Effects of Working Memory Training on Math Development
Abstract: Evidence shows that working memory capacity is linked with fluid intelligence, school performance, and ADHD inattention. This presentation will delve into the evidence showing that working memory can be significantly enhanced through targeted training. The discussion will cover how such training not only enhances connectivity between key brain regions but also leads to a reduction in inattention symptoms. Moreover, it will explore the positive impact of working memory improvements on mathematical learning, while also addressing the notable variability in outcomes between individuals

Measuring mathematical skills in early childhood: A systematic review of the psychometric properties of early maths assessments and screeners. Abstract: Successful early mathematical development is vital to children’s later education, employment, and wellbeing outcomes. However, established measurement tools are infrequently used to, i) assess children’s mathematical skills and ii) identify chi...

A reading-free screening tool for the screening of dyslexia in monolinguals and minority language speakers: why rhythm matters. Abstract: Several studies suggested that musical and, especially, rhythmic skills could be reduced in children and adults with reading difficulties or diagnosed with developmental dyslexia. Although this link between music and reading has been explored (see Gordon et a...

Revisiting working memory fifty years after Baddeley and Hitch: A review of field-specific conceptualizations, use and misuse, and paths forward. Abstract: As educational and developmental psychologists who study the role of working memory in educational outcomes, we know the various assumptions made about definitions and measurements of this cognitive ability. Considering the popularity of the...

Going beyond the cognitivist framing in understanding bodily foundations of mathematical cognition. Abstract: Recent findings in cognitive neuroscience suggest that cognitive functions are not merely products of isolated functional modules; they are instead facilitated by distributed, transient, and dynamic networks. Furthermore, research on the bodily and evolutionary bases of cognition reveal...

Brain Basis of Language Development Abstract: There are comprehensive neuro-cognitive models of language processing in the adult brain, but we do not understand how language develops and what determines variability in skill. Our work attempts to determine the nature of specialization for phonology, semantics and syntax in the temporal and frontal cortices in 5- to 9-year-old children. We are te...

Place-value structure of the Arabic number notation is akey why math is difficult for a subgroup of people with dyscalculia Abstract: Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a math-specific learning difficulty that is believed to be a multi-cause condition. Former measurements found that typically developing adults and children process place-value number notations (such as the Arabic numbers) harder ...
