IFR Practice: RNAV Simulated Instrument Approach to Syracuse Airport
Просмотров 2952 года назад
Now that I've completed my private pilot training, I'm working on my IFR instrument rating. This is a practice GPS RNAV-Z approach to Runway 10 at Syracuse International Airport (KSYR) in Syracuse, NY. Foggles: amzn.to/3y21D7t The glasses I'm wearing (, known as "Foggles", prevent me from being able to see out the windows and eliminates any reference I have to the ground or horizon. This simula...
Night Landing Chaos in Syracuse NY 🛩️
Просмотров 5062 года назад
I ran into a little bit of chaos after my night landing at Syracuse Airport (KSYR) in Syracuse, NY. This flight was performed as my night cross-country (XC) training flight with my flight instructor (CFI) as I work towards my private pilot license (certificate) in my Piper Cherokee 180. The landing itself was on runway 28 at Syracuse Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, NY which is a dece...
The Death Spiral 🛩️
Просмотров 54 тыс.2 года назад
In aviation, a Death Spiral or Graveyard Spiral is a type of dangerous spiral dive entered accidentally by a pilot who is not trained or not proficient in flying in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). Graveyard spirals are most common at night or in poor weather conditions where no horizon exists to provide visual correction for misleading inner-ear cues. Graveyard spirals are the resul...

Just trying out a new camera view today during my solo practice flight and thought I'd share my view of my landing at Canandaigua Airport (KIUA) just outside of Rochester, NY. This flight was conducted with my club's Piper Cherokee 180 (PA-28-180) in my quest to obtain my private pilot license (certificate).

E magine the guy aimin' the thang at a buildin' when the dude opens his eyes. I wood knot put it past the ole geezer someday. That ole geezer ain't ta be trusted.
you should set up a vr 360 camera in the passenger seat. that would be amazing.
Pilot Tory is back and with a butter landing! 🛬
Just having some fun!
That wasn't a spiral stall at all😂😂😂😂
This is a blast from the past for me. My first 7 years of my 20year Air Force career was spent at Griffiss AFB, NY (from 1974 to 1983). I miss the sounds of B52s taking off and landing on base My husband was an Air Traffic Controller and i spent time in the control tower - the night sorties were amazing to watch. My favorite was the AF F106s taking off with full afterburners! I miss the military every day and Griffiss AFB holds a special place in my heart. When they decommissioned many AF bases i was truly sorry to see Griffiss get the sack! Ive got some truly interesting stories from Griffiss involving the base's main flying mission. Thank you for triggering my trip down memory lane.
😅
Bettle Dumb
Sounds like a supervisor got involved
You flew over my house lol
Piper Warriors > Cessnas
😂
Not sure what's going on, but looks like smooth flyin✌
Dude said contact tower on 118.3 then another dude said stay on the current frequency instead of changing it. 😅 talking to atc is the most confusing part of flying imo lol
Ah yes, the place where Woodstock 99 was held, with lots of damage being done to the whole area
I was stationed at the Griff in the 80’s, and took a ride back right after Woodstock 99. Everything seemed intact, from what I could see…
Remember : the elevator turns the airplane, that’s why we are told to get the wings level first, then pull.
JFK Jr's plane had gas tanks in each wing and one was heavier than the other so to maintain control he had to compensate for that condition. Am I right?
No. unless the imbalance was egregious, that wouldn't have anything to do with his crash. He went IFR when he wasn't qualified to do so. That killed him and a ton of others over the years. No Mystery. I flew over long island that night and it was dense haze and no moonlight. He got disoriented and crashed. It's not more complicated than that.
What is the mpg or kpl on your plane?
Hard to measure mpg because that varies depending on the weather. My fuel consumption is generally measured in gph (gallons per hour). My plane is about 10 gph with a 50 gallon tank which could get me anywhere from 675 NM to 875 NM depending on the weather. That's about 15 to 20 mpg, I suppose.
@@pilottory, I always thought planes had a super duper good MPG. Also, two things; What feul does it use? And that is a huge gas tank!
My plane uses 100-octane low lead (100LL) AVGAS.
Unusual attitudes? That’s a walk in the park. My CFI tried to break the plane in half!
Man, my CFI was flying some crazy stuff when I did recovery from unusual attitudes. After seeing how gentle this was I think he may have been trying to kill us.
were they a gold seal CFI at least lmao?
In Europe you need an instrument rating to fly at night. I think the same thing should apply here, but of course it doesn’t. A non instrument rated pilot should only be flying in day VFR, IMO.
Would have been nice to see some standard UPRT introduced such as upset recognition, unloading the elevator then continuing the recovery.
Gentle unusual attitudes. I have had some instructors feel like they're trying to do a barrel roll in a c172.
