diagnosis. You have time and there is sooo much standardized that is not influenced by sudden events you cant predict at all. What will happen is that ALL radiologists will work with what Machine-Learning-Systems are diagnosing and observe it and will step in if there is a case that is too complex or too rare (non-standardized). And the systems will get better and better and better and better... and will diagnose the standard stuff faster and cheaper. In the end the amount of observation and step in by human will go down and down and down. Of course most jobs wont be completely canceled by MachineLearning. But they will replace A LOOOOOOOT human in all possible white collar working areas. Especially where only brain function of human is needed. What is much harder is creating robots that have to do complex behaviour in real time. But brain work that is not time critical... will be taken over more and more by machines.

    Lowest hanging fruit for AI to cut costs is diagnostic radiology. You guys deal with a digital medium for Christ sake. Procedures not so much. But you’re kidding yourself that radiology won’t be partially if not fully taken over in the next 2-3 decades. Just utter nonsense

  • @perceptions101
    @perceptions101 4 месяца назад

    Very well said I see people saying this sort of nonsense that radiologists are about to be replaced by AI. I keep thinking all of these things I have commented as such on occasion as well. As far as mid level staff in radiology goes, they actually have a program for just that. And you can become a Registered Radiologist Assistant through the ARRT but it makes no sense to do it. I want to say it is a masters degree with a whole lot of extra CEU’s so you can bake less than $40,000 a year. So most people don’t bother, I had considered it until I realized it was nothing like being a PA and if you want to go down that type of route it is far better to switch to a PA.

  • @MrCWoodhouse

    Nice presentation, Dr. Gupta. I was using an AI for helping me interpret mpMRI prostate. It was great. The company charges $25 per case fee to use it. Guess what? That is 50% of my reading fee, so the bean-counters said "No, you can't use it anymore, it's too expensive." All my 30 year career I have wanted a program to circle, measure, and characterize every potential pulmonary nodule. Seems simple enough, but nobody will implement it (liability fears=cost, I think). Maybe soon.

    Respectfully, I have been in Radiology / Pathology information systems for the last 15 years. Consulted for medical AI firms as well. Generative AI and Moore's law is unfortunately very real. If you now look at procedural and image generation via AI today, the exponentially of AI is very apparent. Inference is at a completely different level than it was say 3 years ago. I am very neutral with regards to replacing Human Radiologists, BUT, the effectiveness and accuracy and speed of diagnosis across all modalities will come faster than you expect.
