Why are Heavy Gauge Aluminum Boats so EXPENSIVE?!

We get questions all the time about heavy gauge aluminum boats. Many people ask: "Why are they so EXPENSIVE?" . The reality is that ALL boats are expensive. So also are many other things we buy regularly. . Look at pickup trucks. What used to be $25,000 is now $55,000 or $60,000. . The same is true with boats. . The question you need to ask is, "What kind of boat provides the best VALUE?" . In ...

Lovely ❤
Thank you for the tour. GREAT boat, would love to have more of these in Minnesota.
We would be happy to get you into one. We have a 2025 185 Luxor in stock now.
How much?
We have a current 2025 Thunder Jet 185 Luxor equipped very similar to the one in this video in our showroom now for $73k.
Cool boat. Is the fuel tank integrated into the bottom of the hull or is it a removable tank?
This boat does have an integrated tank. It is a 15gal tank.
Is the deck made from aluminum or marine ply? How much wood is on the boat?
The floor in these boat is a vinyl wrapped plywood. This is common material and method to give a good long lasting floor that is quieter, warmer and overall easier to live with than aluminum. The floor is also several panels that are easy to remove individually if you ever need to access tanks/hoses/wiring. The floor is the ONLY wood in these boats.
@ thanks for the update.
One piece of windshield would look much nicer.
I'm a little confused by your statement. The full framed heavy duty windshield is one of the defining characteristics on these boats. The weakest part of most traditional fishing boats is the windshield. The windshield on the Thunder Jets is so substantial you don't even really think about them. They are also nice and tall and easy to see through with very little obstruction from the frame work.
I really like what you are doing with your videos, you are showing us boats I never heard of before, I am referring to Heavy Gauge Boats. I want to get my first boat, but I wanted to get the right boat for where I fish. I live in GA, just above Atlanta and I fish the lakes that are north of Atlanta. So, I guess that is Bass fishing but I really don't like a Bass Boat because I can't use the boat for family fun too, so I found Lund Boats, but I quickly found out that they are expensive for someone who has never used a fishing boat before. I really liked the Thunder Jet boats, but even still that is about $80k. I like what the RH Boats have to offer and I feel like I can justify it because it gives me what I really want for fishing areas, and it might even allow me to get to do some offshore fishing too. Thanks for all your videos, they seem to help introduce me to boats I never would have heard of, or considered.
Thank you for the nice comment. We enjoy making these videos and wish we had time to do more. If you have any questions about any of the boats please let us know. Thanks!
Nice boats. Looks like you also sell Starcraft. I love those Starcraft riveted fishing boats. I'm running a Delta 188 DC Pro.
What’s the price for that boat
We sold this 2024 with a 90HP Mercury for $34,250. A 2025 would be a bit more as there there was a slight increase from the factory.
Room to fish 🎣
This is a great boat with a tremendous amount of space for an boat in the "18ft" class. We have another one arriving next week that will be available!
any videos on replacing the transom
We have not continued this project. Frankly we have been busy doing many other projects and haven't had the time to get back to this one...however, we do still have the boat and it is now completely stripped of all rotten wood and water logged foam. It is available as-is or we would be happy to continue the project for a buyer.
Real nice boat. I'm not the target audience. But would love to ride one.
Ya bottom thickness.125 you are not looking at heavy gauge aluminum boats.250 thickness bottom is just starting with the heavy gauge you guys are talking about popcans
Just to make sure things are clear...in defining what a heavy gauge boat is the industry uses 0.125 as the break point. Many, if not most boats in this market have 0.160 or 0.190 bottom thickness. Many do have or can optionally have 0.250 bottom but that is not the norm.
Babble babble babble! Thunder jet sound like it a different neighborhood than a lund
Babble babble babble!
I just bought a 20' long x 7' 4" wide Super heavy gauge Alaskan Salmon Boat & have have no clue what it weighs. What does the average aluminum 20 footer weigh, roughly?
The hand wash station is where you plumb your kicker tell tale warm water to squirt into so u always have warm water to clean and warm hands
Boats are increasingly falling out reach for the middle class.
that boat looks great and lots of fun
All this is doing is leap the door wide open for the Chinese to come in and put all these guys out of business
Overpriced just like auto dealers these boats are 200 % mark up let them rot on the lot
...ha ha...I wish we were making 200%! I'd be happy to show you actual numbers some day if you want to have a real conversation about costs and profits in the marine industry...ha ha...

