New York Times June 26, 2007 Sean Carroll on Evolution and the Science of Evo-Devo Video By: Erik Olsen for The New York Times Photography: Sean B.Carroll, PhD, Steve Paddock, H. William Detrich, PhD
1:01:22 Sean goes from fluffy cool scientist to bad ass cool scientist. Love ya Sean!
I'm all in with this.
09:01 "have ditched a way of life that has nurchured their ancestors for 500,000,000 million years." There is no way he can in sincerity and truth make this statement. He doesn't know. He is speculating that these ice fish had at one time red blood cells and the. Through time and random mutations lost the ability to produce the red blood cells. We can not know with full certainity what happened 5 minutes ago unless we witnessed it. He was not there nor was anyone else. Pure speculation and lies.
1:25 . . . In the late 1920's the whale stocks of the North Atlantic had been fished out . . . " Translation: In the late 1920's we'd killed so many whales in the North Atlantic there weren't enough left to make a profit.
Excellent
A good 10-15 minute lecture. A tedious one hour lecture. Repeating virtually every sentence 3 different ways.
Blahaha
Compsci Conference is goona be expansive this year with you all. I always wanted to get 2 nfl players to thorw balls over a conference and soeed test thrm with lazers too.
3:44 Wow, this whole story is spooky even taking into account Seth’s habitual tardiness.
Thay means late in italian
Watched all of it 1:01:50
At first I thought this was about stealing a fart. "The Fart Heist"
Pretty interesting topics in evolutionary biology .I do believe that SJG should be smiling from above, even without possessing any mutated violet opsin gene looking at you conferencing, further nodding in appreciation for your endeavours and your team collaborators evo devo prowess
This tinkering gene attitude reminds me of S.J.Gould's coexaption ideas
Y ahora yo tengo que estar Leyendo esto para una prueba de la escuela 😭
Seth is one of my favorite people ever. I'm late to the party, but I just ordered this book and I'm very excited to read it. What a great conversation!
This is such an amazing conversation
This is a great and really interesting discussion.
@JaredGriffiths2000 I noticed that evolution kept being brought up except when there was the discussion about vaccines. Didn’t evolution create these viruses and evolution gave us an immune system to fight these viruses. It was a good discussion.
Evolution: The science of bleeding masturbation, unlike the real HARD sciences of Physics and Chemistry. The C-UNTS working in evolutionary science are only after the fecking funding grants. That is about all the C-UNTS care
Again, another example of the decay of a system being called evolution. The icefish turned off a mechanism for making red blood cells. Let me know when you find a fish that CREATES a new system that MAKES red blood cells.
We need the next fortunate event of sperm and egg selection it would be humanity live saver
Totally awesome
this video sucks
this was a great documentary... how long it took to get to neptune.. and their reaction... amazing.
fantastic .. love the there is no god at the end ..just perfect.
Saw this movie last night. I was frustrated that the makers completely neglected to talk about Pioneer 10, which was the first probe to take photos of Jupiter. The documentary appeared to suggest that prior to the Voyager program, the only images we had of Jupiter and Saturn were shaky ones taken through a telescope.
Thanks youtube for waiting a year to show me this... damn
No cgi parts of Cenozoic Beasts
The two Sean Carrolls! Nice.
Thank you YT for suggesting this to me. Love the conversation.
all biology students love you so much Sean.....
Can someone advise which issue of the science magazine Seth referred to in this video.
It might have been page 32 of Science Today
RUclips algorithms.... I click on literally every video featuring Seth or Sean (both Sean Carrolls, actually), and they suggest this half a year after it got uploaded?
Same, happens to me all the time. The RUclips algorithm is awful. They usually suggest me videos I've already watched.
@@robinh4hope you're still alive robin. Been awhile
Two years for me. Geez-this was a great conversation.
Okay...then maybe look up the other cast and production crew who could use your enthusiasm
Great film.. Great mission..
Vger
neo-Darwinism runs on lucky accidents. Some argue that spontaneous genetic mutations conferring adaptive advantage have yet to be observed. That is disputable, but even the most ardent neo-Darwinist concedes that beneficially adaptive mutations are very, very rare and the vast majority of such mutations do not help in any way. So proof of evolution by natural selection of spontaneous mutations ought to be a profusion of wholly whacko, nonfunctional fossils. But those necessary, crazy fossils - ones which haven´t got a hope in heck of flying, swimming or crawling and which the theory demands - are not there. This is the last pattern to result from a mechanism where the only supervision of ´The Making of the Fittest´ comes after the accidents. Thus neo-Darwinism falls at the first hurdle.. It is falsified. (Not that it matters all that much; it´s just a harmless creation myth!)
Do you know how books work?
Should have kept all of the National Geographic volumes that came out with Voyager-related articles.
I have them all since 1888.
@@erikpreston1805 - We had from when they were launched......
I'm here.
I..I just can't stop staring at Seth's teeth. There's something there....
I always thought he had beautiful teeth too. One of my friends has teeth like his as well. I'm currently getting my teeth straightened, I've always been jealous of Seth MacFarlane and that friend of mine because of how good their teeth are.
Must work kinder
Dr. Sean this has particular relevance this year with the COVID vaccination debate. I am an atheist and the six tenants of belief you list matches perfectly with arguments of Christian apologists. And those who reject climate change and the next mass extinction. Thanks this is useful information and I am listening!

Very interesting... I just came across this video by chance. 😉

Loved you in the “What Darwin never knew” documentary on the machinery of DNA. This topic is so utterly fascinating.
