Lonesome Fridays 2024 #3: The Pain of Loving You
There are few things that most of us can agree upon these days, but one of them has got to be the awesomeness of Dolly Parton. So for this week's Lonesome Fridays I bring you a Dolly classic, The Pain of Loving You. I don't think this was ever intended as a patriotic song but this week I'm sending it out to those are grieving the country we love, for aligning with a message of doing harm to to those on the margins. Like Dolly shows us, love has gotta be tough, so let this be a time for the tough to get going. Whoever you are and whatever you believe, please respond by sowing inclusion in your communities and beyond them, and working to protect those who will now be more vulnerable. I love...

Lonesome Fridays 2024 #2: Look What Thoughts Will Do
Просмотров 30019 часов назад
For this week's Lonesome Fridays I'm going back to a Lefty Frizzell classic that I have played in many a solo set. It's got sort of a wailing guitar part that wonders what Bill Monroe might have sounded like on a lap steel. Anyhow, Lefty is the best and I once got to play his famous Gibson J-200 guitar, with his name emblazoned on the pickguard and a custom Bigsby neck. It's the guitar that hel...
Lonesome Fridays 2024 #1: Prisoner's Song
Просмотров 31914 дней назад
Welcome back to Lonesome Fridays, where I share a song each week for the last 10 weeks of the year. They'll all go on a playlist where you can string them together to form a more-or-less coherent solo set. I'm kicking things off with The Prisoner's Song, first recorded and released in 1924 (100 years ago!) by Vernon Dalhart. It had the distinction of being the first million-selling country song...
Dark Hollow - Clarence White with Muleskinner Class Announcement
Просмотров 46814 дней назад
I’m very excited to be offering a new Zoom course on the guitar style of my hero, Clarence White. It’ll be a deep dive into his playing on the 1973 Muleskinner recordings - both the live TV performance and the studio album. This was one of the last recordings Clarence made before he died tragically in June 1973. His playing is remarkable as he drew inspiration from his Muleskinner bandmates and...
The Golden Rocket - Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff

Here’s The Golden Rocket, a song that will be on our upcoming Jim & Jesse tribute album (written by Hank Snow). @jhdjolliff and I are getting ready for a concert this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8 in Brooklyn, in the same 19th Century church hall where we tracked the record. It’s a special space and we hope you’ll join us there if you are in the area. 2pm, @OldFirstBrooklyn #bluegrassharmony at...
And Am I Born To Die (Doc Watson style) - Michael Daves & Billy Strings
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
Got together with Billy Strings as part of a monthly series on Doc Watson songs I’ve been doing for my school of bluegrass vocals on ArtistWorks. The whole discussion was a half hour long and includes three songs. Here’s an excerpt, an old shape note hymn that Doc recorded, And Am I Born to Die (aka Idumea). Billy’s been singing it solo a capella from time to time but I learned a chilling duet ...
Mississippi Moon (Peter Rowan)

Happy 4th of July, and also happy 82nd birthday to the great Peter Rowan! Here’s his song Mississippi Moon, which he recorded with Seatrain in 1971 with Richard Greene on fiddle. It’s a real sleeper, and should become a standard. Glad to hear Peter singing it some as of late! I’m psyched for two ostensibly solo shows next week, where I’ll likely pull this one out. On Wednesday, July 10 I’ve got...
Michael Daves & Alex Hargreaves play Paddy on the Tunrpike

Got together with my buddy Alex Hargreaves to shoot a welcome video for our ArtistWorks schools. I’ve been doing a monthly series on Doc Watson songs for my vocal students, but after a while we started with some tunes that Doc picked. This one is Paddy on the Turnpike, which appears on the Bill Monroe & Doc Watson live recordings (and was recorded on the White House lawn in 1980, following an i...

The Gold Rush - from Tony Rice’s Church Street Blues 1983

I’m getting myself in the zone to teach a five week Zoom class on Tony Rice’s seminal 1983 (mostly) solo album, Church Street Blues. We’ll be diving deep into the first eight tracks on the record as well as placing it in the context of Tony’s music and bluegrass guitar traditions in general. Two classes will feature special guests, notable guitarists with strong connections to the album and Ton...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #10 - Sunny Side of the Mountain
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.10 месяцев назад
I'm bringing Lonesome Fridays 2023 to a close with Sunny Side of the Mountain, a classic most associated with the (self-proclaimed) King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin, who named his band The Sunny Mountain Boys after it. The original recording was from 1946 by Hank, the Singing Ranger, later known as Hank Snow, and it was also a staple of Bill Monroe's repertoire. I've only ever performed this son...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #9 - Hickory Wind
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Here's' Hickory Wind, a cosmic country classic credited to Gram Parsons, though some attribute its authorship to South Carolina folksinger Sylvia Sammons. Regardless of who wrote it, it's a killer song that is forever associated with Parsons' mythology due to his unauthorized performance of it on the Grand Ole Opry (instead of the Merle Haggard song that had been approved by the powers that be)...
Lonesome Fridays 2023 #8 - Ginseng Sullivan

I love this Norman Blake classic because it's a great song and is set in my beloved North Georgia hills of home. But also because it's sort of a blank slate in terms of guitar breaks. Norman, perhaps the greatest solo flatpicker of all time, for some reason doesn't take a guitar break on his original recording. So we just have to imagine what he would have played. I'm not exactly working in Nor...

I'm feeling fired up after my first solo show in quite some time which was last night at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. It was the 17th anniversary of my residency there, which until the pandemic was a weekly solo set. In the last few years I've been featuring collaborations which I love, but missing solo sets was the whole impetus for Lonesome Fridays. Now that Rockwood has closed down its la...

