Reading Capital in an Age of Climate Change with Matt Huber - Jan 8 2025
While there is a robust and exploding literature on capitalism as the root cause of climate change, few have systematically explored Karl Marx’s most important finished work - Volume 1 of Capital - to bring to light the climate repercussions of capital’s “laws of motion.” Volume 1 is of special importance to a Marxist climate politics given the centrality of production in causing climate change itself. Matt Huber highlights the relevance to the climate crisis of key concepts such as value, the hidden abode of production, surplus-value, the accumulation of capital, primitive accumulation, and the expropriation of the expropriators.

A conversation with Paul Reitter, translator of the new edition of Marx's 'Capital', volume I, and noted Marx scholar Michael Heinrich on the challenges of translating Marx for 21st century readers, the weaknesses and strengths of earlier translations, and the ways the new edition can help us understand Marx’s analyses of capital and value.
A Prime Competitor - Understanding Amazon's Market Power
Просмотров 1082 месяца назад
Stephen Maher and Scott Aquanno present an innovative analysis of Amazon’s market power, drawing on major themes from Marx’s Capital, volume 2. In a recent report prepared for Amazon Worker Solidarity, they challenge understandings of “monopoly” common in mainstream economics as well as among sections of the left. Amazon’s “bigness” and lack of a direct competitor would seem to suggest that it ...

We marked 10 years of the MEP on May 18, 2024, with a keynote talk by David McNally on “Marx and Colonialism: The End of Capital and the Beginning of a Journey.” The concluding chapter of Capital volume 1 tackles “the modern theory of colonization.” Yet Marx only half-delivers on the promise implied. Rather than present a full-fledged account of capitalist colonialism, he pivots back to Europe ...

Drawing especially on Black radical and anticolonial theories of fascism, the book m...

    Fascinating insight into left wing intelligentsia. I have been sceptical that Marxism was taught in higher education facilities, in spite of being aware of the success of the long march through the institutions. But this video shows it’s true. Imagine studying a book written 150 years ago and thinking its messages are relevant today! It is a great example of obviously intelligent people being stupid. Thanks for opening my eyes to the extent to which western societies have been indoctrinated by Marxist rhetoric. God help us.

    Want to thank Reitter for his translation. It has already found value pedagogically, and I'm sure many will use it going forward as a solid basis. Hope that vol 2 and 3 get the same treatment.

    Marx was a Satanic priest who vowed to send earth into the abyss, to destroy God and halt the motions of the stars in heaven. And just an overall nice guy. He cares so much about humanity. Has had excellent results. _"If you can't tell the difference between shit and tuna fish, don't eat at a French restaurant."_

    Can we give examples of workers who don't produce surplus value?

    • @simonhannah7219
      @simonhannah7219 Год назад

      Any worker who doesn't sell a commodity or provide a service - a poet who writes a poem is an unproductive worker, but if the poem is published in a book and sold then they become a productive worker. Anyone who does domestic labour (housewives/husbands) do not produce surplus value. Also arguably most public sector workers do not produce surplus for the capitalists they are provide a service and are paid for through taxation.

    I'm not trying to say this to annoy anyone. It is in good faith. Anarchocapitalism and voluntaryism are considered anti-state for the following reason and in the following sense. The right and wrong conduct, or the relationships that adhere to the ideology are decided on basis of NAP within the context of physical property (from property in ones ownsbody to scarce means acquired thourh homestead and trade). But there is no support for state in this ideology. No support of state means that noone is obliged to enforce the defense of property. Obligations are only local to individual contracts. When someone steals from you, you are not obliged to do anything against it and nobody else is obliged to do anything gainst it either unless they are bound by a contract to do so. If someone fails to follow their obligation, then they are in the same position as a thief. But who will punish this thief then? And so on ... In this sense, there is no default guarantor of anything. So social trust and relations play a big role. I thought that those things are just common sense and that the only point of contention between voluntaryists/ancaps and left anarchist who claim to be the true anarchists is whether there is a distinction between personal and private property.

    If we broadly accept the limits re climate and resources the ruling class rams down our throats daily, then if the labour movement don't pull their finger out and address these issues, the ruling class will have little choice but to instigate their authoritarian policies, which is already happening and could be considered the bedrock of scientific fascism.
