A big congratulations to Jim Moores and his team for completing construction on by far the most complicated design project we have undertaken to date. Jim came to B&B with a dream boat in mind and we had a lot of fun working with him. Patience is a 27' luxury motor launch that is unique in every way. She features a modern hull shape combined with a classic Hereshoff stern and a "Dreadnought" bo...

On May 21, 2023, I will turn 80. I plan to do a celebratory cruise in my sailboat “Carlita” around the whole of the Pamlico Sound. A distance of 500 nautical miles. It has been just over 10 years since I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I never expected to make it to 80, let alone still have the desire or feel fit enough to attempt this cruise. I believe that Rock Steady Boxing has played a big ...

I can hear Alan salivating.
That wiring is Beautiful, you must've worked at Hatteras?
Beautiful boat, nicely built! Makes me want to build one and do the Transat! Congrats to Josh on having the gumption to do all this! Hugely impressive. I think that the 5.80 class has shown that circumnavigating in a small and very well-designed boat can make such adventures more accessible to people without huge budgets.
As long as we're on the topic of head height, what is the kit's height floor to ceiling in the main and forward bulkheads?
Nice looking boat, looks to be well thought out. Electric panel looks great!
Josh does boat systems and batteries for work so his systems are top notch.
Good morning, magnificent work. Why have you made an opening in the stern of the boat? Is it so that the water that enters the outboard cavity flows better? Thank you (google translate)
Ballast weight?
The steel keel and lead ballast bulb halves are about 244kg a bit over 500lbs.
@bandbyachtdesigns thanks. And what displacement?
@@eolof7 i'm just reading off their website. Lightship 920kg. It's a class boat so there is a minimum weight i'm pretty sure for racing. classglobe580.com/specification/
@bandbyachtdesigns thanks
A little credit for the designer maybe?
Always very important. You can see Janusz's name right below the 3d model and again his name with a link to his website is the very first sentence of our webpage on the kit at bandbyachtdesigns.com/classglobe580
Can i buy only the project? i'm from Italy
Check the 5.80 website for cnc cutters near you. I'm not sure if there is an official Italian kit producer but there are some in Europe for sure.
Very well explained. I do, however (there is always a 'however') wish there was a section on the ballast keel included.
thanks i really enjoyed that im a master builder now , nah just kidding but that was well done plus its a smart little ship
That is amazing
Everyone uses the Axis mast in the beginning.
Music is shit.
Great video other than the nauseatingly repetitive syntho-music. When that isn't playing, the commentary is excellent and the maps are first rate. I would really have liked to hear what it sounded like at the end when you came crashing into Oriental Bay--instead I got that horrible excuse for music.
Great video
Excellent setup! 👍
I love the cat ketch design with no fussy jib sails to deal with.
Vendes los planos
Beautiful video, thanks for sharing. Also interested in learn about what kind of sail plan that is?
bandbyachtdesigns.com/blog/why-a-cat-ketch/
@@bandbyachtdesigns Good article, thanks for the link.
What software did you use to show the designs?
All done in Rhino
Beautiful design. 12’ Jessy doing well, but of course I want to build something bigger!
Nice. Perhaps you would like to provide a link to Seakeeper Ride information in the box below the video. Thank you
I love the cat ketch design. No jib sail to fuss with.😊
how low is that first bridge if you had to guess? Still not sure if my boat will fit under for our attempt this year. Awesome videos btw, thanks for sharing!
Tough to say but it's about 5 feet. Our Core Sound 20 was about 48" tall with masts down and we always made it under but one year a CS20 mark 3 didn't quite fit. They had to take the mast out of tabernacle to get an extra inch lower.
Nice
I don't like the design of a keel. It will snap off due to fatigue and the boat will capsize - like most do. You need a full keel!
Je suis minimaliste, mais à à ce point... La même chose mais de 6m95 de long et 2m80 de large, et avec une quille-sabre et un double-safran, là je signe.
Another advantage of Spindrifts: easy to fix even greater damages. I built a 10 ft. in Brazil and I love it.
Hi from Algiers (Algeria), Taylor and Alan !! Won't you come spend some hollydays here and help me to build the same for me ??? I shall be very glad to meet you !!
Bringt nothing new really. Rather a Muscadet KIT possible with removed interior. Not to compare.
Excellent, thoughtful, and thorough. Thank you.
