Hi there! 👋 I'm Dayna, and love creating, collecting, and reading zines!
Zines are self-published, non-commercial #DIY publications, typically made using a copy machine. They can be about almost anything, and are a great way to express yourself and find community. On my channel, I'll be sharing some of my favorite zines with you, as well as glimpses at my own artistic process, tutorials, and more.
I also review zines over on Instagram (@zinereviews), host a monthly Zine Club IRL, help plan my city's annual zine fest, and teach workshops and programming. In short... zines have sorta taken over my life, but I wouldn't have it any other way! 💗
Zines, to me, are all about creativity and community. I'm always down to trade zines, and to make new pen-pal friends. If you're interested in trading zines or being pen-pals, send me a message at daynamoth@gmail.com and we can trade addresses... or just drop a letter in the mail to:

I loved the video. Congrats!!! Witch zines are awesome. I wish to have some on our zine library and maybe I could make a video like yours speaking about witch zines and similar subjects !!! Make more videos please :)
Thanks! Spiral House Shop is a great distro for witchy zines, if you do want to add some to yr library. And I'll hopefully have a new video out on Sunday... making videos is just one of hobby of mine amongst many, but I try to make as many vids as I can. :]
Thank you so much 🎉 Would you like to exchange own zines?
Yea, I'm always down for trades! Shoot me an email at daynamoth@protonmail.com 👍
Oooh this is so cool!! Thank you for including my zine and for your lovely words about it! I'm very honoured to be included among those awesome zines and zinesters, I'm gonna check out the ones I didn't know yet. It was also super interesting to hear more about your witchy views and experiences. Your HAG WITCH zine is such a treasure! By the way, I'm thinking about turning the "altar of the zine" drawing into a sticker. 🙂
You are so welcome! Thank you for making such rad zines - and omg I would be over the moon if you made zine altar stickers!!!
Yay new zine video~!!!
😸
I didnt know what a zine was but now I want to create some! Thank you for the detailed instructions!
Welcome to the world of zines! :]
This is fun, thanks for sharing. 🙌
You're welcome; I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I am late for the party, and bring algorithm food.
haha! No worries, and thank you for the tasty algorithm treat ;-)
I loved this video! It inspired me to make my own mini zines :)
Oh wow! thank you - I'm so glad it inspired you to make your own <3
Owww! Thank you for this amazing tutorial! I want to make a mini-zine and the template and explanation were pretty helpful 😍
You're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful; good luck on yr mini zine :-)
could you make a tutorial on how to make one and what to buy? i have no idea where to start😢
I have a few zine tutorials on my channel you might check out now, but I can def. add a video about first-time zinemaking to my "future video ideas" list. As for what to buy, you don't need any special tools - you can make a zine with just a piece of paper, a pen, and a pair of scissors! I have found, however, that the tools i use most often are: scissors, a gluestick, old magazines and books (to collage with), and access to a printer (to print off text for inside the zines, and to make copies of your complete zines.) The printer is obviously the most expensive tool, but you don't need to own one yourself. I recommend seeing if your local library offers free or inexpensive printing and copies, many do (in my town, you can print/copy up to 50 black and white pages for free a day with your library card!) I hope this helps!
how do you get that big typewriter font writing on the zine? do you have a special lettering tool?
The fonts in my witchy zine are just freeware I found online (fontsquirrel.com is a great resource!) The "catmothcrow" text is a little more complicated; I used an alphabet rubber stamp set to typeset the title, then scanned it into the computer, cleaned it up in Photoshop, and turned it into a scalable .svg in Illustrator. But I definitely don't do that every time I'm designing a zine... I've been using my "catmothcrow" graphic in zines, videos, and my website for YEARS now, so it's a bit of a special case!
i like the panda. i also learning to draw digitally so i can make comic zines. i love making stories. nice pun with bi-cycle.
Thanks - they started out as a sketchbook doodle! Good luck on your comix! ⭐
I'm sooooo late to this but so excited to see it! Oh my gosh. I love, love, love seeing all the goodness. Everything looks like so much fun. <3
I've read most of them, and they are so good and so fun! PS: Thank you for inspiring this series... you're the OG Zinetuber. 💖
@@catmothcrow Beautiful all around! And thank you! Hehe. OG Zinetuber made my day. 💜
I really enjoy these videos, love the zine community!
The zine community is the best community :-]
Thank you, I love this kind of videos 🎉 👀 🗞
Thank YOU for watching them!
