I’m an artist, geometer, and vintage compass collector, among other things. Eventually you will find videos relating to these interests. I’m quietly filling a tiny niche on the internet. Low budget, low tech, low expectations. Unscripted and unedited.
Below you will find links to my Instagram account and a few other helpful places I recommend.

foot on the table ???!!! I am unsubscribed ! Bye
I hope you’re being sarcastic
my favorite is the mars matic technical pen, i do not use technical pen inks though, they will inevitably clog your pens, i instead use platinum carbon black ink
I like the Staedtler MarsMatics as well. I’ve used India ink and acrylic ink by Dr. Ph Martins (Spectralite) with no issues at all.
@@jasonbrentpresley fair enough, i havent tried acrylic inks though also most of my technical pens are on the thinner side (0.1, 0.13, 0.18, 0.2, etc.), so im very much scared on putting weird liquids lol. platinum carbon black ink was specifically engineered for fountain pens, which are way more delicate than technical pens, so i can trust that ink for my relatively-less-delicate technical pens
You didn’t show the process to get the weight and thin pin back in the nib. Don’t skip the most difficult parts.
To be fair, I did show this part in a previous video. But I agree with a few others that with the very small sizes of pens the needle should not be removed for cleaning as they are very difficult to replace without bending them and causing irreversible damage.
Jason, I really appreciate this video! I also was on eBay looking at a set like this, only so that I could have more points, and was curious what all the bits and bobs in it were for. So happy I found this info!
I’m glad you found this video helpful.
The "100" stands for 100cm. They also had -150 and -200. The longer beams come with one or two wheel supports
I am intrested, what is the best way to contact you? Please
What are you interested in, exactly?
Cool!👌
where can I buy it?
Keep an eye out on eBay. They come up for sale every so often.
@ could you sell to me this comppas set ? 🙏😅
I’m not sure I still have this exact set anymore. Most of the sets I’ve reviewed on this channel have since been sold. The best place to find these sets is on eBay. They come up for sale every so often.
It's a REAL BAD IDEA to disassemble those small pieces directly over the sink drain, without some screen or mesh protecting it. If some of the small parts slips, it's lost forever.
Perhaps it’s a bad idea. I’ve never lost anything.
That is a beautiful draughting set thanks for sharing.
It was a beautiful set. I’ve since sold it.
That compass is it from itt tech?😂
Did I reference this in another video? If I did I’m glad you found it funny as I’m not actually funny very often. I have a very dry humor.
I think you might be living in the wrong century.
You are 100% correct!
Wow, that's a gorgeous set Jason!
Yes, it’s very gorgeous. I think the Riefler G35 is my favorite set I currently own (most of the sets I’ve reviewed on RUclips have since been sold).
I have the same pen but in 0.1, mine won’t work even though I already cleaned it. Do you might know the problem? I can’t really replace mine right now cause it’s hella expensive I’ve been trying to make it work since last Tuesday still not working 😢
I can’t know what the problem is without looking at the pen. However, the needle inside the tip of the very small pens (0.18mm, 0.25mm,etc) is very fine and easily bent if removed and re-inserted. If this happens then the needle/weight won’t be able to freely move up/down and ink flow will be prohibited.
. Oh wow , seems to me the mars matic is more popular . than rotring's rapidograh / isograph
Well, they are definitely more widely available and easy to obtain.
Using a compass might seem like a no-brainer but it takes some use and practice to learn their individual features, strengths and quirks. Thanks for putting in the time to make these videos, I’ve been adding Rotring compasses to my collection since I discovered the channel.
Are you not intelligent enough to pause the recording when the garbage truck goes by or your daughter interrupts the video?
I’m such an imbecile I can’t even comprehend your question, but thanks for expressing such care and concern over my videography acumen!
@@jasonbrentpresley Glad to be of assistance.
Any differences when it comes to accuracy between this style of drop bow and the straight type shown on your other videos?
No - there’s not really a difference in accuracy. The main difference between the one in this video and the other one made by Rotring is the pencil is vertical, so the lead marking will stay true to size, whereas the one with a steep angle will tend to have a wider line over time. For this same reason this drop bow would be slightly preferred for use with a tech pen.
@@jasonbrentpresley Thanks Jason, hadn’t even considered that.
hello, if i may ask, how much do you think it's worth ?
There’s not really an objective value for an item like this. Basically it’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, which can vary a lot. However, there is a reasonable range of price considering the brand, quality, condition, and rarity. I believe I sold this set for around $60.
Richard, will keep looking on Ebay thanks again.
Where did you buy the beam was it on the internet or what I really need one? Richard from Cibolo TX
Yes, I purchased this beam compass on eBay. These larger beam compasses come up for sale every so often. Keep your eyes peeled.
Is it still usable when the needle inside broke?
No. If the needle is badly bent or broken the pen won’t work, as this is the only moving part of a tech pen and the mechanism of delivering/restricting ink flow.
I have cleaned my pen but it doesn't work? What could be the issue? I couldn't figure it out
Does the needle move freely inside the nib? If you shake it back and forth you should hear and feel the weight going back and forth.
This may sound a bit silly but could you make a video for how to use a compass? I used to constantly have my compass point come out of the paper until I learnt that you must lean the compass in the direction you want to draw the circle. This works for large circles but I am totally incapable of drawing small circles even when I have the compass that has the bending arms as once again, the needle comes out of the paper.
