    If any Europeans are curious, this is what learning a language in North America is like. You learn a bit in school, but there's no place to keep using it and everyone you know forgets it.

    • @RollingToaster
      @RollingToaster Год назад

      As a North American, I disagree. The onus is on you to keep foreign languages in your life same way for anyone across the globe. There's little excuse nowadays. Listen to podcasts in your target language while you're commuting to work, washing dishes, running, walking your dog. Set all your devices in target language. Select target language as default on apps, youtube etc. Same with Netflix, popular series are offered in 3,4,6+ languages put the English subtitles on and pick the audio in your target language. Instead of doom scrolling junk each night, spend 10 minutes reading target language news, load all your social media/follow interest groups in target language. You have Google translate, online dictionnaries and the whole internet at the tip of your finger to look up words, expressions etc. Your smartphone follows you around, in waiting rooms, lunch break.. Don't know how it was in the 80s or 90s..but it's definetly so easy now. Spanish, French, Swedish, Russian, Mandarin, German, Arabic, Japanese, Italian...unless you're trying to learn some highly regional and dying language like Monegasque, you're comparing apples to oranges.

    • @kitsilanocat
      @kitsilanocat Год назад

      It's more about English dominating the world, it's the same with all English speakers: even the British despite living in a continent that has a multitude of languages, their overwhelming majority do not speak any other language. They expect everyone to speak English and do not bother. In the continent, the bare minimum is to speak 2-3 languages, not to mention dialects that can be considered languages like occitan or neapolitan.