As usual, thanks for sharing your zines!
You're very welcome, happy to do it!
I love this series. Thank you for sharing all these cool zines and spreading the love in the zine community. :)
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you like it.
These videos are my favorite! Great to see what's out there
I love getting to share these zines with y'all, so I'm glad you like 'em. :-]
My favourite zine channel 😄
Wow! Thank you so much - that means a lot. 💖
Keep it up!
Thanks 💖
Thanks for taking us with you! I love getting a glimpse of all the cool zinefests and seeing what they look like and how things are happening! I had sparkles in my eyes when you showed the SLC Punk zine, now I’ll have to watch it AGAIN and read that zine! One of my favorite scenes is Devon Sawa with his spiky green hair during his bad trip :D
You’re welcome; I’m so glad to have y’all join me virtually. And I’m also a sucker for zine fest vlogs, so it was fun to make my own. And YESSSS 🤩 I wish I could host a Zine-y Movie Night where we watch a movie and then check out some zines inspired by it (and then make our own fanzines?)
@@catmothcrow Wow a Zine-y Movie is a brilliant idea 🙀I hope you'll have the opportunity to make it one day!
Hey! What printer do you use?
It’s a brother mfc-7840w laser printer 👍
@@catmothcrow thanks so much!!
Very cool. I love the fungivore zine!
Me too! Heather makes the coolest mushroom zines 🍄
Thank you so much for sharing! I live in a rural part of Japan…and there seems to be no Zine scene at all… So it is really nice to see a bit of what is happening in other places!
Happy to share about my local zine scene. 💗 And I’ve always wanted to visit Japan. Even if there isn’t an existing zine scene around you, maybe you can build one?
@@catmothcrow I am figuring things out….Maybe one day….for now my students get an assignment to make a zine :) and I use the lesson to introduce the topic and show them my small collection (in bigger cities I was able to buy some japanese Zines and some I printed online).
That’s really cool! I’d feel lucky to have a zinester as a teacher 😊
@@catmothcrow grading is really hard though! I did found a zine about using zines for assignments though and getting a lot of good ideas from that!
Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome! Thanks for tuning in :-)
@@catmothcrow My pleasure 😊
I love all the details you add to these videos! the colorful filters and static add so much! not to mention all the helpful and inspiring information about zining.
Thanks! Adding the little details and textures is my favorite part of the editing process, so I'm glad it is appreciated.
this is the BEST zine layout tutorial!!! I'm so so glad I came across it! I organise Auckland Zinefest and we do free zine workshops too and help local zinemakers get ready for the zinefest market. But the biggest struggle is always knowing how to explain the pagination process and the necessity of it! Your video and references to programs and resources is immensley helpful! I will defs be sharing this with zinemakers in NZ! Love the up down method! Gonna use it for the future! Also thank you Nash for this great zine arranger! :~)
Thank you! As a fellow zine fest organizer, I'm so glad to know this video can be a resource for y'all and the zinesters down in Auckland.
glad to be finding all the zine-related stuff in my recommended! have learned about this medium not more than a year ago and have made a few ones already^^
I’m glad you ended up here! And that’s the thing about zines: once you start making them, you’ll never wanna stop 😊
Cool video!!! More music zine videos please, maybe I can send you my mini zine about noise music reviews in cassette tape ^_^ Keep the good work!!!
I really wanna make another music-themed zine video; I’m glad to hear other folks would like it. And I’d love to read your zine - sounds cool; here is a link to my zine submission guidelines: catmothcrow.com/zine-reviews/
@@catmothcrow Thank you and I will send you my zine next week ;)
OMG!!! So many zines and they are beautiful. I love this video... I want more. Keep showing us beautiful zines!!!
Thanks! More to come soon 😊
Great video - so many cool looking zines I want to check out now! Thanks for including my Trainwreck Book Club - hope you enjoy reading ☺️🚂📚
Thank you so much for sending it to me! I am enjoying it so much - I’m adding a LOT of new book titles to my reading list thanks to you! 😊
Loved the zine mail and Ruby is precious!!!
thanks!
More of this in the future please!
You've got it! 💖
I really liked this style of video :)
Thanks - I'll def. be doing more of them; they are so much easier to edit!
