    I build aluminum cabs for firetrucks so I'm used to it's quirks and I've veen wanting to build a boat of my own. What kind of challenges did you run into with building this? How long did it take & whats the ballpark on material cost?

    • @FishKraft
      @FishKraft Месяц назад

      I went through a boat builder in Sitka. I think a fair amount of people who want to DYI their own boat use the Specmar designs. This one is a Specmar orca hull. As far as I’m aware you can pick some of pre made kits or design your own based on those kits. We did some modifying to one so the plans themselves cost $8k. The boat builder did complain a fair amount about their Specmar plans, as some modifications had to be made during the build. For example, the deck was raised up during the planning phase but the bulwarks didn’t get raised with it and had to be modified mid build. There’s quite of few other things I would have changed but no boat is perfect. If you really want to build one yourself (which I would think long and hard about), spend a lot of time in the planning and spec phase. Think about every detail and make sure the measurements are what you want. I would also think about the hull shape that you want for your intended purposes, as most Specmars are low angle deadrises (flat bottom)- mine is a 14 degree at the transom. All in $350k with trailer, motors, electronics, labor, etc. I would guess $250 plus/minus $25k doing it yourself. Took 6 months he had a team of 4-5.

    Love your videos! Are you mostly anchored when mooching or is it productive to drift / mooch?

    • @FishKraft
      @FishKraft 8 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Both are effective and have time/place. Mostly dependent on how windy it is to see if it’s drift able or not. But if fish are hitting only in particular spots it’s sometimes better to anchor on top of it vs trying to keep the boat there regardless of how windy it is.

I stay in a little closer as I only have a smaller boat right now. Looking to buy a bigger one if one comes for sale that I like though. Still had a pretty good summer in '23 though even with the little boat. Good luck on the up coming year.

      We more so look for depth, fishing the shelf. Usually 1800 ft is where we do best, sometimes it’s better a little deeper or a little shallower. Use smaller circle hooks (I use 13/0) with swivels as they spin like crazy on the way up.

    How deep do you guys anchor to get the black cod? seems like a pretty long line would be necessary for that. Greetings from Portland Oregon

    • @FishKraft
      @FishKraft Год назад

      We will anchor in 600-800 ft for halibut and catch bonus black cod and pacific cod. If ocean conditions are good (<10mph), we will drift at 1400-2400 ft of water with 2-3 electric reels. When we are drifting, we usually always have an outboard in reverse to back down-- using 3-4 lb of lead.

    • @eriks9576

    Awesome video captain. Are you guys bottom fishing at the same time your mooching salmon?

    • @FishKraft
      @FishKraft 2 года назад

      Hey Dane, thanks! We’re typically catching halibut while mooching on the mooching rods as we commonly hit bottom- fishing sandy and gravel flats for the salmon. Most of these we throw back as they are small but occasionally we catch a keeper size. When we go out for a traditional halibut fish, yes we will throw out a mooching rod and fish for salmon. Sometimes this works for Kings, but normally better for Silver salmon later in the season (July - September).

    Nice! You catch all of those species in the same spot?

    • @FishKraft
      @FishKraft 2 года назад

      We commonly catch salmon and halibut at the same spot while mooching. The halibut may not be the right size or big enough for some guests at some salmon spots, so we have change programs and specifically target halibut. Typically this means going out into deeper water. Black cod is found anywhere from 600-3000+ feet. We fish for halibut in the 600-700 ft depth occasionally, and sometimes we get lucky and catch black cod at that depth in the same spot. In 2021, it was very common to catch several black cod at that depth (600-700 ft). But that's not always the case. In general, that depth is the shallowest we can catch black cod.