Sure - just give me some time…
I am sure Kern made lenses for Bolex cine cameras.
I've just bought a draftsmen set off eBay, for £25. The quality of these old instruments is second to none. They were made for a lifetime, and more, of use.
I have started using Rotring Isograph pens a year ago for technical drawings, but I didn't recognise, that the end of the cap pops out, and can be used for what you have shown in the video. It will come in handy for easier disassembly before cleaning. Thank you for the tip! And may I add: I love watching these drafting tool reviews/videos!😀
I’m glad you found this video helpful. Thanks for watching.
I found an E20 in my moms stuff after she died
That’s a nice find.
So many sets ago.....still a great set.
can you recommend any alternatives, I can't seem to find this on amazon Canada
Yeah, you won’t be able to find anything like this set on Amazon - these sets (or their equivalent) are simply not made anymore. Your best bet is to look on eBay for a good vintage set in good condition. There are many good sets out there, depending on what you’re looking for exactly. Another possible resource is @mike.wyndham , who is in Canada. You can find him on Instagram and he sometimes has drafting equipment for sale.
@@jasonbrentpresley Thanks for your reply. It was very helpful. Much appreciaited.
Have you seen the drawing sets on the London Fine site, pretty expensive sets on there from Lotter.
I’m not familiar with the London Fine site but I have seen some of the Lotter sets before. They made a parallel compass which is pretty cool.
@@jasonbrentpresley Hi Jason, I have dropped in lucky and just bought the Lotter 209a set offered at half price by one seller, I weakened and now have the interesting parallel compass.
I have a Kern drawing set with the pens and I now know what the double attatchment is for, thanks for sharing the video.
You’re welcome. I’m glad you found this video helpful.
Keep it up!
Why would you use technical pen instead of a lead holder?
Thanks
Permanence.
You can use a fine sewing needles for the pricker.
Thanks for the suggestion. Fortunately I happen to have a nice Haff pricker with a built-in magnifier.
@@jasonbrentpresley Have you done a video of the tool, would love to see it.
Como se usa el que parece un lapicero?
Creo que te refieres a la pluma reglamentaria. En el futuro haré un vídeo sobre estos bolígrafos y cómo funcionan.
The rotring universale adapter is #1. On that metal adapter, thre is a threaded insert that comes out, leaving a really large thread diameter...any ideas what could screw into that?
No not really. I think it’s just so the tech pen/pencil can be threaded in from either direction.
Thanks for the review. These compasses made by Riefler are really great. Smooth action and hold there place with no springback.
I have that compass and it is solid, one could do much worse than this one. For me I found Alan's website and he said I needed a beam compass and a winged compass, a pricker with loupe and a good ruling pen. So I went searching and I found a different beam set and I bought it, then I found the giant rotring set for cheap and bouught that and then I found a winged compass/beam set and bought that. Then I found other shiny sets and bought them. Then I had too many. so I had to sell some...then I bought more. I also was perturbed by the plastic gears on the rotring set and I couldn't find any information on the set and after much searching I found the drawing instrumet collector group. Now i'm seemgly trapped.....
You’re right, this compass is solid and one could do much worse. That makes two of us that are trapped - although lately I’ve been pretty good about getting rid of stuff.
@@jasonbrentpresley The hard part is to not follow up the "getting rid of" with some "obtaining more of...."
There are much worse addictions.
True
Mike, Everyone's favorite Canadian!
There is another version of rotring telescopic compass with both legs extending up to 55 mm each and allowing to trace circles up to 62 cm in diameter: This is one of the rarest compass i have ever seen mainly produced in Argentina where the Company had a division.
In 1983 Rotring produced a compass sucker attachment for tracing circles on film and avoid compass tip from making holes on film surface. The section of the sucker stem was 3mm
Whats with the tip that looks like clamps
assuming you mean a tip like @ 5:30 ... it's an adjustable nib for ink. when you dip that tip in ink, the ink is suspended between the two legs. if you screw the legs closer together you get a thinner line, thread them apart and your line gets wider
It’s called a ruling pen - a very old type of pen for making lines. I’ll make a video on them when I have time.
The main ruling pen with the black handle has a quick opening sliding clip which opens the tines for easy of cleaning, the clip is also made from Nickel silver.
Does Kern do 4mm size inserts too?
I’m not sure if you’re asking if Kern made a 4mm attachment or if they will receive a 4mm attachment. The answer to both questions is yes. I happen to have a Kern Swiss set that includes a 4mm threaded attachment for tech pens. This same set will of course receive a 4mm shank attachment.
@@jasonbrentpresley I see, this was very helpful, thank you for taking the time!
I love this stuff too 😂
That universal Rotring attachment looks quite useful!
It’s very useful indeed!
First vintage drafting set I was able to get my hands on was a Riefler E20. Love the drop bow on this G35 set
This G35 set is still one of my all time favorites. I don’t think I will ever get rid of it.
I appreciate the detail you went into with the divider gearhead. Exactly what I was searching for.
What diameter of technical pen does this hold? I need a scribe so have been searching for the layout compass version of these but no luck so I might have to replace the technical pen with a scribe
I’m not sure what the exact diameter of the pencils or tech pens are, but fortunately they are all uniform as far as the diameter and threading.
@@jasonbrentpresley Found it. M10x0.75 is the standard.
I've been searching for quickset wing type divider with no knuckles but no such luck.
Just keep searching….
