Gloucester Greyfriars; Early Tudor Friary Church
Просмотров 11521 день назад
Here's a bit of history of the site from the English Heritage website:- The Franciscan friary at Gloucester was founded in 1231, but in about 1518 a prominent local family, the Berkeleys of Berkeley Castle, paid for the church to be rebuilt in Perpendicular Gothic style. This incorporated the earlier church but only survived a short while as the friary was surrendered to the king in 1539 at the...

In Bristol there's a twice yearly 'Green Man Ultra' event (Once in the summer and once in the winter.) where people have the chance to run either the 30 mile or 45 mile route in under 24 hours. Ages ago my eldest niece and a friend attempted to walk the 45 mile route in under 24 hours. When she told me about it I decided I had to try to do it myself (If you haven't seen my video yet, here's the...

Better than Disneyland, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Transport Fever combined! Best yet: It's REAL!
This is in the same area I visited some 4 decades ago when I stayed with my brother who was doing medical research in Oxford. Im looking forward to returning soon and I'm glad to know about this old Saxon church as I have had an interest in the Anglo-Saxon history of the UK. I had no idea it was so close to Bath and Salisbury is just to the east a bit. We southeast actually.
I really love the old stuff,
nice one mate I'll have take the girlfriend to this one 🙂
We few subscribers are fortunate you put so much effort into your work. Breath-taking, as usual!
pretty little village - gets a lot of traffic .
Hello my friend, hope all is well, I'm still having troubles with car etc, I will be up to soon.
lovely weather for it!
Great job, Dave! I have fallen in love with Portesham. So, does the "Portes" part mean "Port"? I studied Old English a lifetime ago, so I couldn't make out what King Cnut (Knut?) wrote. Ne'erthalees, I thank ye for yer woik. (Pretty bad, I know.)
Hi there nice little wander around Portesham I think you will find That the Actor Martin Clunes used to live in the old Vicarage in Portesham ? Thinks hes up over the top bridport way now
Interesting to see the Purton Hulks up close. I’ve never explored that far down the canal despite growing up in and around Gloucester and rowing on the canal.
Terrifying. L
Just a bit lol
I heard that this house was the groundsmans cottage for Llangaren house when it was a private residance, which is now Gracewell nursing home. It was also used as an office when The Old Manor was there.
Thank you for that bit of info :)
@@westcountryexplorer no worries
A TIGHT FIT DAVE, LOL
Just a bit of a tight fit lol. Like trying to fit into my clothes after Christmas holidays lol
nope - I could not get in there in a million years.....fascinating though.
It's certainly not for everyone, exploring tunnels like that :)
Nice one mate 👍
Thank you chief :)
"I'll get a train home now, guy's" ....... Smelling like a hairy sewer rat. 😄
What rot
The priory or my videos? 😁
9 Springs should be a not miss.
I am going to get to 9 springs at some point 👍
It is a magnificent place indeed :) I'd definitely like to go back there again one day.
Oh rich people are so interesting how can I learn to be rich
If you learn how to be rich, let me know; I could do with being rich too lol 👍😆
so the farmer not filled it in then? Last I seen start of this year was piles of mug outside the brick building
Both times I've been there, there's been crap piled part way up the entrance into the building but that's it. Easy enough to get into the building & that dreaded ladder 😆
@@westcountryexplorer thanks and ye everyone I go down that ladder I wonder if it will ever just collapse
@@HauntedTheTruth That would be a somewhat interesting experience, the ladder collapsing whilst being used.
You ok Dave, Glad you saved your data and photos, videos etc, Be safe
I'm okay :) :) :) T'is just my phone that almost came a cropper
One of those days, huh?
It has been a little bit lol. Touch wood, my phone is okay though there were a few minutes about an hour ago when I thought it had died completely. It is behaving itself for the most part :)
is it easy to access? is it allowed to be visit to the public or do you have to sneak in?
It is very easy to access; it's right next to a public footpath and there's nothing to stop you going to it. It is private property so public aren't officially allowed to visit but many people do visit it anyway
I grew up in Yeovil, my home town in the 80s and 90#, in fact I had some great e endings in the ski place bar - especially watching World Cup 1990, it was packed. Yeovil was a fantastic town then, great bars and clubs. Fantastic shopping, no shops closed.. I moved abroad and returned to Yeovil a couple of years ago. It made me so sad to see it now. It is just falling apart. I still love it because it's my home town but sadly it's beyond repair now.
I used to make the occasional visit to Yeovil about 20 odd year ago; it wasn't too too shabby back then. Nowadays it does unfortunately live up to its nickname of Yobvil. I can't see it being rescued; at least, not any time soon
Was eating healthy at malbo in one❤😂🎉
Just subscribed to your channel. Going to binge watch. Thank you.
Thank you for subscribing 😊 You've got a nice variety of vids to choose from 😊
A trip that provides a new experience for those who have just seen it. Beautiful and interesting Gloucester-Sharpness Canal view, which is an awesome panorama. Thank you for sharing it with us. 👍❤👍
It certainly is a beautiful and interesting canal 😊 It was a pleasure sharing it with you 👍
This has been the worst year for weather......I'm a bit of a fair weather gardener and I keep waiting to get out there and do what needs to be done. Good Luck with your travels, looks like such good fun.
