Hi, I am Jay Hassler. I have played the clarinet professionally in NYC for 30 years. Performances range from Carnegie Hall to the White House. I am also an experienced educator. In addition to my full-time job at the oldest independent school in New York City, I have taught hundreds of people to play the clarinet in private lessons. I created the Clarinet Ninja Dojo for adults who want to learn, relearn, or send their playing to brand-new heights. Check out ClarinetNinja.com for my free material as well as how to join the Dojo.

Hello! May I know what grit you should use on the cork of the Fobes Debut mouthpiece if you are to sand it?
I always use the same sandpaper that I would use for my reeds. I would NOT suggest this - only because that is far to fine and it takes a while. Maybe 80-120? I have only used sandpaper on reeds. I am an apartment dweller with absolutely no traditional "work around the house" skills. Seroiusly none. That cork always needs to be sanded...so I stepped up to that but it took longer than it should because I used 400 grade sandpaper
Great video Jay. With regard to the Yamaha YCL-650, I bought a secondhand one recently after seeing a RUclips Shorts video with John Kurokawa playing one. He made it sound fantastic so I'm sure any issue will either be related to the player's technique, the mouthpiece/reed combination, or the fact that the specific horn has some setup issues.
Thanks for the insight on that! I can only infer things about instruments that I have not played myself. It's great to have confirmation on that :)
How do you like it?
@@faeriesmak It is a beautiful horn and sounds good to me. However, I've only ever played on one other model so not much to compare it to. Plus that was in the 80s and it was an old plastic Boosey and Hawkes Regent. I took a chance and couldn't justify anything more expensive...happy so far!!

Jay, good to see you again. I'm still at it, but I'm old and practical, I'm never going to play classical or Dixieland. Currently, I'm improving my reading skills and playing along with Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Vocalists bend notes like crazy. Is there a way to emulate that. Are there preferred mouthpieces, reeds? I always enjoy your videos.
HiI Rocco! I am glad to hear that you are still at it. I will make a video about this topic - thank you for asking the question and providing me with a great idea. In general terms, a more open mouthpiece with a less resistant reed is going to be more flexible. I would think cane reeds would be better than synthetic. What setup are you currently using?
@@clarinetninja I recently got a Vandoren 5RV lyre and am using Rico 2.5 reeds, though I'm experimenting with Vandoren 3's.
@@roccoliuzzi8394 The 5RV Lyre is a great mouthpiece...I find It to be literally in the middle of the mouthpiece world. It is a wonderful place to be. I am not sure which Ricos and Vandorens you are moving to and from, but that should be just about right to get some flexibility without it being too crazy
Great teaching technique althought I would like a bit more time and/orexplanation on the symbols and what they mean. It is one of my harder spots and you make it sound so simple. Thanks for your input it's greatly appreciated.

