My grandfather was in 7th battalion the rifle brigade and before that the royal green jackets and the kings own rifle corps. Injured by a shrapnel injury on the eve of Cassino he could always still manage this and the quick march well into his 90s. He passed away last year and hearing this piece of music will forever remind me of him.

Can one of you boys (Rifles) let me know, why do you have to march so quickly? I heard it was because you were late for battle years ago, but not sure if there was any truth in that?
No. Rifle regiments were always at the front of an advance. Therefore speed was needed to get there and the pace you see here is the formalised drill version of jogging into battle ahead of the main force. The old (yawn) joke about being late for a battle is inter-Regt piss taking by red coat regiments. Rifle Regis such as 60th Rifles and 95th Rifles were also left behind as a delay screen while slow moving red coats got away safely. Rifle pace allowed the Green Jacket Rifles to leave quickly and catch up. Simples.
@@TheGreenjacketbilly An old family friend and Rifleman from the KRRC always joked that the 60th was the only regiment in the British Army allowed to chew gum on parade as they used be called the "60th Royal American Rifles".

@@GirlArmy21 think you're stretching it.....we've bailed most of Europe out of world wars, been a major factor in nearly all far asian conflicts, came up with the SAS, everyone followed with their own SF, been at the forefront of UN peacekeeping missions for many years.......YES we are the best
This is 'at the double' it is not the march. However as light infantry (skirmishers) they traveled very light so marched quicker than everyone else. C.F. The Royal green jackets (who are now part of the rifles ) perhaps typified by Sharpe and co i.e. very lightly loaded, fast moving, troops. The Gurkhas are also a light infantry brigade, so march at 140 paces a minute (at 15" step) rather than the 120 of 'normal' regiments (with an 18" pace),
The double past is easy as it is just a well controlled jog but you should try the quick march that is a real killer especially when it get ramped up on drill sessions. Finished life as a sapper but always proud to have completed basic training in Shrewsbury back in 73/4
It looks frikking cool...and the double march is killer...hum it to myself all the time. Imagine the Imperials as these lot dashed out from behind the squares and lines. Skirmishing is standard today but the LI were the first to really practice it...very cool.
Actually, back in the day of the Napoleonic wars, light infantry were sent ahead maybe 5-10 miles ahead of the rest of the army to scout and have skirmish battles.
Jealous because Para history only began in the 2nd world war ?? Wonder how much longer the Para regiment can avoid the defence cuts, Prince Charles won't be around for ever to protect it, neither will the regiment when he's gone. It won't be missed.

The reply was 10 days sir. They were told if you run you can do it in 5. So that's why today the run at the double.

Was in 3 RGJ ran alongside Marines and Paras and they just could not keep up. We were kept away from the Falklands for a reason.

Paras are to be cut to 1 Battalion serving on SFSG duty. Gone are the days of mass parachute drops, unfortunately. :(
