How about winding it the other way? Just the first rounds like you did in the beginning and then turn and wind it just around the small part

You could probably make something like this with cardboard or flat plastic from a constainer, without the clips on either side and just add a notch on one of the jutting out parts to catch the yarn during storage/ between colors

This would be good for those friend ship bracelets things. I forget what it’s called but I use yarn to make long straps for bags with specific designs. I think it would be helpful for something like that.