Best dad in the world will you teach me the clarinet when the dentist says that I can learn I love you 💕💕💕🥳🥳🥳
Kiddo! As soon as the dentist says it's ok, I will teach you everything I know about the clarinet :)
All this faf just to keep up the dubious benefits of wood clarinettes. Plastic will never blow out, never need oil, never need to be broken in, and never crack.
If you are getting everything you want out of your plastic clarinet that's great! I don't agree that the benefits of a wood clarinet are "dubious" - but if you want to hold an opinion that essentially characterizes every historically great and presently great clarinetist as an idiot for using a wood clarinet I won't stand in your way
@clarinetninja all I'm saying, as a total noob, is that every pro on here says the benefit of the fancy stuff is that it's a "tool that doesn't get in the way of the vision". So here are six different ways that an expensive wood clarinette can randomly fail if you don't do the following six steps every time you take it out of the case and you better not be in a hot or cold or dry or wet climate or outside or having a fever or doing ket or more than 100 miles from the nearest certified clarinette technician. It is normal for humans to develop magical thinking about this kind of thing. I've seen it in photography with the lens coating conspiracy. It's a well known phenomenon in wine tasting. I even bought a blackberry after the iPhone came out. I do appreciate the content!
Excellent description
Thank you!
Thanks Jay. Great advice. I will follow it
Thanks Alvaro!
This is a great demo of overall hand position. I do I need to rubber band my left pinky to the keys. it's the wanderer of my hands! I will look at my hands in videos with the sound off so I don't get "distracted" by the sound and focus there. It definitely helps. This is especially true for video from performances. It shows whether or not what you practice is carrying through on stage. The minimum effort/strain reminds me a bit of Alexander technique.
I have never studied Alexander technique formally, but I have been to a couple of classes and know many people that teach it. It is a terrific practice and I am sure had some influence on my ideas in this video. I have to remember NOT to pay attention to this when I am playing for real because it's a sure fire recipe to mess things up! I practice it and hope that it works its way into my unconscious:)
i love youtube. i harass a retired teacher to give me lessons xD, and they're great, but it's so valuable to hear other voices too! thanks for your videos i'm pretty surprised at just how much you can cover the bottom key without it flattening the G
Bonjour ! What should I buy for a Bb clarinet if I have nothing to compare? I would like to try the French cut. I'm not a professional, I'm learning (but I'm not a beginner). Several years ago I bought European cut reeds but Légère used to put stickers for the numbers and now the stickers have gone. I have a 2.75 and a 3. One is better but I don't know the strength (Yes they are still great 8 years later!). I would appreciate if you could help me and sorry for any mistake in my English, I'm French. Merci.
Your English is fantastic. You should hear me destroy the French language. It would be laughable if not so sad. The French Cut Legere matched up very well with the strength of the V12's. I don't know what reed you are using, but use that as somewhat of a starting place. I have always enjoyed playing the legeres a little more resistant that cane reeds because the resistance is so even and cooperative. Would you please let me know how it goes?
Thank you! I ordered a number 3. I will get it on December 31st. I am impatient to try it. I wanted to order directly from Légère because I understand that you can exchange but they send only to Canada and USA. About cane I was playing with V12 number 3 but once you switch to plastic it’s impossible to go back to cane (for me).
@@Neville8888 I have switched back twice! you can do it too (if you were to want to!)
@@clarinetninja I’m playing in a carribean workshop and the « teacher » gave me a v12 3 so I will definitely try it! But with cane it was so hazardous! 🤞
@@Neville8888 I don't agree that a cane reed is hazardous :) I live a wildly hazardous life if that's the case!
For the 'sticky' reed case that appears to have a rubberized coating, use Mother's VLR to clean it. It'll restore the supple feel and eliminate the sticky feel. I have an older 4-reed Vandoren reed case with dissicant and that Protec 12-reed case. It fits in my Protec Carry-All pro pac case.
Use a long Q-tip swab to "paint" a track of bore oil straight down the bottom of the inside of the bore. This creates a channel for the condensation and helps to keep it away from the tone holes. Rice paper works great to absorb moisture from the pads after swabbing.
thanks for the information in this episode. Can you give me a ballpark for a price for a used Backun Protege Cocobolo clarinet? The condition is exceptional but not quite mint. Thanks!
Hi Jeff! I am out of my sphere of expertise with the valuation of Backuns. I would think that modeling the percentage off the purchase price that goes along with other clarinets. Outside of that (which you probably already thought of) I would be uncomfortable speaking with authority on that
I suppose the most surprising thing was the use of a #4 reed on the BD4. Ouch. Embouchure of steel needed for that combination, at least for me. I suppose it was a V12 and not the classic blue.
Hi Richard! It is indeed a V12 but it feels quite comfortable for me. A balanced reed with the right support/voicing and I love it! Thanks for watching and commenting
Awesome stuff. Thank you sharing rhis
Thank you! :)
What's your take on circular breathing... d'you practice it regularly, efficiently ?
I think circular breathing is really cool. I do not do it. I do not practice it. In my life only unusual new music has had a call for it. One way that I look at it is that singers don't do it. We always talk about playing like a singer would sing. If one is attracted to the pieces where one needs to do it - It is a very cool thing to be able to do. Many years ago, I studied with a somewhat famous circular breather and was told that it's the "future of the clarinet". I found that not to align with my career.
I can guess that the 61mm-66mm barrel is best for a C clarinet, as long as it fits the clarinet.
That’s an interesting idea. I have no idea about that. If you emailed Brad I am sure he would have a solid idea about that
@@clarinetninja I'm barely getting my sound back. I've got a Ridenour hard rubber clarinet so having an adjustable hard rubber barrel has appeal to me... once I'm used to the equipment I already have.
@@clarinetninja But I have an old Albert system C clarinet that belonged to my great grandfather. The barrel is tiny by comparison to a Bb.

Hello from Brazil! I've been playing the clarinet for around 6 months and I really want to thank you for your videos, they have been of great help! Lately I've been struggling a lot with right hand tension related pain and experimenting with setting the thumb rest to different heights, but not to much avail. I've seen a lot of very conflicting information on this topic (and everything clarinet related really haha) so would love your opinion on this.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! I am glad that my content has been useful. My first suggestion is to try a neck strap. I don't think that moving the thumb rest is going to make the difference you are looking for. 30 years ago a teacher of mine said something that I have found to be True - tension is contagious. I would look for it starting at my shoulder and down my arm. It could be starting anywhere in there. Let me know how it goes. Unrelated - 25 or so years ago I did a tour of 30 cities in Brazil. I got to see many parts of your beautiful country that most don't get to see. I loved it
Shouldn’t the keys be off before oiling the bore? Won’t the oil degrade the pads?
good question. I have always just oiled the bore by pulling a swab that I use just for oiling. I put enough oil on to make the bore shiny but not enough that it is running on to the pads. I think when a technician does it, they do it with the keys off. That is a much more significant process, and one that I wouldn't engage in myself. There are so many very passionate perspectives on oiling, it can be hard to move with confidence taking any suggested path. As far as your question - getting oil on the pads should be avoided for sure! I have never had an issue oiling the bore and avoiding getting oil on the pads.
Very good video. Because of you I have practised a lot the book of oppelman. There is also in it a very good study on grace notes and 3 studies on chords with unsual accidents (double flat and double sharp). Thanks from France.