If you mounted a trolling motor on the bow, where would the batteries go?
There is room under the front deck that can be used for batteries. You could get 2 in there for a 24V system.

is that canvas trailer/road rated, or is it popup once on the water, trailer down only?
We do not recommend trailering with the canvas up on this boat. Certainly, a short distance at slower speeds it may be ok, but certainly at higher speeds/freeway it would be best to take it down.
pretty sure the question wasn't answered.
I was hoping you'd explain why..........
Bla blah.
I own a RH boat and would suggest to never buy one love the layout but all the paint is failing and now finding tears in the hull along the welds on the inside hull supports and they say is not a warranty item I’d stay clear of them
with so many RH boats out there, and not a peep of these kinds of issues, wouldn't hurt to share some videos of it
What are these numbers updated for 2024?
Wow if mercury see's thats rigging for the engine they wont be happy :(
I didn't hear the full price on that lovey boat or top-speed it would do but a great video

The dumbest tag team of useless information. Zero facts, no reasons or justifications. Love it how they say with a straight face how the manufacturer allows them to set the MSRP to their market. Thats sales code for: on a $100K boat, they can INFLATE the MSRP to the sky, discount it 10K, use the term "sale", and make 40K+ profit. They should never be allowed to talk in front of a camera without wearing clown faces.
Wow. That is quite the comment. You know, if you don't like the video, no one forced you to watch it. Are you a competitor of ours? I'm not really sure what your motivation is. I wouldn't normally justify a comment like this with a response, you caught me in a rare mood....of course I am a clown....so I guess the jokes on you. You clearly took some of the points we made out of context. We do not and have never claimed to set MSRP. We can however, set our selling price. If you look at the MSRP for some brands they are inflated. If you look at Thunder Jet you will find that their MSRP is a number in line with the market competitors. We can sell under that MSRP. I sure wish we could make 40% profit as you seem to think we can. That just is not the reality for any boat dealer. If you are in the market for a heavy gauge boat, I actually encourage you to reach out and we can go over all the details of MSRP, selling price and compare those to any competitive brand. No clowning around. We are here to help if you actually want to engage in a conversation. Thanks.
😊
Hi Duane. Not sure where you got the info that this has a plastic tank. Most of the RH boats have aluminum welded tanks that the company builds in house. Let us know if we can help with any questions.
How much is this bought
We have this boat priced currently (1/31/24) with a Mercury 60HP Command Thrust Tiller and trailer for $29,250.
here is the boat for us, only three things ours would be different, no transom door, (don't need it), locking glove box, (need one), 15 hp kicker next to the main motor for trolling and backup in case of main motor problems.
We would be happy to get you the exact boat you are looking for. We can custom order it just the way you want it. Let us know if we can help. Thanks!

