Lonesome Fridays 2024 #10: Randall Collins
Happy New Year from the family home in North Georgia and thanks to all who have been tuning in to this Lonesome Fridays series! We’re bringing it in for a landing with Randall Collins, yet another song from “local hero” Norman Blake (just kidding - he does live in N. GA but his notoriety is on the worldwide level!). This one appears on Norman’s 1972 debut album Home in Sulphur Springs.
FYI for you fellow bluegrass guitar nerds out there, I’ll be teaching a 5 week Zoom class on the Sulphur Springs record starting January 5. Link below for the info, and please shoot me a message if you’d like to sign up. Unlike my rendition here, we’ll be getting into the nitty gritty detail of what Norman ...

Doc Watson Song Series Recap - Michael Daves’ School of Bluegrass Vocals on ArtistWorks
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Месяц назад
I just wrapped up a fifteen month series paying tribute to Doc Watson songs, in the monthly welcome videos for my school of bluegrass vocals on @artistworks. This was to commemorate Doc’s centennial in 2023 and highlight for my students his riveting vocal style, vast repertoire, and enduring influence. I was fortunate to have the help of some amazing special guests including several fellow Arti...
LONESOME FRIDAYS 2024 #9 - That's the Way Love Goes
Просмотров 454Месяц назад
Well, I'm doubling up on Lefty Frizzell songs in this Lonesome Fridays series and don't care what anybody thinks! That's The Way Love Goes was a late entry into Lefty's catalog (1973) and under-the-radar at that, released as a b-side to no fanfare. If people know the song, it's usually because Merle Haggard had a hit with it in 1983. I'd heard Merle's version but the song didn't really stick wi...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #8 - Roving Gambler
Просмотров 465Месяц назад
I was recently asked to demo an early '60s Gibson Everly Brothers model guitar for a museum collection. Those guitars look great but don't usually sound great for lead playing, which is fine because they're intended to provide thumpy backup for singing, and the last thing you'd want on an Everly Brothers track would be anything to distract from their exquisite vocals. I asked if I could sing as...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #7 - Slow Train Through Georgia
Просмотров 5062 месяца назад
Last week's Lonesome Fridays song was about a fast train through Georgia, so this week's I thought I'd go the totally opposite direction and do Slow Train Through Georgia by fellow Georgian, the great Norman Blake. The guitar I'm playing is my first instrument, which I got for Christmas when I was 11 or 12. It's a 1982 Yairi Alvarez which I sold to one of my oldest music buddies about 20 years ...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #6 - Bringing in the Georgia Mail
Просмотров 5072 месяца назад
Happy Thanksgiving! For me, this year's celebration was low-key and lovely, at home with my wife in snowy New England. I'm thinking of my extended family in Georgia though we try for a big gathering down there every other year and this is an off year. So I'm sending this week's Lonesome Fridays installment, Bringing In The Georgia Mail, out to them, especially since it's not at all lonesome (an...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #5 - You Don't Know Me
Просмотров 8592 месяца назад
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I bring you one of the greatest songs to ever come out of the state of Texas, which is really saying something. Cindy Walker wrote You Don't Know Me off of a prompt from Eddy Arnold (there's a great video on YT of her telling this story, while wearing fancy silk gloves!). Ray Charles had a hit with it, on one of his Country & Western albums. My version utilizes ...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #4: That Lonesome Old Song
Просмотров 6072 месяца назад
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I'm dusting off a Ralph Stanley gem that straightforwardly fits the bill based on its alone: That Lonesome Old Song (In the days of iTunes I used to joke that if you searched the word "lonesome" in my library, it didn't narrow things down much!). Ralph recorded this one circa 1972 with lead singer Roy Lee Centers, who he said had a voice more like his late broth...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #3: The Pain of Loving You

There are few things that most of us can agree upon these days, but one of them has got to be the awesomeness of Dolly Parton. So for this week's Lonesome Fridays I bring you a Dolly classic, The Pain of Loving You. I don't think this was ever intended as a patriotic song but this week I'm sending it out to those are grieving the country we love, for aligning with a message of doing harm to to ...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #2: Look What Thoughts Will Do
Просмотров 4893 месяца назад
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I'm going back to a Lefty Frizzell classic that I have played in many a solo set. It's got sort of a wailing guitar part that wonders what Bill Monroe might have sounded like on a lap steel. Anyhow, Lefty is the best and I once got to play his famous Gibson J-200 guitar, with his name emblazoned on the pickguard and a custom Bigsby neck. It's the guitar that hel...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #1: Prisoner's Song
Просмотров 4743 месяца назад
Welcome back to Lonesome Fridays, where I share a song each week for the last 10 weeks of the year. They'll all go on a playlist where you can string them together to form a more-or-less coherent solo set. I'm kicking things off with The Prisoner's Song, first recorded and released in 1924 (100 years ago!) by Vernon Dalhart. It had the distinction of being the first million-selling country song...
Dark Hollow - Clarence White with Muleskinner Class Announcement
Просмотров 5863 месяца назад
I’m very excited to be offering a new Zoom course on the guitar style of my hero, Clarence White. It’ll be a deep dive into his playing on the 1973 Muleskinner recordings - both the live TV performance and the studio album. This was one of the last recordings Clarence made before he died tragically in June 1973. His playing is remarkable as he drew inspiration from his Muleskinner bandmates and...
The Golden Rocket - Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Here’s The Golden Rocket, a song that will be on our upcoming Jim & Jesse tribute album (written by Hank Snow). @jhdjolliff and I are getting ready for a concert this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8 in Brooklyn, in the same 19th Century church hall where we tracked the record. It’s a special space and we hope you’ll join us there if you are in the area. 2pm, @OldFirstBrooklyn #bluegrassharmony at...
And Am I Born To Die (Doc Watson style) - Michael Daves & Billy Strings
Просмотров 5 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Got together with Billy Strings as part of a monthly series on Doc Watson songs I’ve been doing for my school of bluegrass vocals on ArtistWorks. The whole discussion was a half hour long and includes three songs. Here’s an excerpt, an old shape note hymn that Doc recorded, And Am I Born to Die (aka Idumea). Billy’s been singing it solo a capella from time to time but I learned a chilling duet ...

