Wyatt's mind runs at hyper-speed. He's a whirlwind of energy and creativity with more interests than most anyone I know. And he's deep into the knowledge of each. Couple that with his hand skills and astonishing resourcefulness at finding the rare and usual trims, parts and more (of old instruments), his renovations of old-players is legendary.

At first you see the artist... not just any painter, but one inspired by Jackson Pollack. Big, innovative, expansive works. His instruments carry all the passion of his artistry but in a different package. The energy is there waiting for you to tap in. A trip to his shop is unforgettable. He has an extraordinarily loyal following.

A professional designer of consumer products by trade, Ken fell in love with the banjo playing of Dave Guard of the Kingston Trio. His successful career beckoned, but he could not let go of his musical roots. So he built himself a castle in the mountains and equipped the basement for his next creative adventure... banjo building. And like his corporate career, he's found success.

Had to drive way up into Canada to meet this guy. He's a fiddle prodigy... both building and playing. He's actually bringing his love for both instruments into his creations... started making banjos with scrolls on their pegheads. Think that's funny? Apparently the collectors and players flocking to buy them don't. His banjos sound great and they're gorgeous to boot. It was worth the long trip ...

Mac builds maple banjos from wood featuring the most birds-eyes-per-inch you've ever seen. And they play as good as they look. In fact, get him to play them for you. He's a multi-year winner of the banjo competition at Clifftop. Not too bad a fiddler, neither. In fact, it's a family thing. This guy really understands what the Southern Appalachian music culture is all about. Mac is a national tr...

Meeting Glenn at his shop means the center of a forrest stream. He's most comfortable in nature. So when he travels for his day job, he takes his tools with him and finds a comfy spot with a view. In addition to building incredibly well-crafted instruments, his artistry shows in his attention to detail... and inlay. On top of all that, he writes tunes and plays at a level us mere mortals could ...

The purveyor of the internal resonator banjo. David has earned critical acclaim in his instruments. As a technology/sound geek (his shop is deep in electric audio equipment both new and old), he understands the mechanics. And he has the skills to make his ideas manifest in wood (and more). Like almost all the banjo builders, he's unusually gifted... and incredibly interesting. His banjos are as...

A city planner/engineer by trade, this guy loves to solve problems. But not just for town planners, he also likes work-around and home fixes... so any Tom, Dick or Henrietta can build or repair their ax. His whole online Banjo Hangout personna is based on that. And boy-howdy does he have a loyal following! Once you see just how organized he is, play a few of his banjos and experience first-hand...

Formerly in banking, Jeff took a shine to the banjo and learned from mentor/teacher Dwight Diller... which means he understands the significance of the banjo. There's a reverence in each instrument he builds... Dwight's partially responsible for that. But in spending time with Jeff, you understand his is fully-present, whether he's just having a conversation or cutting a piece of wood. I see it...

Because he was my mentor in teaching me the banjo, I'm including Dwight's entire interview, here. He was a complicated, sometimes challenging human being. But when it came to teaching the banjo, he had a singular mission... for you to learn to play... ideally, better than him. He loved you for putting yourself out there to accomplish that task. Once you got to really know him, you found out he ...

Mike built banjos in my dads shop in his later years. I really enjoyed hanging out with him and seeing what he was up to when i would visit. Rest in peace, Mike!
Bill is a great person
I love my Bart Reiter banjo. Over 30 years old
Really nice interview. Great music, too. But are my eyes deceiving me or is the 5th string nut up at the 6th fret? Are there many banjos like that? This is the first one I think I've ever seen.
Whoa! Keen eye! Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right. Dwight had a few Jeff Kramer (former student of his) banjos made for him and his sweetie. Pretty sure that WAS a modification he'd requested but don't know why. I never talked to him about it (at the time of this interview) because I was more interested in his story.
@@autismhangout Thanks. I've just gone down the rabbit hole looking up Jeff Kramer's banjos, and I see that the 6th-fret thing is listed as a "Dwight Diller preference". I agree with you that Dwight's story was more interesting than his banjo, but it's a cool banjo, too.
Dwight told me the reason he wanted the 5th string key on the 6th fret was because when you slide on the 4th string the 5th key won’t get in your way if it’s on the 6th fret. That’s what he told me.
@@dorindacontreras1094 Thanks. Mystery solved.
I wish someone would carry on his tradition.
Bill Rickard is an incredible individual.
Yes! Yes he is!
Sadly, Bob has passed away. I always wanted to meet him.
Just bought a Rickard Spunover and a Rickard Dobson, and a set of Rickard 10:1 tuners, said to be the best banjo tuners made, for my Béla Fleck facsimile banjo.
Rip Mr LeVan
tears come to my eyes seeing this. Can’t believe he’s gone my teacher and friend RIP DW
No one seems to know where Wyatt is in 2024. When was this filmed?
It's from Graig Evans Conversations with North American Banjo Builders, Vol. 4 DVD which came out in 2015.

I really like the way my Apple phone sounds after you worked on it
I had the privilege of caring for Doc’s wife while she was a patient on our medical services. I went to his house and saw his amazing banjos and craftsmanship and will never forget his affable nature and easy going personality
Thanks for leaving this experience with Doc.
@@autismhangout is he still alive and well and making banjos?
