Thank you so much for the fascinating video! Most of the Jewish Kurds actually spoke Aramaic as their mother tongue, not Kurdish, like the Assyrian Christians (they did speak Kurdish but mostly to communicate with the local Muslim majority). Maybe not in Sulmaniyah but I personally studied the language of the Jews of Zakho, it's Aramaic. Did you also have information about this?
@noamto Thank you for your valuable information. In fact, in a place like Sulaymaniy, Jews were the host community. And they were native to the area. Historically, they belong to Israel, but this doesn't change the fact that they are also Kurdish and Kurdish are also their mother tongue. Both languages can be considered as their mother tongue. Looking back to the history of theirs prescene at a place like Kurdistan region in so called Iraq, they have been there for more than 2500 Years. It would be a great discrimination if we don't call them the native people of the area. But thank you so much for your information. I didn't know that, actually. I thought they spoke Hebrew instead of Aramic.

Thank you so much for your words and encouragement. This is a kind of history that is usually neglected ( or hidden) by the majority. Hopefully, this movie will be taken as an act of documentation and will be transcended to the next generations.

Kurds were very cruel to Jews. Because Jews were a very weakened and disenfranchised community. Everyone could harm them easily without being punished. My mother-in-law told me about their miserable life in Kurdistan. That's what gentiles want from us - to be persecuted and helpless. Anyway, I don't feel angry with Kurds or anyone else. We just want human beings to stop killing us. Anyway, Kurds have something in common with Jews. They were scattered among the nations. Kurdish people deserve their own state just like Jews

My family is from Qaradagh but I was born in Slemani. Whilst I do appreciate this piece, it is not a very balanced or accurate representation of history. In fact this is a woefully skewed take on actual history. Quite embarrassing in all honesty. The 'expulsion' of Jews from Iraq was not unilaterally the decision of the Iraqi's government. This is complete and utter fabrication. As highlighted by leading Iraqi jewish historians, Iraqi zionists with the help of their israeli enablers were actively working to coerce Iraqi Jewish community to leave for Israel. Yousef Basri being one arsonist zionist who bombed 3 Jewish synagogues in order to scare Jews to leave. The most deadly bombing carried out by Basri killed 4 Jews in a synagogue. He was provided with explosives by his handler who was based in Iran. The expropriation of property etc is akin to what happened to Armenians during the Armenian genocide, but the expulsion and deportation of jews from Iraq was done with the complete aiding and abetting of the new state of Israel. Whether they liked it or not, Iraqi Jews were identified with the zionist movement, even though most were not zionists. Iraq and Kurdistan was their homeland. Whilst in Slemani they lived in their own quarter, in the rest of Iraq they lived everywhere. The idea that Jews were not part of Iraqi public life is also an embarrassing take. The notion that all they did was work as goldsmiths or vendors is purely false. They actually contributed to all levels be it economic, financial, political as well as literary and education. If it wasn't for zionism having a territorial entity in the shape of Israel, Jews would still be in Slemani today. Jews played a part in the creation of modern day Iraq so their deportation being purely put down to the Iraqi government is most ironic, but in reality totally absurd.

I personally don't know what you want to say. Even you wrote the name of the city false ( Sulaymaniyah, not Slemani), and please try to be a little bit accademic or research oriented instead of expressing your personal ideas. We spent our efforts to document a little bit of the oral history and what happened there. If you can contribute to the film, we would appreciate your support. Otherwise, I am afraid such kind of comments will not be taken into consideration.

@@sores6762 The kurds were friends, until the Farhud. Iraqi authorities expelled jews from Kurdistan too, the goverment stole their properties. Some kurds collaborated with the expulsion.
do kurds in sulaymaniyah kirkuk e.g still have tribal relations? as in the dohuk area?
Some of the Kurds families have preserved their tribal relations to the moment.
I don’t know if this holds true for Kirkuk, but in Sulaymani, people who’s families are originally from the city (as in they came here during the early days of Baban rule or even later, but still here in the city for longer than 3 generations) don’t have tribal affiliation, but rather go by family names which are designated mostly by the profession of their family. So we group ourselves together by profession rather than by tribe. However in recent years that has changed with the migration of people from the villages and towns outside of Sulaymani into Sulaymani, so now you find many inhabitants of the city identifying themselves by the tribes of their village of origin or by the name of the village itself.

This is such a beautiful film and documentary. It’s beautiful and sad at the same time. I know that the Jewish Kurdish community in Israel is very vibrant. They kept their Kurdish culture especially food recipes, and music that is displayed especially during wedding.
Thank you so much dear Laurent for your words. You are totally right. The synagogue is still there but it is a mosque nowadays. You can visit and see the trace of the David Star and the direction of the hall which towerd Jerusalem.
