You don't tighten head studs from one side to another unless you want to have massive gaps. Majority of head stud torque patterns require you to go from outside to inside otherwise one side sinks faster and forces the opposite side to lift slightly.

I think the main bolts on an 855 cummins were 350-375 somewhere in there and we used a 3/4 inch torque wrench for that, actually didnt even take all that much effort.