It's the slow coordinated turn that kills you. Your vestibular system gets adapted to the angular shift and you feel like being straight and level while you're not. Unusual attitude recovery is one thing, what he's showing here is illusions which may lead to a graveyard spiral in IIMC. So to all the people complaining about how shallow those turns were... you're not getting the point of this.
Yeah my instructor first instrument lesson gave me the leans real bad. Asked me to keep my eyes closed and level the wings with aileron which I did. Then told me to open my eyes… we were in a huge bank angle. And climbing. That was over 20 years ago but I still remember it clearly.
Bingo.
Your instructor looks like Adam West!
so awesome!
like your instructor said: beautiful smooth landing, Mr.C. .... :-)
Foggles: amzn.to/3y21D7t The glasses I'm wearing (, known as "Foggles", prevent me from being able to see out the windows and eliminates any reference I have to the ground or horizon. This simulates what it's like flying through clouds, which obscures your vision and eliminates ground and horizon references. While I'm wearing the goggles, all I can see is the instrument panel gauges in front of me and I'm not able to see out the windows until I take off the glasses a few seconds before landing. The "minimums", or decision altitude, for this particular approach, is 200 FT AGL (above ground level), so when I take off the foggles, I'm only 200 feet above the runway. These are the specific brand of foggles I wear while flying IFR instrument approach practice: amzn.to/3y21D7t
Are you effing me? CFI banked maybe 10 degrees while the student was heads down. My CFI did steep turns
I was gonna say, I feel like my CFI was doing everything possible to make me nauseous when we did unusual attitudes. lol
You guys are completely missing the point. It is the subtle spiral that kills you, because your sensory perception tell you the wrong thing! This instructor is doing it exactly right.
Awesome 📹 🎥 📻 📸 🎮 🕹
I came to see the "spiral of death".
This would be really disconcerting.
And where was the death spiral?
I wouldn't call any of these attitudes a death spiral, though they could lead to a death spiral (accelerating downward, inside wing partially or fully stalled, probably near or above "never exceed" speed). Level the wings, idle the throttle, reverse-side rudder, slowly pull back stick. This is different from spin recovery mainly because you must level the wings.
Thats a spin, sir. Spiral implied nonstalled wings
That would have to be the softest of unusual attitudes I have ever seen , I copped side slipping 90 degrees to the left then 90 degrees to the right once felt like I was coming over the top of a loop , power off stick right back, plane went berserk so put the stick neutral when I reckoned the aircraft was heading down hill just used normal spin recovery, I was in an aerobatic plane so had to demonstrate at least 10 spin revolution's as well , unusual attitudes are the best thing you can do to make Shure you become an old pilot I am now 78 😁😁😁
Ok then Top Gun . . .
haha i agree my instrument instructor would do wing overs set full up trim and 60 degree bank then pull power on a partial panel unusual attitude recovery
Congrats! You seem to be the exception to the rule of "there are old pilots and there are bold pilots..." :)
I’m curious what type or brand of goggles are you wearing? They look so much easier to use then those horrible frosted shop type goggles.
They are ASA Overcasters (amzn.to/3EWbs96), but to be honest, I don't like them. I've since replaced them with BLOCKALLS (amzn.to/3rRQqmD).
Throw the plane around go out straight and level and hand it back to the student and watch the show...^^
Death Spiral? Didn't see it. .
What’s your camera/audio setup for this?
oh oh .....
What is the protocol if you can't get it to work?
Squawk 7600 (radio failure), then I'd be looking for light gun signals from the airport tower to get cleared to land via light gun.... or I could've turned around and gone home to land carefully at my home airport, which is uncontrolled (no tower).
that's almost an oh s@#t moment...
Not a pilot, just asking. Don't you have small handheld radio as a backup solution?
I don't, but many pilots do. I'm sure I'll get one at some point soon.
Yet more inane bs from another oxygen thief.
That happened to me once. That's the first I realized the co-pilot's PTT doesn't activate the microphone plugged in on the pilot's side. I flew for a while with the headset plugged in on the right side.
Oof! That was my backup plan, but I wasn't looking forward to having to switch my headset cables!
Are you THE David Clark?
@@simonhughes-king yes he is the real DC confirmed
I'm at home depot right now if you need a new button. If I don't make it in time, just unscrew it and tap the wires like you're hotwiring an old Buick.
🤣 Perfect! Just toss it up high, and I'll grab it on the way by!
That's what happened to jfk Jr, he went into a death spiral
just awesome ....
🤩🤩💖💖
Oh my,…. I was having some serious anxiety with that radio chatter 😳 yikes! You handled that pressure very well. Kudos. 👍🛩
wow .. it really looks amazing at night from up there ... yah, got pretty busy down at KSYR ... but you did great ...
Yeah, amazing looking, but it also feels eerie, because you can't see any objects! 😳
Solid Tory. Well done and smooth as silk!
Thanks!! 😁