Aye, was good fun indeed revisiting the canal. I try not to let the weather stop me from getting out & about and having a good time :)
Who was Gordon Bennet ?
"Gordon Bennet " is an expression of disgust or surprise. Difficult to say who he was as there have been so many.
Well, I found this: Where did the phrase Gordon Bennett come from? The Gordon Bennett Cup was being held in County Kildare, Ireland in 1903. With an influx of wealthy foreign patrons, the local restaurant, bar and café owners could smell money in the air and put their prices up significantly, to which the locals exclaimed 'Gordon Bennett'. He was also an intrepid adventurer.
@@jeanhopman5659 I'd read on good old wikipedia (Not sure how reliable wiki is.) that the expressions thought to derive from the controversial reputation of James Gordon Bennet Jr (1841-1918).
@melsmith2887 I suspect it's safe to say no one will know for sure who the expression "Gordon Bennet" is based on.
Good video Dave 👍
Thank you Paul 😊 T'was good fun
bizarre how they've built into the friary with modern structures.
Yeah, I found that bizarre too; very strange indeed
Just get me a time slip for the winning lotto numbers and a time slip back.
They'd be good timeslips 😊
Hi! Peter Laws here, from the Frightful channel. I'm considering doing a RUclips video on Wookey Hole and wondered if it might be possible to feature some of your footage in the video. I would of course offer full credit both on screen and in the video description. I'd also include a link to your channel, and this video, to drive more traffic your way. If you're interested, let me know. But no worries if not. Thanks!
Hiya Peter. Aye, I'm happy for you to use whatever footage you like from the video. I haven't got any of the original footage still (I tend to delete it once my videos are up on RUclips.); not being much of a tech head, will you be able to blag what footage you want from my RUclips vid?
@@westcountryexplorerfantastic! And yes, I can get what I need from this RUclips page. I’ll let you know when it’s live. Should be this weekend. I will credit you. Many thanks.
@@westcountryexplorerjust realised I replied from my personal RUclips account, but rest assured this is still Peter from Frightful. Thankyou!
@@revpeterlaws Ah, the joys of commenting from the wrong account; done that a few times myself lol
good you got a torch to show it off, good video Dave.
I felt it needed showing off with a torch 😁
@@westcountryexplorer Dave I'm planning on a day visit to you, to cover some stuff with you, Let me know when you're off next week
you lead such an interesting life :) Good luck eith the weather - it's set to get colder.
I guess I do lol. It's certainly a busy life at times 😂. I don't mind the weather getting colder, so long as it stays dry
Wow I'm surprised the taps are left on the bath 😂😂
I was a bit surprised too to see them still there lol
Good stuff and you have a new sub 👍
Thank you; and thank you for subbing 😊
Thank you for a very sensitive video of where my great grandparents are buried....
My pleasure. It's a very special place to visit I think.
I have received Holy Communion in this church at a weekday service while on holiday.
I'm somewhat envious. I'd love to attend a service there, especially a communion service
You and birds Dave 😂, Made me chuckle.
Very brave of me, spending a night in one of those bird boxes considering my feelings towards them 😂😂😂
Steak and Ale pie
Good call 👍 I did go for the pie 😁
Hey Dave, Sorry, I am watching now, Benn so bust with work and sorting other things, Hope you're well my friend.
I'm keeping well ta 😊 The joys of being busy, I know them well lol. Hope you're keeping well too
Maybe steak club, a classic 8oz sirloin steak ????????????????????????
Nope :) Been a little while since I've had a steak. Not sure I'd trust spoons to do a good steak; too easy for them to ruin it lol. I tend to go for something from the classic pub section; a dish they can't go too wrong with lol (Maybe a bit of a clue there :).)
Always a great walk-Well done ⭐⭐
Aye :) We're very blessed to have walks in such beautiful countryside on our doorstep :)
Can’t believe you went back, well done for giving it another go. Brilliant to see apart from those rather large spiders 😊
I couldn't resist going back and attempting to explore further; it was bugging me that I didn't get very far at all last time lol. Those spiders didn't bother me personally; they would have done if they'd been tarantulas or something like that.
If you ever head back to Cornish border mate we can give you a tour of the mines/ adits
I'll definitely be back down your way at some point; I'll let you know when I am heading that way as I'll always enjoy a tour of mines/audits :) I do want to get down to Mawnan Smith again, do another video on the owlman
@@westcountryexplorer yeah that story intrigued me as a child, never been there myself
@@maffersnshazzasbigadventur9135 It certainly is an interesting story; not sure if I believe it but that doesn't stop it being interesting :) I went down there April last year and camped out over night; that was good fun
Hi Dave, I hope you are well. Where is Walditch? 🤔
All's well with me ta 😁 Walditch is just a bit East of Bridport, just off the A35