Wow.
😮
It's obvious that trimarans are the best design of sailing craft. Fast and close-winded. But I still prefer mono-hulls because they are more "salty." That is more traditional, more cultural resonance, more connection to the past.
Quite an interesting design- the 'dreadnought' bow seems to draw inspiration from the wave-piercing bows of modern racing sailboats, but of course the rest of the design evokes a classic motor yacht. The finish and brightwork really show it off. Congrats all around.
The native Americans used that bow to great effect.
Curious if you borrowed Carlita's #4 sails for this trip? What number Core Sound 17.3 would this boat be? Loved your drone footage. I noticed in the walk through video, you had a short clip of Chief rowing. I'd love to see more of your NCC footage.
Good eye. yes we did borrow Graham's sails for this trip since we were waiting on a sail order that didn't arrive in time. This boat is actually hull #2 but it took a long time to get her done so Graham's boat #4 was launched well before her. Yeah, i've got some more footage, not that great so i didn't bother but maybe i'll add it.
I will obtain those plans and build that boat!
A true S&G design would be so much easier and faster to build, and could be made just as strong.
if you like it than you should have put a string on it
We were there that year with our Core Sound 20 MK 3. We started on the south, Graham started on the north. Perfect boat for this area.
Good afternoon. Watching your videos I realized that the daggerboard is not in the middle of the cockpit. Do you think it is equally effective? It is clear that space is gained, any other advantages?(google translate) Thank you.
Seems to be. We have never noticed a difference from one tack to the other. All of our Cat ketch designs use offset centerboards mainly to keep the keel continuous and strong but this one has it more offset. Didn't seem to make any difference. Space gain is the only advantage we were after here.
HOW MANY CENTIMETERS ARE THERE FROM THE OUTBOARD TO THE Stern?
approximately 66cm for my short shaft motor.
Thanks for the response and speed
sorry, and how many centimetesrs ar from the top of outboard tramson to bottom of boat?
@@jatsualbizu8748 It's about 35cm. It took a lot of trial and error to get it as far back as I could. I recommend dry fitting everything and you really need the motor on hand to test the fit. I wouldn't use those measurements to make the mount and glue it in without having the motor to test.
Thank you very much for your help and the videos made, they are very inspiring and educational@@bandbyachtdesigns
so what would you say for a small trimaran about the size of yours, is it maybe better to opt for a stayless mast with just the main sail? Probably something a little more wing-shaped, maybe like a performance windsurfing sail? i'm having a dilemma
It depends on your goals. A wind surfer rig isn't a stayless rig either it just has the standing rigging (your arms) low down (at the boom connection). You'd need a much stronger mast if it was to be supported only at the bottom. On stayless vs stayed...short answer, stays win. You're really giving up a lot of free power with a stayless mast on even a small trimaran. Hull #2 of the Mini trimaran we changed to having shrouds and a sail track/halyard setup rather than the roller furling which while it worked was incredibly complicated with the headsail and prone to fouling up. Unless you really don't care about speed or going with a relatively narrow beam for a tri I would have shrouds and a forestay. I won't do another small trimaran with a roller furling mast. I've convinced myself it's not worth it. The hobie AI and TI get away with it but they don't have a boom so they're compromising on upwind ability and trading it for setup time. I'd rather be able to point well.
@@bandbyachtdesigns thanks, the answer is exactly what i needed. Stayed it is then. Two more questions if i may? Is "tripod" (forestay + 2 swept back stays roughly 120 deg apart) going to cut it or would i absolutely need shrouds and a backstay? And another one - even though i was being able to point quite high, the amount of leeway made beating virtually senseless, despite sizeable leeboards. Is it a common thing for trimarans? Although i have to say my upwind speed was rather slow and leeboards were just that - boards.
yes shrouds and a forestay are plenty. it's common to split the shrouds at some point and have them to to each crossbeam to help stabilize the structure and spread out the load but not necessarily required. You don't need a backstay. Leeboards are always going to be less effective since they are surface piercing. A centerboard or dagger board will be more efficient and if they are just boards with no shape then you should put at least a rudimentary shape on them. Leeboards are fine if they're shaped well and have a decent aspect ratio. My UFC canoe had a long skinny air foil shaped leeboard and it goes to windward just fine.
👍👍🙂
The transom as drawn scares me.
