Composite mod and new feet for the ZX Spectrum
Просмотров 1172 года назад
The ZX Spectrum is still having some video issues so I decided to do a composite video mod on it. I also needed to replace the feet, and got a bit carried away with cleaning up some glue to mixed levels of success. Wasn't expecting this one to end up 30 minutes long, so I've gone the extra mile and added chapter marks so you can skip forward if you prefer. Note - I noticed only after uploading ...

ZX Spectrum - Bad Video Repair

In this video I repair a ZX Spectrum with bad video output caused by a faulty transistor. I bought this Spectrum a couple of months ago, and had been waiting for replacement parts to arrive before making this video. Apologies for some of the camera work in the soldering portions of the video, my face was right next to the camera, and I wasn't using a separate microphone. I'll be trying to do th...

    Very Interesting that you can even power up the VIC-20 by reversing the power flow through the userport. I did not even know that this was even possible. In the video, Because you are using PAL, Some VIC games like GORF were created for NTSC format, so to compensate, PAL machines can move the screen using the cursor keys or joystick to center the screen. Also, The reverse is also true, If you are in NTSC and run a game originally created in PAL format and run it on an NTSC machine, It will do the same exact thing for NTSC users. IT was just an ingenious way for the machine to compensate for NTSC vs. PAL Format differences that is in the VIC's design. Also, I noticed that while your VIC does not have the RARE PET Keyboard, IT DOES have the RARE Unobtainium PET keyboard Shift Lock key switch, which was used on a few rare updated keyboards. That switch alone (If it is working and locks) is worth more than your entire VIC-20 itself. No lie. You might want to Keep that switch for yourself, or pick up a newer VIC or C64 keyboard that has a newer Shift Lock installed, and Sell off the VIC Keyboard you have because it has the uber rare PET Keyboard Shift Lock installed in it. Just letting you know! And finally, I think your problem with your VIC is the Character ROM or BASIC ROM chips. They should both be socketed for easy removal and replacement. Tony K. ;)

    Mono connectors can sometimes be called TS (tip-sleeve) connectors And stereo connectors can sometimes be called TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) connectors en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phone_connector_(audio) And my keyboard actually uses a TRRS cable to connect the two separate halves, fun!

    hello, as well as being your new subscriber, I welcome you to the owner club of this fantastic expansion! I also made some videos about it. My vic 20 arfon has a PET keyboard and a VIC gold-ceramic chip. The arfon expansion card is still a prototype, ie without the manufacturer's logo! I would like to leave you some links here, where I try it with demos, but I believe that the YT algorithm can eliminate the message if I insert links

    "I don't really know how to solder." followed by "my understanding is flux is a bit of cheat". So much wrong here, flux acts like primer preparing the surface to bond strongly to the solder, not using solder risk dry unreliable joints. Could do with a solder sucker. Still, a competent repair.

    • @brimsor
      @brimsor 2 года назад

      "a competent repair" - I'll take that hahaha. Thanks for the clarification on flux, I think I've got my head around it more than I did when filming this video, but I've still got a lot to learn. Definitely looking to get something better for desoldering, using the wick really becomes a pain.

    I'm pretty sure I cut myself every single time I opened my computer back in the 1990s and 2000s Did the average computer case get friendlier after that, or did my change in income mean I could buy higher quality, or did I become more cautious?
