First Time Climbing "Big Bad Wolf" in Red Rock Canyon
Просмотров 3492 месяца назад
I finally got a chance to hop on Big Bad Wolf in Red Rock Canyon. It's easy to see why this is such a classic! The last pitch is pretty confusing though, if you don't know it shares bolts with the adjacent route. But still got the flash! Also, pretty wild running into Alex Honnold at the top of the route! He had just soloed another route on the wall and was hanging out while waiting on some fri...

Granted, it's only a short 5.6, but I'm new to trad and this looked like a fun chance to use the only 3 pieces I currently own. If I was wrong, the route looked easy enough to finish anyway 😅 Route is "Uncle Grandfather" - 5.6 at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch

Trying To Onsite Everything At "Amusement Park" Before Dark

We decided to swing by Amusement Park at the end of our day in Red Rocks. With just a little bit of daylight left, I decided to try knocking out all of them as fast as possible. The wall has a bunch of short 5.7's that are perfect for running some chill laps on and made a fun challenge when time was short.

I always expect questionable rock quality at Robinson Bluff, but I was surprised to see just how much work had to go into holding this route together. It was still a fun, long, and pumpy route - but it felt pretty sketchy the entire way! #rockclimbing #leadclimbing #choss #limestoneclimbing

    Is it considered a send/flash if you are so far off route that you are onto the next climb?

    • @garoncooper
      @garoncooper 9 месяцев назад

      You must be referring to the one bolt that’s set off to the right side of the line bypassing a blank section before cutting back, on a wall with fairly closely established routes. I figure as long as my bolts are easily within reach then I’m on route, so yes, I’d call this a send/flash.

  • @brentedwards2606
    @brentedwards2606 9 месяцев назад

    Nice climb, what state is this in? Beware on those lower few bolts, you clipped backwards on a few and that could result in an unintended groundfall. IF, and that's a huge IF imo, if you did fall from that ledge you likely could would un-clipped yourself from the draw. Same result for the 2nd bolt but a longer fall. Stay safe so you can climb hard m8!

    • @garoncooper
      @garoncooper 9 месяцев назад

      This is in Illinois. And it's funny that the angle really does make some of those look back clipped at first. If you look later where I look down at them you can see they actually aren't. I'm solid at avoiding back clips, and my climbing partner and I are good at calling it out if it happens. But I appreciate you looking out for it! You definitely see it a lot online!

    How awesome! The rock looks solid. Is it sandstone? Very excited for your onsite. By the way, if there are projects without names, you can give them your own name, after you send them. They recently bolted a lime stone crag very close to my house, it but most of the climbs are sketchy and hard and the ones I can lead have very sharp edges and eat your skin like nothing. If you are around Elk Lake City, check the climbing crag here :-)

    • @garoncooper
      @garoncooper 10 месяцев назад

      Yeah! Really good quality sandstone! There are a few project routes here but I think they’re going at upper 13’s, so I likely won’t be getting any FA’s on those 😅 But I’m intrigued by the sound of your local crag!