If the cat is pissed you must be doing it right!
While I haven't played the Bb clarinet reeds yet, I've tested the tenor sax version (effectively also the bass clarinet version) and found it very similar to the Vandoren Blue Box/D'Addario Reserve reeds in terms of sound & strength. Not sure if this is true with the Bb clarinet reeds either? -Josh Woods whom you met at Clarinetest 2024
Thank you, thank you! I am by no means a pro player (more like coulda, woulda, shoulda) but still play as much as I can. I NEED a new barrel so I can accurately tune with the musicians at my church. How fast can I get one?? I liked the Delvin Behn Bores, and the rubber with rubber ring.
I am so glad I made something that found you at the right time! Brad's barrels are really game changing. In terms of how fast you can get one...head over to Brads site www.clarinetmouthpiece.com/product-page/evo-clarinet-adjustable-barrel and see whats going on :) I don't know what his inventory looks like at any point, but I would imagine that he has stuff ready to go.
Thanks for taking the time to do this well (better audio equipment could help) Double lip embouchure may or may not be a requirement for a good sound. I heard Elsa Verdehr perform at the Clarinetfest (Clarinet Clinic it was called then) In Denver about 1976. She is a master at double lip playing and has the widest dynamic range I've ever witnessed and a very expressive sound balanced with flawless technique. In front of about 250 clarinetists she demonstrated both single and double embouchure in a rather extended solo passage. The few listeners who chose correctly when asked admitted they guessed and it was not evident in the playing. It probably comes down to doing either one correctly. Years later I played in an orchestra in the New York area with Dennis Dougherty (A former student of Kieth Stein [Chicago Symphony Double Lip player]). Mr Dougherty told me that Stein switched him to double lip because of the muscular fatigue he experience in his arms and hands from playing single, even though it was not a "biting issue". He also told me that in large ensembles playing loudly he can not hear his own playing using double lip so he switches to single lip and listens to his own intonation through the bones in his upper teeth! I think Mr. Dougherty has a great expressive sound but it may be as much the big bore instruments he plays on as it is with his embouchure. Listen here when you get a chance: ruclips.net/video/-1OOMcixT7A/видео.html
A teacher of mine who was a student of Bonade showed me something related to this subject that Bonade taught. Practice very slowly while opening the fingers very wide and then work on accurately finding the keys from long distance. This is just for practice, not for actually playing this way. If you can find the holes accurately in this way, you are in good shape. Also, helps to relax the fingers. I think your exercize here would be a good preliminary to this Bonade exercise.
To have an idea characterized even tangentially related to Bonade makes my day. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)
After watching this video, I got my clarinet out and tried the lesson. Awesome exercise! Thanks!!
I am glad that you found in inspiring:)
My big right hand issue is I hit the sliver key whenever I play Eb. Just enough to open it slightly but that’s all it takes to mess me up. His looks like it might help train my fingers to stay in the right place.
I hope it helps you with that. Let me know how it goes please :)
I have a question you may be able to answer. When I look at content on RUclips they class content as beginner, very easy. What do people class a person who has played clarinet for around 3 months. Most content is over the break and difficult articulation. When will I reach a beginner?
You ask a good question. It's important to take things that are offered to us but also recognize that sometimes they need to be transformed in some way to be right for our ability level. This can be a difficult thing to do in the early stages . RUclips content is a challenge because it is geared towards a general audience. The creator can't be aware and tailor it to everyone's unique needs. Do you have anyone helping you learn? If you haven't checked it out already, I have a free beginner/refresher course that may be helpful to you. ClarinetNinja.com
@@clarinetninja Thanks for your response. I am starting to have some lessons next week. Just had a browse through your refresher course. I will be visiting again. The articulation and the fingering ones especially. Thanks again.
I was thinking earlier I need something like this. I get death grip on my right hand and it locks up.I also have a hard time connecting my fingering to my brain. A lot of people on RUclips show beginners C D E F and G and that’s all you get as a beginner. I know it’s free and we mustn’t grumble but I am sure there would be an audience. There probably are a lot on RUclips but get drowned out the mere mortals.
RUclips is a challenging place to share ideas as one can never make something that hits for every viewer. I certainly try to create content that has a wide appeal, but it can be difficult to do.
Great lesson, thank you 😊
