i disagree on your point about Indians words that are used to describe people are loaded with meanings and connotations the meaning didnt change because more "real" Indians entered America initially the word was used by settler Americans who believed they had landed in India when they arrived on American shores. at that stage it was so: Indian = indigenous American person. then as settler Americans came into conflict with these people - the meaning of the word changed. now it began to take on a negative connotation to justify the killings and the land takings. to justify the expansion and building of settler American society. for the good of the people funnily enough. Indian = savage, uncivilised, naked, tribal, dirty, enemy etc etc. all the things settler Americans didnt like once indigenous Americans stopped being the enemy and started being integrated into settler American society (i.e. they proved that they were neither savage nor uncivilised); settler American society became exposed to and began to understand their culture better. but the meaning of the word did not change. it was still: if a settler American didnt like what the indigenous American was doing this was the word they used to express their feelings about the matter so a new phrase HAD to be created since that old one was an outdated tool that people now used not to justify killings and land stealing. the term was being used unappropriately, not for the good of wider settler American society (which now included indigenous Americans) but selfishly for personal gain. note also how a new phrase was "created. this instead of the phrase that Native Americans use to refer to themselves being adopted. why?
