I just gor done watching fruits basket because I absolutely live horimiya and was trying to find an anime similar, and fruits basket kept popping up so I gave it a try, while I did really like it what shook me the most was the age gap between akito Kureno and Shigure and relising that when akito and either on of them got together akito was just a child while those two where late teens early 20s, like 6 or 8 years apart, so other then that being a major shock to me 💀 I did really like it, and thank you for this video

I kinda get why Akito was so mad at Shigure before the series started- he did sleep with her mom, whom she hates. Though that because Akito slept with the rooster guy (I can't remember his name, just that Uo likes him). Akito's mom did it because she was always jealous of her daughter- of the love Akito's father gave her, of the focus the servants put on Akito, etc.

Maomao is autistic coded. From the novel, volume 5: "Maomao wasn't any smarter than the average person, just a little more... dedicated. And when it came to emotion, that she actually had less of than most people. She felt sadness and happiness, anger and joy- less acutely than ordinary people, but they were there. But there other emotions that people allegedly possessed which Maomao still didn't understand." She's hyperfocused on poison and medicine, can't be bothered with things that don't interest her (she fails the first civil servant exam because of this). If she likes you, you're good. If she doesn't, 'go to hell' is her feelings and there's not much in between. Yeah, she's neurospicy af.

This show is so interesting from the perspective of a guy. This show is the only one I've seen that represents women as more than just a series of attributes. The story mostly takes place in women's spaces, and it is really cool to see a sort of mini society develop amongst all of these women (and eunuchs), people who are essentially seen as lesser than men. I find the exclusion of traditional male characters very refreshing.

Love this commentary on Shigure. I just finished watching this like yesterday and am still puzzling through it. Kureno is another interesting piece of this discussion I think. Although he was older than Akito, he was easier to read as a victim for us due to the way she treats him. Even when he was “free” from her he still felt completely trapped by her. I also am not clear on the age gap between them, but we know he is younger than Shigure. He’s been caught in this unbalanced relationship for so long and never really acknowledges the problems there - he says is all his choice. And since he’s never changed his thinking, he easily falls into a pretty unbalanced relationship with Uotani. The show paints is pretty positively, but to me it reads more as another example of how abuse trickles down, and trauma causes problems in cycles.