Fulfilling the set's George Jones quota here with a great country classic about a creepy voyeur who gets his heart broke. I'm playing a great old Gibson J50 that my dad got in trade from my musical godfather Whit Connah (for a Marc Savoy cajun accordion). Every time I play it I think of Whit, who could sing a George Jones song as powerfully as anybody this side of The Possum hisself. I’ll surel...

Love Dolly and the message in this story and your comment. Staying tough💙
Michael, I enjoyed your performance here. AND I also loved the note in your description. (And of course I always love when you play the J-50)
Love Dolly & this song. Donna & I hope it makes the setlist in Brooklyn next weekend.
Love your singing, playing and song selection! Thanks for making my day!
Cool!
Fantastic vocals and guitar!
I love Lefty and Merle! Man this was awesome! Beautiful dounding guitar snd solo.
I had no idea that was a Dolly song. That was fantastic!
Hey Michael, Interesting the mellowish kinda bluesy 70's sound you gave to this one. It was more contemporary sounding to me, complex and beautifully crafted. I was wondering if you might sometime play that electric mandolin you've got there behind you? Your guitar sounded great, as ever. Maybe that was a viola, on the wall, but it looked something like a Breedlove mandolin. I'm learning the mandolin, myself, and I'm pretty obsessed with the sound of it. There aren't as many mandolin artists as guitarists, that I've found recorded with Adirondack-tradition, mountain-style music and folk ballads, and the like; so I've been listening to Mississipi John Hurt for that picking that's like a train wheel going round; and Elmore James, for his wonderful slide guitar,... to hear the sounds I like. Your voice often sounds to me like a mandolin made into a man; especially when you do the Adirondack-high mountain style of singing with the breaks in your voice and yodelish sounds. That's my favorite of your vocal stylings. I hope you'll treat us with some mando, if you get the yen....
Yeee haw. This one makes the floor bounce, and invites one to get to some dancin', against one's will! Expertly and authentically played and sung!... I'm glad you had the daisy shirt to keep things light. That was some serious mountain, dancing grief! It sounded like the protagonist must've been moving on alright, though, because everyone around him would've had to be dancing and swinging their gals around the room, if he could play like you play and sing!
Oooooh eeee. I want to dance a jig around a campfire and kick up my heels to this. You caught the bouncy fun of it, as well as the fascinating, technically surprising changes. Masterful, as usual. Thank you for taking the time, Michael. I hope you record absolutely everything you enjoy and learn to play. There's no one else who brings your decisiveness and responsiveness to these festivals of musicality! It's great to see you enjoy it, too. The house is coming down over that performance. Super fast, but still so melodically coherent and nuanced!
Thank you so much for carefully curating these arrangements for your Lonesome Fridays' sets. You play everything with such an astonishingly confident attack, I always feel that you've written it yourself and feel every bit of the meaning of it, with no apologies. Somehow, even with that signature strength in your approach, the plaintive sweetness always comes through. What a treat.
Love the low notes in the vocals and the bouncing beat. Cool lyrics, and groovin' Cajun/folk/back-country hybrid sound. Love it. I wish you could hear us all clap!
That was fun to hear you play that guitar (not the vintage plywood one with the nice scratchy ring", with this lonesome sounding song. Nice ironies in the lyrics. I just love to hear your voice. There's no one else that can touch you with this distinctly American sound.
Ferocious! Your voice and intonation is a dynamic living piece of American history. Michael, you are a treasure! I'm learning mandolin and love to watch your performances for inspiration, because your voice seems like what my mandolins would sound like, if they came to life and could sing to me, without the limitation of my capacity to use their strings....
Lefty is spinning in his grave. With joy.
awesome dude....
Allow my blasphemous statement please. This is better than Lefty left it.
Really, really good.
Thanks Michael great song and awesome cover!
Thank you this is awesome.
Awesome Michael!!!!!! Perfect.
Thanks Michael this is really good and enjoyable!!
Good lord this jam was cooking
Michael, it is super cool! Love the sound of this old guitar. Cheers!
Is the guitar tuned down a whole step? I was trying to play along and surprised to find it in true G despite the capo…
Yes! This guitar lives down a whole step
Superb!! Love your Lonesome Fridays-posts!
🙏
Awesome!
He sure knows how to get the best out of that crappy old guitar.
In 2008 I attended Nashcamp and had the pleasure of speaking with Roland White on several occasions. I wish I had recorded some of those conversations. Here's my video of Roland White singing Why You Been Gone So Long https:ruclips.net/video/w9xV93x2fw8/видео.html
I can't figure out how to DM you for this, Michael. Could you help?
This guy always has a different twist on songs. Works well with this tuning. Good job.
Shot in the dark, but is this guitar still available? Been looking for one
no, it's long gone, and went to someone whose family was involved with making these instruments, which is super cool. They're great guitars and I hope you find one!

I want to hear you do this in an old chapel with wonderful acoustics, Michael. Are you a church -goin' man?... or do you know a friendly pastor who'd open the doors of a local church to some down home tunes?
Love it. Thank you for authentically preserving and celebrating this American sound! Your artistry and skill are deeply enjoyed. I'm a beginner mandolin player, and this sound truly inspires. Your voice is like what I love about the sound of a mandolin.
Great playing and singing. Need to dive a little deeper into your artistworks lessons!

It’s all awesome but the break at 1:57. Thats fire. Great harmony guys.

Special stuff. Thanks for sharing!
To much trying to show off but it’s a good song. I guess I prefer the original Hank Snow 👍
Yeah, these guys are total egomaniacs. The notion two people who have spent years honing their craft would display it in such an egregious way does a serious disservice to music.
When ppl are good musicians it isn't showing off. It's doing what comes easily. Hank wasn't that capable as a musician really.