Too much fun!
Beautifully done, as usual, Michael. Thank you.
WOWWW, that right hand
Almost my fave Doc tune.
@@jimmymack6820 well what’s your favorite?
Terrible
Damn, that's pretty good!
Super job. Keep them coming.
J-45 sounding good. You also.
Dad would be proud of that deep bass sound you have. Is that a .060 on top?
Awesome as always. My favorite vocal tunes I’ve seen you do are Wichita Lineman and When Someone Wants to Leave
Sweet
Sounds great
The way bro be staring at me makes me scared
This is what you call being in a flow state. Flow state = flow stare
Get a life beyond RUclips commentary and maybe you’ll get good at something, too
Nobody’s looking at you, boss. Try to learn to play an instrument and see how far you get. Then post it on RUclips

@Thatfeelingingwhenprove it then
Bravo!
Love your music,Michael!
Well done Michael !! I love this song
Tim Eriksen brought me here.
@@marvinthemaniac7698 Tim’s the man! I learned this version from my musical godparents in Atlanta, Barbara Panter & Whit Connah but always enjoy hearing Tim singing this, or just about anything
@michaeldaves635 I'm going to give my thanks to Tim when I get my first Grammy Award.
Love it man. Thanks for the song!
big fan of your vocals! Thanks for the upload.
Great job as always, Michael! This tune is also on my new acoustic album! Love Norman Blake!
@@arlenroth8373 thanks! I’ll check it out
@@michaeldaves635 Thanks! Coming out mid-January! Love your stuff!
Thanks again,Michael. You are the BEST! Great rendition. At first I thought you were playing this song a lot faster than Norman;ut when I checked it out it's very close to the same speed if not perfectly same speed. At least according to my left foot.
I always look forward to see your new video! You are very much appreciated! May you have a very blessed New Year!
Straight to my heart,Michael. Great rendition of a very cool song. Thank you for the video!
Best. Timeless.
Thank you! This great and I’ve watched all of these on your artist works site.
Great! Thanks for being a part of it
❤ What a lovely Christmas present for these old ears. Thank you Michael!
Great pinky action!!
Great picking' & singing'. Great song. Thanks for the listen. My Friday is feeling a little more lonesome now.
A great unique cover of this song!
whew...that's beautiful buddy.
I’m feeling it. Voice, feeling, strumming, all right on!
This is such a catchy, poignant, and fun tune. What a great sound. Thanks Michael.
Always been one of my favorites!
I love it! I wished I could learn to pick like that. I'm always running into dead ends with nowhere to go. Vocals and guitar are amazing as always!
That is a great sounding big Kay.
Love your music! Thank you!
I just love this one. Raining, raining, raining….
That’s some fantastic strumming and picking, it just drives on and carries the feeling forward.
Too much fun! The yodeling with that kinda syncopated awkward sound is just irresistible. Sounds like “The Soggy Botton Boys”….the real ones! Super cool sound.
Just marvellous
Fair-weather bum? That's me. Still worthless after all these years.
Holy smokes, Micheal! Dude is genuinely in my top three favorite bluegrass musicians of all-time!
Thank you. Wonderful. My favorite of Dad's Original songs. His father, Rufus Blake, rode the rails from Georgia to California and back in the early '30's during the Depression looking for work. This song is a reflection of hearing his Dad's experiences and talking to the hobo's that hung out near their home on the AGS line in Sulphur Springs, Georgia.
@@leeblake3989 thanks! It’s great to hear the background on these songs. It sounds like your dad often writes from lived experiences
@@michaeldaves635 Many, if not most, of Dad's originals are based on either his experiences (Church Street Blues) or experiences of people he has known (Ginseng Sullivan & Last Train From Poor Valley). Some are total fiction (Billy Gray) and some are historical "faction" or fact and fiction (Ol' Bill Miner). Dad has thousands that have never been published and exist only in his hand written notes.
Great song by Norman. That guitar sounds great! Awesome singing and playing!
Is it possible for a man to play too fast? You “loved and left” so fast, it made my head spin!
Number For My Name, and Muleskinner Blues both sound so fantastic, it’s hard to choose a favorite,…but for the super mellow yodeling, which makes Muleskinner such a stand-out. Fantastic, as usual, from the Amazing musical and vocal stylings of Mr. Dave’s.
Woooohooo!!yeee haw!! That was a fun time!
Wonderful playing from New England. Since the 90 mph fast mail train has come through on the AGS, how about a "Slow Train Through Georgia"?
Funny you should say that - it's already on the set list!
You are on fire! 🔥
I always enjoy hearing your playing and singing! Always a great song choice!
