What is a "professional" race car driver and why the people you think are pros probably aren't.

Of course, there is so much racing out in the world that it's impossible to explain all of the different scenarios. All levels of motorsports have insanely talented people, and a surprising amount of what you think is "pro" racing is just the same thing you'd see at your local NASA or SCCA weekend event but with 10 times the money. There are some lucky and talented people that are skilled enoug...

    Very good video. You are not a 'Professional' until your PRIMARY INCOME comes from driving a racing car. Those people are very rare and it is a huge achievement to get there. I always have issue with people calling themselves a Pro when they are not earing their living from racing. If you get paid a little money you are a semi-pro and anything else you are an amateur. Does not sound as sexy but it is the truth.

    Great well explained video. Not enough people know this about our sport. A lot of smoke and mirrors. I like the point that a lot of drivers that pay their way are just as talented as the "pros". While it is true, a LOT of those you see on TV might be normal people operating on play money as their hobby, I think your POV is limiting to a lot of those in this industry, at every level no matter how public facing, who work hard to put food on the table doing this and are without a doubt professional drivers. These are coach/anchor drivers, drivers with sponsorships that don't get paid unless they provide marketable opportunities for the companies they represent (i.e. race, no way around it), and teams that use one "pro" car to promote their rental car. It's unfair to box these people as amateurs, because it is their job. Not a hobby. A professional is someone who does something for a living. A professional who races with and coaches an Am (who funds the team) is still a professional racecar driver because they are, in fact, racing a car and getting paid to do it. Heck, even "pay drivers" racing in the lower levels of the sport accept a salary off their funding and prize money based on results. No race organization or sanction that I know of is solvent enough to cover the costs of teams solely on winnings. "Factory" efforts are just marketing like every other company or individual investor that backs racers. By lumping any driver, no matter their talent or upbringing, in the box "amateur" because they accept their check from a source other than a manufacturer, or that they had more (or less) resources to get there than others, you eliminate a lot of talent at EVERY level of the sport and damage the sport. My $0.02.

    you should do a video on the path that those top level talent folks go through, how much it costs, and how more often than not the top, highest paid (NASCAR, F1, Indy) drivers had opportunities and funding that most people don't have access to. I.E. explain the costs to go from karting to F1 and how much each piece costs and the average sponsor package each team is actually able to secure.

      I'm the green E36 and I did not stall. There was never a green flag waved so I did not go. I was correct. The only flag flown in this clip is a yellow at the start stand (incorrectly) and a red/yellow at turn 1.

    • @TaylorGoesFast

      This is almost a trick question since you can't actually see the cause. The red and yellow is an "aborted start". These flags were displayed because there was an incident in the wave in front of us that would not allow our group to start.

    • @TaylorGoesFast

      Close. It is related to the starting procedure but you can't see the cause in this clip because it's actually due to something the class ahead did. A false start would not result in the race being halted.

      @@TaylorGoesFast "Not really"? Have you ever heard of a thing called the vortex of danger? I doubt it, even though it should be basic knowledge for anyone venturing on the track around other people. There are major flaws on your racecraft (which is ok to a certain extent), but instead of recognizing them and research and work on fixing it you chose the Senna route of coming out with a silly "explanation". A sign of the times I suppose.

    • @TaylorGoesFast
      @TaylorGoesFast Месяц назад

      @@StratosZeroK Yes, I'm fully aware. I am a competition school coach, certified instructor, and I have published several videos on this very topic which are used by various groups to teach drivers the rules of passing and how to do it safely. I spend a lot of my time guiding others on the rules of racing and specifically, passing. What you're missing here is that you can put your car somewhere risky if you have the ability to back out of it if the other person turns in. I was not in the "Vortex of danger" approaching the apex as the other driver could very clearly see me out of their window when they were turning in and if they didn't and they went for the apex, I had enough available grip and was slow enough to back out before there was an issue. I'd recommend you not be so condescending while you're regurgitating buzz words you've heard and check out of my videos on the rules of passing and the "Right to the line", specifically the section on "showing the nose" to understand what happened in that turn.

    The left foot tap on the brakes before a heavy braking zone does a couple things 1) gives the driver a chance to confirm their brakes still work normally a few hundred feet before the braking zone 2) "sets" the brake pads closer to the rotor for better pedal feel. This is especially important after going across rumble strips/curbs/gators that cause significant pad "knock back"

    Top left is new pavement 1:32.4 - This lap is very sloppy and should have been a 1:31 with ease, but I haven't had enough time on the new pavement to string it together yet. Bottom right is old pavement 1:34.4 Exactly a year apart. Same car, same driver. Rebuilt factory diff and thicker front ARB and some rebound adjustments on the shocks are the differences in set up. There is a 1:30 out there easily for a Spec3. The new pavement is worth 2 seconds easily. Turn 1 is almost 10 mph faster now and the octopus has a lot more grip on entry, mid, and exit.

  • @TaylorGoesFast
    @TaylorGoesFast 3 месяца назад

    A couple more notes to make clear 1) Normally I'd be well into 5th on the straight, but I was 6 ish mph slower this lap due to letting that car by on the last turn 2) That weird howling is my transmission 3) I also was experimenting with not shifting to 4th in turn 6 on this particular lap. I don't think that's the fastest way through there 4) Turn 1 was completely botched on this lap. I overslowed quite a bit and didn't even need to use that outside curbing like normal I did not string together a "perfect" lap at all over the weekend, or even get close.
