Being a Cherokee boy, I learned about Will Rogers while learning to speak Cherokee from my grandparents. Lessons about Will came alongside my Cherokee speech lessons. Will was my first hero outside of our family. He's berm my hero since I was 4 and I'm 65 now and Will is still my hero. Sometimes the more things change the more they stay the same. Betty Blake Rogers was the most interesting woman, particularly for the era she and Will loved during. Her intellect and strength were characteristics that helped shape Will's career. If I'm not mistaken, it was Betty who suggested to Will to get new material from the newspapers. Ultimately though, this quote that Will said about Betty says it all, "The day I roped Betty was the greatest performance of my life”. After Will crossed over* in the plane crash in Point Barrow, Alaska with fellow Oklahoman, Wiley Post, Will's son, Will Rogers, Jr. quoted his father again with the same line, buttressing what Will had said years earlier. Betty Blake Rogers was a woman ahead of her time. She had such "moxie" to be able to willing allow her husband to wander the globe doing his work without a hint of jealousy or even a doubt about his fidelity. My wife and I have discussed this quite often and my wife's answer is that she would do the same for me. My wife and I have the same trust between us, without a question or a hint of doubt. Also, though I'm hardly as good a roper as Cousin Will, but if I were my wife, Avenasa** would have been the greatest performance of my life. My wife is the best person I've ever known, without question. Our love is forever, and in this world today, that's really saying something, but we do. Blessings to all you Will and Betty Blake Rogers aficionados.

Was Will the first Indian to present an Oscar?

Growing up a Cherokee boy in the Appalachian Mountains, I learned about one of my heroes, Will Rogers at the same time my lessons in the Cherokee language began. As I grew up, more and more stories of Will Rogers were added to my little treasure box. Old newspaper clippings about Will or his columns piled in. At 17, I enlisted in the USAF and got stationed in Colorado Springs for a short period. While there I bought my first Stetson hat as close to Will's style as I could find. Now, I only buy Stetson hats to wear on our little horse farm in the middle of nowhere. Heck, I even have a genuine Will Rogers rope tricks book and can do a few myself. No one can ever come close to Will Rogers with ropes though. Will Rogers was the finest roper the world has ever seen.

I wonder if Will wouldn't have sympathized with those living under Communist rule. Sure, he'd say we have to take care of our own first, but I bet he'd argue we couldn't turn a blind eye to the starvation and poverty in Asia due to communist rule. I bet he would have questioned the way we did it, though.

I remember watching Bill on TV when I was a youngster. He performed roping tricks and talked about his father. I liked him immediately but I never saw him again. He was a good guy.

WILL ROGERS is the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER KNOWN. I might be Eastern Band Cherokee, but I'll never change my opinion about Will Rogers, he truly is the most importantperson this country has ever produced.
