Who is the fellow FAEMA rider chatting with Eddy Merckx at the start?
Try doing that on the "new" stupidly dangerous tubeless tire and rim combo. I strongly dislike the direction that pro cycling has taken. Why not have a homologated race for pros that utilize the much safer metal frames and rims. Tired of exploding rims and frames for the silliest of impacts.
Great vid George. Back when I was an ambitious cat 3/4 , 1987/91 would pay silly amounts for Velo Magazine which was written in French, so took French in college I owe my dual language skills to reading about Stephen Roche, Sean Kelly, Phil Anderson, Erik Van Der Leucker Pedro Delgado, Big Mig, and many others one day event phenoms who graced the pages of Velo Magazine. And, for major tours back then, say for the tour, you probably recall George either you could wait till Sunday to watch the week's summary of previous week's stages on cbs , maybe if you're lucky you'd catch the results 2 days late in the Los Angeles Time, SF Chronicle, or NY Times. Things changed coverage increased when Team 7-11 arrived, Greg Lemond had his run ( did you buy the John Tesch soundtrack, Yanni's Contributions also, to listen to on the rollers, or set your VHS for Sunday at 2pm, so you could rewatch the tour over and over again through the winter in a puddle of sweat! ) Scarcity was good, right?
Amazing how this is quite like the stunt his son did in this same race. Interesting how this works. We know complain about drafting motor bikes and cars. If you look at the old footage of races you wonder why nobody seemed to care about it back then. Of course the field of aero dynamics was not that evolved back then. We race on public roads with weather conditions that can change any second and we complain about fairness of the sport. I think you need to realise that if you want that kind of fairness in pro cycling you will need to go to the indoor track. You can never really control weather and other people. You can set up rules for distance etc, but enforcing it without technology is impossible and if that would happen I would stop watching it. Pro cycling is already a jury sport enough as it is, with all the problems along with that. Look at the use of the VAR in soccer. Now the discussion is about the technology and what it does to the psychology of the referee. There will always be debate in any jury sport. Sometimes we tend to forget that it is all a game to keep us busy, grow or entertain us.
I was there that day! Such nice memories. I was 16 and there with dad banging the boards and shouting Jopie Jopie! Joop did one of his famous slow attacks.
He was also my favorite rider. He was incredible for his age.
The two British boys were there as well. Joey and Malcolm.
How did Sean not win Amstell or Flanders? Or the worlds
In Amstel and Flanders he rarely had a teammate with him in the finale. 86 Flanders is the one that will always haunt though.
@@lovelyswims Flanders 86 was a bad one but strangely enough, Kelly in a few interviews, rates his failure to win Flanders '84 as his worst ride (because he failed to cover the winning Lammerts break). Worlds 89 was his other worst ride because he chose the wrong gear for the final sprint in the previous days training ride.
@@marks_sparks1 Yeah, 89 was cruel alright. We were there on Montagnole, huge crowds, a giant screen at the bottom of the hill, thousands watching the sprint together and nobody could believe Kelly didn't win.
Crafty perfection.
Inoubliable.
Un grand champion !

So, Zootemelk is 40 years old here. Impressive!
Wow. Very strong Field. Van Springel was Mr Bordeaux Paris. 600 km!!
This was typical weather back then for the spring classics.
Hinault as a sprinter? What a complete rider.
@@jonathandetroyat5937 but to beat Jan Raas in a sprint? That's very impressive.
Was he a brother to Fedor den Hartog?
No he wasn’t. And it was spelled Fedor den Hertog apparently
Gratuliere Rolf.Viel Power bis zum Schluss.
Thank you very much! Rooks, a very classy rider. I'd love to get my hands on one of the PDM Concorde bikes.
Thank you. I really like these videos.
I ❤️ these retro videos. Poor guys. Not the best weather. I think the big guy in the Willems jersey was Peter Post. Wasn't it?
Super gemacht Rolf.
Fuck you, Rolf, you cheat !
Bonjour.
Mooi hoor.
The last hurrah of Zoetemelk. He made the same move that made him world champion. It nearly worked.
One of the best wheel changes you will ever see....
Today, with all the ridiculous &^%$#@! New Age crap that change would have taken a week..........
Don't celebrate too early.

Looks like the motorcycle won.
My god... That motorbike in the sprint... Wtf!! Like father, like son
How did Maassen not get relegated here!
Jan raas and team Raleigh my heroes in the 80s when I'd just started cycling with Rotherham wheelers !
Slim
Kneet wins, thanks for sharing.
This race was bought, 100%. Commentator: this race is not bought, this race is not bought. Why would he say that if its not bought? Think about that, Mart Smeets was a lier. This race was bought from Armstrong, including nice show.
If the race was bought, why would a television commentator be aware of this? If I were to bribe someone in a race, the last person I would want to know about it would be the guy commentating on said race on television. Think about it.
Boogerd was a classy rider, and had a teammate in the break. Learn about cycling before spouting nonsense. Your gonna buy a race and win by like 1 inch?
Payback for Huez the year before.
If anyone has any idea where to find Sean Kelly's infamous quote to his wife about "the bike always comes first" on film, please do let me know! I think there are many many people who would like to find it too 🙂
I'm looking for the same!
Let the sprint roll please!!!! Why do you fucking cut!!!!!
Bedankt, Cedric!!!!
toen was wielrennen nog leuk
You know what funny? Joop looking at stem despite there no HR / Power monitor lol . . . .