Oh, what a cute kitten! I'm a big Hole/Courtney fan too 🙂 Such great zines and a great way to find out about them! (I'm also curious about that "rabbit" box (?) on the left of the frame. 🙂)
The rabbit "box" is actually a little notebook that I bought off of Yesstyle; all of the text on the cover is absolutely nonsensical (like "magic shop exclusive coupon members expire and become invalid"?!) but the image of the little Peter Rabbit plush was too cute to pass up. 🙂
There are a LOT of Hole/Courtney references scattered through my Trainwreck Book Club zine... Hope fellow fans will enjoy it! @echozines
Ooo, I just received the trainwreck bookclub zine too! Loved watching this haul 🧡
Thanks! I am so excited to dive into "Trainwreck Bookclub" - it looks incredible!
I’ve only made three zines, and so I am brand new to this. I had no idea they could be so amazing!
💖💖💖
DAYNA!! You may have just made the most useful zine tutorial on this site 😍😍
Wow! Thank you - this literally made my day 💗
This video would've been VERY helpful a few months ago when I was trying to print a poetry collection of my fav author (her work's been on the public domain for decades, don't worry). I couldn't so I left the project on pause. After cracking my brain last week I finally came up with my own method for arranging the pages (it has 200 pages and I'll be making signatures, sewing them and bind them later). Your process was helpful, though, now I want to make my own zines to gift to friends when we make art exchanges 🤭
Ah! I’m sorry this video couldn’t be of help with the poem project - it sounds like a spectacular and massive project! Who is the poet? My interest is piqued.
@@catmothcrow I just see this reply! It's Sara Teasdale 💙
So much great advice!! Thank you for sharing! With my A5 (half-size?) zines, I fold the master copy a bit with the pages in the right order to see if I glued everything correctly but with A6 (quarter-size) zines on one sheet, it gets a bit more complicated so thank you for these tips! A tip for digital A5 / half-size pdf zines: if you use abode reader to print the zine, select "print as book" so the pages are printed automatically in the right order (first page next to last page, second-to-last-page next to second page etc).
You’re welcome and thank YOU for that tip! Going to pin this comment so other folks can find it. 💗
THIS IS SO HELPFUL!! i’ve mostly stuck to mini zines, in part bc i’ve found printing multiple pages and on both sides hard to wrap my head around. my first zine was a larger half page but i remember that i kept printing it wrong, even with a template ;w; def saving this video for future reference 🙏
I am so so glad it was helpful! Let me know if you have any other zine printing questions - always happy to lend a hand where I can.
oh my GOD that's genius!!!!!!! (up down method) I just recently made my first non-mini-zine!! It's a half-size perzine walking through a metaphorical garden of my life story where all the sections are delineated by what name I was using at the time! I'm selling them on kofi to save up for a transmasc summer camp!!! also, I just gotta say I love your zines, I can't wait to get my hands on some!
Thank you! And yr zine sounds incredible!! Would you want to trade zines?
This is a great idea! I'm pretty new to the Zine world but I love making them!
Thank you! I hope it is helpful as you make your zines 💗
🍿🥤 🤓
😎💗
I live in LFK and I LOVE that people have Dave inspired zines... Dave is top tier.
Dave is the very best 💗🐈 excited to table Paper Plains again this year!
I would love to buy this, if you're selling copies!
Oh wow! Thank you! I do, I have some for sell on my etsy: catmothcrowshop.etsy.com/
i made my first zine yesterday and im obsessed with them 🤍
Congrats on your first zine! That’s so rad. What’s it about?
This was a very fun and relaxing video. I watched while I was cutting out some of my own zines. Your really giving me a reason to get a tonner printer as I get more into zine making. Saving on ink would be nice.
Thank you - I'm glad we could make zines together, even if it was by proxy! 😜 And yes - I def. recommend checking out laser printers... toner is so much more affordable than ink.
oh my gosh I really need that collating video because I have SUCH a hard time conceptualizing how the pages are supposed to be arranged in something like a half or quarter zine and Especially how to print them (flip along long or short edge?). It is beyond confusing to me. but also! Thank you for another inspiring video!!! I love your channel so so much, your voice and attitude are so relaxing and your videos are exactly my speed to process, understand, and enjoy.
Thank you so much for the kind words 💗 And I feel ya! I’ve come up with a collating process that works really well for me and helps me visualize the page order setup… I hope that it’ll work for you too! Tentatively, that video is going to be up at the start of June (hopefully a lil earlier!)
I absolutely loved this!! I cant wait to get my own copy of hag witch someday (also this whole video made me super inspired so tyyyy)
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m so glad it was inspiring, and I’d love to see any zines you make.