I'm out in CA near Sacramento-- we have been relentlessy researching what will be our boat . We have looked at all of them - RH, North River, Hewes. There is no Raider dealer around me but I really like those too. RH is quite a bit cheaper and much, much lighter than the NR in particular which may or may not be a good thing. We will be using the boat in big( well, big for CA haha) freshwater lakes, American/Sacramento River, the delta, SF Bay and coastally between Golden Gate and Bodega Bay where the water can be challenging. If the dealer guys on this page read this, i'd like to know where the weight savings come from- ? the guage of metal between RH and North River/Hewes is pretty much the same - are there less structural components in the RH vs NR/Hewes? I have looked at the 20' Coastal at the boat show last weekend. the Coastal w/200hp + 9.9 kicker would likely be the choice if we go w/RH. first couple things that concerned me about the RH upon initial inspection besides the obvious difference in weight-- there is no bulkhead on the driver or passenger sides where you are saying the trolling motor batteries and charger would be. The rep told me the lack of bulkhead also allows for legroom if you're sitting in driver or passenger seats. The coastal at the show also had that hatch/box in the bow. where does that box drain to? Also - the forward storage area in the very front of the bow -- we put a light in it and if a wave comes over the bow and water gets in there it drains out where that area is underneath your feet where there is no bulkhead - that doesn't seem right.. I understand it probably wouldn't happen very often but if this boat is in a big body of water or the bay/ocean, its not unreasonable to expect some water across the bow. Next -- it looked to me like the house/crank batteries in the aft compartments are not sealed apart from where the bilge water would be? in the NR /Hewes boats the batteries are in their own dry compartments. I would not want water to be anywhere near the wiring or the batteries back there. A similar size and similar equipped NR boat is about 20-25k more. Where is RH creating the savings? this is where the obvious weight difference is concerning to me.
Hi John. These are all very good questions. As a dealer we have looked at how many of the competitors build their boats and compared those to the boats we carry. When comparing various brands and the specs, you need to confirm they are using an apples to apples comparison. For the RH - Coastal 20, the very close comparison is to the Hewescraft 200 ProV ET. Dimensions are very close on these two boats. Hewescraft build their boats differently. If you look at the side of an RH you will notice two creases that run the full length. This add a huge amount of stiffness. This reduces the need for extensive internal bracing. They use the metal already there to the fullest extent and create a stiff structure. In addition to that, RH is proudly a no foam company. That is they don't need heavy, water absorbing foam to create a stiff rugged boat. Any boat over 20ft overall is not required to have flotation foam.
I'm breaking my response up a bit. North River as another builder of heavy gauge boats is a very different comparison. I would not put the RH Coastal in the same comparison with the NR SeaHawk 20'x8'. The North River has a deeper deadrise hull, aluminum floor and many other differences. North River is a higher end brand. They do have many reasons they are more expensive. North River is also a no foam company, but they also use thicker metal in the side of their boats and also having the deeper V forward certainly adds weight and cost. While the grade of aluminum used is also important not all of the manufacturers publish that info.
Regarding some of your technical questions on the RH boats and the configuration and so forth. The bow fish box/storage has drainage through a hose out the transom. The forward storage cubby shares its floor with the rest of the bow. Now, there are holes that would allow any substantial water entering that area into the bilge. This is not an abnormal design. Regarding the house and start batteries, yes they are located (as in most boats) in an area where the water on the deck of the boat would flow on its way to the bilge. The batteries are intended to sit in trays on the deck. In other boats (even those you mentioned) the compartments you think look dry are anything but and in some cases are recessed below floor level and actually creates a low spot for water to collect. In reality you can't have battery compartments sealed. Traditional batteries need to vent and all batteries really shouldn't be in a confined area. In thinking about various different set ups for batteries, I've seen more issues with boats that have small dedicated, sealed areas for batteries than those that don't. I really can't think of a boat that has an area where the batteries are truly dry. All of this is to say that RH Aluminum boats build boats that are well within the norms for the industry and does so with smart use of materials and design that allows them to sell at a price point that is quite a bit lower than the competition. RH Aluminum Boats are a value proposition. They provide a good balance of quality, design and cost.
@@northwater4991 Thank you guys for such a quick and thorough reply!!!! I'll be taking another look at the RH!
@@northwater4991 No hatches on the deck? no space underneath?
🥰😁👍
these boats making Lund go outta business for half the cost 😂 midwestern folks been scammed for too long yall need to get wid the program 😂
We compare these boats to many other brands often. We agree that the value they offer is very hard to beat.
Lots of open space! Where do they pack the foam in that hull?
If you notice, this boat has a welded platform on the transom. While this is a very nice added feature, it also make the boat over 20ft so therefore it does not need the dreaded foam to be added. Unlike many other brands of boats that need foam to create the stiffness and structural strength in their hulls, this boat has plenty of strength without it. Also, without the foam you won't need to worry about the inevitable water absorption, corrosion and floor rot associated with foam.
Awesome. Thanks for that info. I am aware that over 20’ there are very few rules, and I understand how the manufacturers might label it an “18V” indicating 18’ when the actual hull length is different. Thanks again!!
@@tomspontoons No Problem. Let us know if we can help with anything else.
I have the 17' version. The foam was inside sealed bags in bildge and on side gunnels. They also had it up front below front deck and injected inside the box stringers. Boat is a tank, drafts 6"-8" at rest. I've run a 25/40/60 on it and it gets on plane at 15-16 mph. I've run it in rivers next to fly fisherman and in lakes. It's a tiller and wet ride when it gets nasty. Have had 3 people in one side never felt tippy.
@@omieyouknowme Yes, on boats that are under 20ft overall the USCG does require foam. As I mentioned the 18ft boat has a welded swim platform/ladder on the back that officially makes it over 20ft.
What is the height of the boat to the top of the center console? Most 8' garage doors are around 7' 9" when opened. Will this style of boat fit?
Those are good questions. The top of the T-Top on this boat is 114" so you would need a 10' door for this configuration. To the top windshield is 8'1" HOWEVER, the windshield folds down. When folded you only need about 6' of clearance. You could easily get this boat into a garage with a 8ft door if you don't have the T-Top.
these heavy gauge boats makes a Lund, Crestliner, Alumacraft look like a baby…..😅😅😅
We agree. A true heavy gauge boat is typically a no frills fishing machine. It is built to last for decades and is a boat you won't have to worry about.
Nice boat.....no rod storage?
There are optional rod storage holders that can be added into the side trays of the boat. These are just the gripper style that hold the rods.
Not very impressive
Hi Dan. Thanks for watching. We know this boat isn’t for everyone. It is a pretty basic boat that serves some pretty basic purposes.
for 35k it is
love that style... perfect size boat...super nice on that new one with the door. Question I have because you can't see under the decking is are these boats closed-cell foamed like the Lunds? If not, do you think using foam for structural rigidity is important? I own a spray foam business, so that's why I'm asking. I think I know the answer is no they are not foamed under, but because of how welded they are, it may or may not be necessary. And I also am talking closed-cell waterproof foam. Not the open cell that would absorb water and moisture like a sponge...Just curious. I've watched a few video's now about how these are built. Super impressive boats...I see the value for sure. Can't believe they aren't as popular in the midwest like you'd see out West. Hope you do well at the upcoming boat show...You definitely have something to bring to the table and show at these shows.
so I did some research and I guess Hewescraft are sprayfoamed. not sure if this brand is or not.
