As a little girl, I joined ballet because it seemed like a dream to be a beautiful ballerina. My lower middle class parents scraped together enough for weekly lessons and gear. I did it for 4 years and then accidentally while playing outside, tore something in my foot that had to be in a cast for weeks. Only then did I dare tell my parents I wanted to stop with the ballet lessons. I was so ashamed because I wanted to not give up and make them proud. But I felt so bad during practice that I even called home sick to be picked up early a few times. It wasnt only the teacher; it was the entire social atmosphere. As someone who already got picked on everywhere else, this was too much. During the time my foot was in a cast, my first big recital was planned and I sat in the audience between my parents watching it, feeling so sad and inferior.

Why should pushing through pain with a smile be a good thing? That's literally the symptom of a depression.

ballerinas have so much mental strength its crazy how people neglect them as athletes 😭

I really liked ballet when I was little, I was incredibly good, once a teacher had the amazing idea of telling me: ‘You’re getting fat, eat less.’ I was like 6 years old and extremely shocked because I never even though about my weight ever(because I was already In my ideal weight), my mom had to get me out of the class and I cried for months. Please, teachers, stop it.

Teachers are usually strict and wrong for no reason. Everyone is doing just great and if you ignore them and keep going in their class as if they've never said anything then you will be the shining star!

My Russian ballet teacher told me that I land my tour jette like donkey. But it was 1970 & they demeaned kids a lot. Some could use a little demeaning today. You have worked hard to be so good & you should enjoy your dance forever!

My friend’s sister was a professional ballerina. I asked her if dancing on her toes was hard on her feet? She said her feet bled every day.

I was pulled out of ballet. I don't remember since I wasn't even 10 at the time but I was told by mom later that my instructor said I will never be the lead dancer cause my neck is too short. Way to give me a new insecurity that had never bothered me before... Also now that I'm older I wasn't built for ballet anyway. So glad I got out of there before more 'anatomical problems' arose
